How to choose a wedding banquet venue in Kota Kinabalu
Start with three numbers, in this order.
1. Your guest count, divided by 10. KK hotels price and seat banquets by the round table of 10. For 300 guests you need 30 tables, and 30 tables is also the minimum for most of Sutera Harbour's packages. If you are under 200 guests, the big resorts' minimums will push you into a room that feels half empty.
2. The minimum table guarantee. This is the hidden budget floor. Sutera Harbour asks for 30 tables in The Pacific Sutera Grand Ballroom and 40 in The Magellan Sutera Grand Ballroom. Shangri-La Tanjung Aru's packages need a minimum of 100 guests. The Palace Hotel's last published package needed 20 tables.
3. Nett versus "++". Shangri-La prints both: RM2,024.47++ becomes RM2,188.88 nett once the 10% service charge and 8% SST are added. Always compare nett to nett. Every figure in this guide is nett unless it says otherwise.
Then decide on the style. A Chinese-style dinner needs a stage and a clean sightline for the march-in, which is why pillarless ballrooms matter. A Malay akad nikah needs a pelamin and a room that works in the daytime. A garden or beach reception needs a wet-weather backup inside.
Worked budgets for 30 tables (300 guests)

- Shangri-La Mutiara (Muhibbah dome set): RM2,188.88 a table, RM65,666.40 for 30 tables, valid to 31 Dec 2026
- Sutera Harbour Pearl Blossom (8-course Chinese): RM2,199 a table, RM65,970 for 30 tables, valid to 31 Mar 2027
- Shangri-La Diamond (8-course): RM2,388.88 a table, RM71,666.40 for 30 tables, valid to 31 Dec 2026
- Sutera Harbour Jade Prosperity (9-course Chinese): RM2,699 a table, RM80,970 for 30 tables, valid to 31 Mar 2027
- Shangri-La Jade (9-course): RM2,888.88 a table, RM86,666.40 for 30 tables, valid to 31 Dec 2026
Two things change these totals. Sutera Harbour's Orchid, Jasmine and Raja Sehari packages are not available on public holidays or the day before or after one. And both resorts add free extras as your table count rises, such as a free table of 10, beer barrels, a photobooth or an extra bridal suite night, so a 50-table booking gets more per ringgit than a 30-table one.
For a smaller wedding, compare The Palace Hotel's last published weekend rate of RM1,380 nett a table (20 tables, about RM27,600) or Sabah Oriental Hotel's Sapphire Chinese menu at RM999 nett a table (30 tables, about RM29,970). Both of those price cards are older than 2026, so confirm the current rate before you budget on them.
International Resorts & Chain Hotels
1. Shangri-La Tanjung Aru Kota Kinabalu
The beachfront resort at 20 Jalan Aru is the only venue here where you can do a sunset garden ceremony and a ballroom dinner on the same property. Its Grand Ballroom is 668 sq m with a 7-metre ceiling and seats 640 banquet-style or 1,200 for a standing reception. It splits into three ballrooms of about 210 banquet seats each, which suits a 200-guest wedding. The Pavilion (140 banquet) and Hibiscus Room (130) handle smaller dinners and tea ceremonies.
Its 2026 wedding packages PDF, valid to 31 December 2026, lists four packages. Mutiara is RM2,188.88 nett a table with a Muhibbah dome set menu. Diamond is RM2,388.88 nett for eight courses and a one-night bridal suite. Jade is RM2,888.88 nett for nine courses and two nights. The Garden Wedding is an international buffet at RM278.88 nett a person. Each package adds "wishes" from 200 guests upwards, such as a free table, a beer barrel, an LED screen or a corkage rebate of RM300 to RM500.
2. Sutera Harbour Resort (The Pacific Sutera Hotel & The Magellan Sutera Resort)
Sutera Harbour has the biggest banquet hall in the city and the widest price ladder. The Magellan Sutera Grand Ballroom (57 x 33 m) seats 1,300 banquet-style with a stage or 1,400 without, and 1,800 standing. It divides into Ballroom 1 (350) and Ballroom 2 (800). The Pacific Sutera Grand Ballroom seats 450 with a stage or 640 without. Smaller rooms include the Rose Garden at The Magellan Sutera (200 banquet) and the Hibiscus Garden at The Pacific Sutera (200).
Its Charming Weddings team publishes five priced packages. Orchid is RM1,599 nett a table (dome set) and Jasmine is RM1,999 nett, both needing 30 tables and valid to 30 December 2026. Raja Sehari Akad Nikah is RM1,888 nett a table with a pelamin and nikah table set-up, a 22-table minimum in The Pacific Ballroom or 12 tables in the Hibiscus Garden or Rose Garden, valid to 31 March 2027. Pearl Blossom is RM2,199 nett (eight-course Chinese menu) and Jade Prosperity is RM2,699 nett (nine courses), both valid to 31 March 2027 with a 30-table minimum in the Pacific Grand Ballroom or 40 in the Magellan. 3. Hyatt Regency Kinabalu
This is the downtown waterfront option, with the Kimanis Ballroom on its own street-level entrance so guests do not walk through the lobby. The ballroom is 530 sq m and seats 380 for a sit-down dinner or 400 for a cocktail reception. It splits into Kimanis Ballroom I (340 sq m) and II (190 sq m), which suits a 150- to 250-guest wedding.
Hyatt does not publish 2026 per-table prices. It does publish its booking terms: a RM3,500 deposit confirms the venue, then a second deposit of 70% of the estimated banquet cost is due one month before the wedding. Both deposits are non-refundable and non-transferable, and the balance is settled after the event.
4. Kota Kinabalu Marriott Hotel
Marriott's Grand Ballroom is 818 sq m and pillarless, with a foyer and terrace looking out to the islands. Its official events page lists 650 banquet-style and 1,100 standing, so plan on 65 tables, not 110. The ballroom divides into Ballroom 3 (280 banquet), Ballroom 1 (160) and Ballroom 2 (120). Weddings are handled by Marriott Certified Wedding Planners, but prices are by quote only.
5. Le Méridien Kota Kinabalu
Le Méridien sits on the downtown waterfront. Its official events page now lists the Grand Ballroom at 461 sq m, seating 400 banquet-style or 400 standing, with a sea-view foyer for pre-dinner drinks. That makes it a 40-table room, closer in size to Hyatt than to Marriott. It markets two wedding packages. Classic includes a one-night bridal suite, an eight-course set menu, flowers and discounted guest rooms. Chic adds a second bridal suite night, free guest parking, a wedding cake and two fresh flower pedestals. It does not publish per-table prices.
Homegrown & City-Centre Venues
6. The Klagan Regency @ 1Borneo
The Klagan Regency is attached to 1Borneo Hypermall on Jalan UMS, about a 20-minute drive from the city centre. Its pillarless Grand Ballroom is 1,492 sq m and seats 1,000 banquet-style or 1,800 standing. It splits into Klagan 1 (600 banquet), Klagan 2 (250) and Klagan 3 (120), so one hall can take anything from a 12-table dinner to a 100-table one. Being inside a mall means easy parking and food options for out-of-town guests. The hotel quotes weddings on request via +6088 529 888. Guests who remember it as Novotel Kota Kinabalu 1Borneo will find the same building under a new name.
7. Sabah Oriental Hotel (Crystal Ballroom)
This 4-star hotel on Lorong Kemajuan, owned by Crystal Crown Hotel (Sabah) Sdn Bhd, has a second-floor Crystal Ballroom for up to 650 guests, with an attached gallery, a VIP room, an LCD projector and a motorised screen. It is the one venue here with a menu page just for Chinese wedding dinners. Its posted 2024 menus run Crystal RM889, Sapphire RM999, Emerald RM1,299 and Ruby RM1,800 nett a table of 10. These are the lowest Chinese banquet prices on this list, but check that they still apply in 2026 (+6088 258 998).
8. The Palace Hotel Kota Kinabalu
The Palace Ballroom takes up to 330 guests across 33 tables, and the adjoining Harmony Room adds six more. It suits couples who do not want a 1,000-seat hall. The hotel's wedding page lists a weekday package from RM888 nett a table (buffet or dome set), a weekend package from RM1,380 nett a table with a 20-table minimum, and an unpriced garden wedding package. Inclusions are food tasting for 10, a projector and PA system, a floral aisle with arch, a backdrop, four hours of venue use, a five-tier mock cake, a bridal room night with breakfast, VIP lobby parking and a corkage discount. The same page says those packages were valid to December 2025, so treat them as a guide and ask the sales team for 2026 prices.
How to pick between them
- Beach or garden ceremony plus ballroom dinner: Shangri-La Tanjung Aru or Sutera Harbour.
- Lowest published 2026 price for 300 guests: Sutera Harbour Orchid, about RM47,970 for 30 tables, if your date is not near a public holiday.
- Malay akad nikah and reception in one package: Sutera Harbour Raja Sehari, or Shangri-La's Mutiara dome set.
- 500 to 1,000 guests: Sutera Harbour's Magellan ballroom, The Klagan Regency or Marriott (up to 650 seated).
- 150 to 400 guests downtown: Hyatt Regency's Kimanis Ballroom or Le Méridien.
- Under 350 guests on a tighter budget: The Palace Hotel or Sabah Oriental Hotel, after confirming 2026 rates.
