> Quick view: Queensbay Mall in Bayan Lepas is running "Our Malaysia, Our Pride" to 20 September 2026. Free heritage exhibition on 2F South Zone from 28 August to 16 September. Six free Dewan Budaya USM performances on 30 and 31 August at 2pm, 4pm and 6pm. Q-Kids batik, gasing and kah kiak workshops for a RM50 single receipt per child, pre-register at the Information Counter. Redemptions at RM100 (POPULAR, Lucky Cup or HWC Coffee RM5 voucher), RM288 (Auntea Jenny drink) and RM388 (batik handkerchief, max two same-day receipts) — each opening on a different date.

One campaign name, four things, four date windows

Most mall Merdeka campaigns are a banner and one spend-and-redeem line. Queensbay Mall's is not, and the reason it is worth reading carefully is that almost nothing in it opens on the same day as anything else. The mall's own event listing dates the campaign 24 August to 20 September 2026; the write-up on the same page says the month of Malaysian fun begins 22 August, which lines up with the first redemption printed on the campaign artwork. Either way, the closing date to plan around is 20 September.

Underneath that umbrella sit four separate things:

  • Celebrating Malaysia — a free heritage exhibition on 2F, South Zone, 28 August to 16 September 2026. The mall describes it as discovering Malaysia's vibrant heritage and celebrating its diversity. No spend, no registration, no ticket.
  • Interactive Performance by Dewan Budaya, Universiti Sains Malaysia — six shows across two days: 30 August at 2pm, 4pm and 6pm, and 31 August at 2pm, 4pm and 6pm. Free.
  • Q-Kids Workshop, run with the Penang History Gallery — three crafts across eight sessions, gated behind a RM50 single receipt per child and pre-registration at the QBM Information Counter.
  • Redemption — a four-rung spend ladder, each rung with its own opening date.

The spend ladder, rung by rung

Read the dates in this list before the ringgit figures. Three of these five redemptions do not exist yet over the Merdeka long weekend:

  • RM100POPULAR RM5 voucher. 22 August onwards. The lowest and earliest rung on the ladder.
  • RM288one Auntea Jenny Ice Milk Series drink, regular size. 29 August onwards.
  • RM100Lucky Cup RM5 voucher. 5 September onwards.
  • RM100HWC Coffee RM5 voucher. 12 September onwards.
  • RM388Queensbay Mall batik handkerchief, minimum spend across a maximum of two combined, same-day receipts. 16 September onwards — Malaysia Day itself, and only four days before the campaign closes on 20 September.

Notice what the ladder actually does. The three RM5 vouchers are identical in value and identical in threshold; the only thing separating them is which month you happen to walk in. A RM100 receipt on 5 September earns you a Lucky Cup voucher; the same RM100 receipt on 12 September gives you a choice between Lucky Cup and HWC Coffee. And the RM288 rung is the odd one out — nearly triple the threshold of the RM100 rungs for a single regular-size drink, which on any normal week is a single-digit ringgit item.

Why RM50 is the best rung on the ladder

The cheapest threshold in the whole campaign is the one that is not on the redemption poster at all. RM50 in a single receipt registers one child for a Q-Kids Workshop, run with the Penang History Gallery:

  • Batik Making Workshop29 August, 2.30pm and 4.30pm; 12 September, 2.30pm and 4.30pm.
  • Gasing Making Workshop30 August, 2.30pm and 4.30pm; 13 September, 2.30pm.
  • Kah Kiak Making Workshop13 September, 4.30pm.

That is four batik sessions, three gasing sessions and a single kah kiak session — eight in all — and kah kiak — the wooden clogs that were everyday footwear in George Town's shophouse streets — is the rarest of the three. A single session runs at a threshold of RM50, which is a family lunch at the food court, and it buys a child an hour of hands-on heritage craft with a museum partner. Compare that against RM388 for a handkerchief and the ladder is upside down in the shopper's favour.

The two constraints to respect are that registration is in person at the QBM Information Counter, not online, and that the poster says ONE (1) kid in capitals. Two children means clearing the threshold twice, and the mall has not published whether one RM100 receipt covers two registrations. Ask before you shop, not after.

The two afternoons worth planning around

Sunday 30 August is the only date where a workshop and a free performance overlap: gasing making at 2.30pm and 4.30pm, Dewan Budaya USM on stage at 2pm, 4pm and 6pm. A 2pm show, a 2.30pm workshop and a 4pm show is a complete afternoon for the price of a RM50 receipt.

Monday 31 August — Merdeka Day, and a public holiday — has the performances but no workshop, and every redemption available that day is equally available on a quiet Tuesday. It is also a public holiday car park rate day. If your only reason for going is the redemption counter, go on a weekday instead.

Worked examples

A family of four, Saturday 29 August. Lunch and a bookshop run comes to RM120 on one receipt. That single receipt clears the RM50 Q-Kids threshold (one child registered for batik at 2.30pm), clears the RM100 POPULAR rung for a RM5 voucher, and — being over RM100 on a single receipt — also qualifies as an entry into the 20th Anniversary CapitaPlus Top Spender draw if you are a member. Whether the mall lets one receipt do all three jobs at once is the single most useful question to put to the Information Counter, because the answer is not published anywhere.

A shopper chasing the batik handkerchief. RM388 is the threshold, across at most two combined same-day receipts — so realistically two receipts averaging RM194 each, on the same day, from 16 September onwards. There are four days of campaign left at that point. If the handkerchief is what you want, that is a same-day, mid-September shopping trip, not something you can accumulate towards.

A shopper with RM288 to spend on 29 August. You clear both the RM100 and the RM288 rungs on paper. The RM288 rung returns one regular Ice Milk Series drink from Auntea Jenny; the RM100 rung returns a RM5 POPULAR voucher. Neither the artwork nor the event page states whether one receipt can be redeemed against more than one gift, so plan for one and treat a second as a bonus.

The RM22,000 contest running underneath all of this

Separate from the Merdeka campaign, Queensbay Mall is in its 20th anniversary year, and its CapitaPlus Top Spender contest is running in parallel. The campaign artwork states: spend RM100 or more in a single receipt to participate, open to CapitaPlus members only, RM22,000 in total prizes to be won, dated 1 June to 30 November 2026. The mall's own event listing carries the same contest with the line "till 30 November 2026". Membership is free at member.capitaplus.com.my.

The practical point is that the RM100 single-receipt figure is the same number as three of the redemption rungs. If you are already spending RM100 on one bill for a RM5 voucher, joining CapitaPlus first costs nothing and puts the same receipt to work twice.

What else is live in the same building this fortnight

All of these are from Queensbay Mall's own tenant highlights, with the mall's published listing dates:

  • Banana Bro (3F-03A) — "Rasa Malaysia", 18 August to 30 September 2026, nasi lemak with Bbro fried chicken paired with Spritzer Sparkling, from RM17.90.
  • MUJI (GF-73(A), 73A & 75) — promotion running 20 August to 1 September 2026.
  • Sacoor Brothers (store at GF-115/113) — "Heritage" suit trade-in: bring in any suit, any brand, any condition, for an instant rebate of up to RM200 on a new suit; the traded garment is recycled through Kloth Circularity. Listed 11 to 31 August 2026.
  • BONIA (GF-110 & GF-111) — "Little Trades, Big Change" pre-loved bag trade-in for a reward, listed 17 July to 20 September 2026.
  • Lacoste (GF-52) — Merdeka Day feature, 27 to 31 August 2026.
  • MEGAN (1F-112) — Merdeka heritage feature on its 916 gold pieces, 13 to 31 August 2026.
  • Sushi King (LG-93) — Yakiniku menu with wagyu, listed 1 to 31 August 2026.
  • Queensbay Mall x Alipay+ — up to MYR 528 off, listed as running the full year to 31 December 2026, at the Information Counter.

The Sacoor Brothers and BONIA trade-ins are the two worth a second look, because both convert something you already own into a discount rather than asking for a spend threshold first.

Getting there, parking, and the early-opening trick

Queensbay Mall is at 100 Persiaran Bayan Indah, 11900 Bayan Lepas, on the island's south-east coast near the airport, with mall hours of 10.30am to 10.30pm and an information counter on 04-619 8989.

The car park is ticketless — you tap a Visa, Mastercard, MyDebit or Touch 'n Go card at entry and exit, with a minimum Touch 'n Go card balance of RM20 to enter and a 20-minute drive-through grace period. The mall's published rates:

  • Basement — Monday to Friday: RM1 first hour, RM1 each subsequent hour. Saturday, Sunday and public holidays: RM2 first hour, RM1 each subsequent hour.
  • Multi-level — Monday to Friday: RM1 for the first 2 hours, RM1 each subsequent hour. Saturday, Sunday and public holidays: RM2 for the first 2 hours, RM1 each subsequent hour.
  • VIPRM5 first hour, RM2 each subsequent hour, every day.
  • MotorcycleRM1 per entry, daily.

The multi-level deck is the better value on a weekday: the same RM1 that buys one basement hour buys two upstairs. Car park office is 04-619 8877 (9am to 12am), security 04-619 8981 (12am to 9am).

One genuinely useful local trick for the 30 and 31 August crowd: the mall opens at 10.30am, but several tenants open earlier under the mall's Early Risers listing — Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf from 7.30am, Gravy Baby from 8am, Starbucks (Ground Floor) from 8am, HWC Coffee from 8.30am, Rich Baker from 9am, Winter Warmers from 9am, and Celebrity Fitness from 7am on weekdays and 8am at weekends. Park early, have breakfast, and be at the Information Counter when it opens rather than queueing behind the 2pm show crowd.

Fine print that trips people up

  • The rungs open on staggered dates, and three of them are September items. Anyone driving out on Merdeka weekend expecting the handkerchief will be told to come back on 16 September.
  • The combining rule is published for exactly one tier. RM388 says max two combined same-day receipts. Everything else says only "min spend" — assume single receipt.
  • RM50 is per child, not per family, and registration is in person at the Information Counter.
  • Workshop seats are finite. Nothing published states a cap, but a pre-registration counter with fixed 2.30pm and 4.30pm slots on a public-holiday weekend is a queue by design.
  • The 20th anniversary contest requires CapitaPlus membership, and requires the RM100 to be on one receipt.
  • The exhibition closes on 16 September, the same day the handkerchief redemption opens — so the two headline reasons to visit never overlap.

Who should skip this

If you were not already going to spend money at Queensbay Mall, the redemption ladder is not a reason to start: RM100 for a RM5 voucher is a 5 per cent return, and RM288 for one regular drink is worse. If you live on the mainland or in George Town and would be driving specifically for the handkerchief, the fuel and the parking will out-cost the item.

Who should go: parents of primary-school children within reach of Bayan Lepas, for the Q-Kids workshops, which are the one genuinely scarce thing on offer; anyone who was going to shop at Queensbay anyway during the window, who should simply sign up for CapitaPlus first and let the receipt work twice; and anyone with a suit or a handbag they no longer wear, who can walk into Sacoor Brothers or BONIA and trade it without meeting any spend threshold at all.

How we verified this

Every date, threshold and ringgit figure above was read on 24 August 2026 from Queensbay Mall's own website — the "Our Malaysia, Our Pride" event page and its full campaign artwork carousel (the key visual, the Dewan Budaya USM performance card, the Q-Kids workshop card, the two redemption cards and the 20th anniversary card), the mall's tenant Highlights entries for each brand listed above, and the mall's own published car park rate and Early Risers artwork. Where the mall's written copy and its own artwork disagree — the event write-up says the campaign starts 22 August while the listing dates it 24 August — both readings are given above rather than one being picked silently. Nothing here is taken from an aggregator, and no figure has been estimated. Every figure was re-read against the same official pages and artwork on 25 August 2026: the campaign is still listed and live, and the Q-Kids timetable was corrected to eight sessions (four batik, three gasing, one kah kiak) and the Banana Bro listing to a 18 August start.

Confirm workshop availability and redemption terms with the Queensbay Mall Information Counter on 04-619 8989 before making a special trip.
