Bowling is one of the few things in the Klang Valley that still works for a birthday, a team outing and a rainy Sunday with kids. It is also priced in a way that makes comparing hard. Some centres charge by the game, one charges by the lane hour, and nearly all of them split the day at 4pm, 5pm or 6pm and the week between Monday-to-Thursday and Friday-to-Sunday. Then there are shoes and socks, which most people forget until the counter.

How bowling is priced here

By the game, per person. This is the norm. A game is ten frames for one player, and a group pays that rate for every player, every game. Lanes usually take up to six people.

The time of day matters more than the centre. At Ampang Superbowl's Berjaya Times Square branch a game is RM11.50 on a weekday before 4pm and RM18 on a Friday night. At Ampang Point the same RM8 weekday afternoon game becomes RM12 at the weekend. If you can bowl before 5pm on a weekday, you pay a third less or better.

Shoes and socks are extra, and sometimes compulsory. Rental shoes cost RM3 or RM4. Socks cost RM3 to RM5, and several centres will not let you wear rental shoes without them. Sunway Megalanes states that both are mandatory. Supreme Cosmic Bowl is the exception: bring your own sneakers or sports shoes and you skip both.

Membership and student rates are real savings. Sunway's member rate is RM7.50 against RM15; students with a Malaysian student ID pay RM6.80 on weekdays before 6pm. Ampang Superbowl's student rates need a student card and do not apply during school holidays.

What a family of four pays for two games each

Using each centre's own rate card, with shoes and socks for all four unless noted:

  • Ampang Superbowl, Ampang Point, weekday after 5pm: 8 games at RM11 is RM88, plus RM12 shoes and RM16 socks: RM116.
  • Sunway Megalanes, any time, with MyKad: 8 games at RM15 is RM120, plus RM12 shoes and RM14 socks: RM146.
  • Supreme Cosmic Bowl Mid Valley, Saturday, own sneakers: 8 games at RM30: RM240, with a drink and popcorn each included.

The same family at Ampang Point on a weekday afternoon pays RM64 for the games, against RM88 there after 5pm and RM120 at Sunway.

How to pick

  • Cheapest bowling, flexible schedule: Ampang Superbowl's Ampang Point, Summit USJ or Bangi Gateway, or Alam Lanes, before 5pm on a weekday.
  • A big group or company event: Sunway Megalanes (48 lanes) or Ampang Superbowl Berjaya Times Square (48 lanes). Sunway runs a company tournament rate of RM10 a game for 30 or more people on weekdays before 5pm.
  • A night out rather than a sport: Supreme Cosmic Bowl's neon lanes, where the price includes a drink and popcorn and there are pool tables and darts.
  • West of KL: Juara Bowling Alley in Kota Damansara, which runs weekday walk-in combos.

Check the centre's page before a public holiday: most charge their top rate on the eve and the day itself, and league nights can close lanes to walk-ins.
