Most Merdeka promotions this month are asking you to spend money you were going to spend anyway. This one is asking you to spend money you were probably not going to spend at all — a full set of four tyres is a four-figure decision for most Malaysian households, and no amount of free merchandise should be what tips it.

So we are going to be blunt about this one. The Jom Merdeka Promotion is real, it is properly documented, and we read the campaign's own Specific Terms and Conditions on Continental's Malaysian website on 24 August 2026 to check every line, then re-read them — along with the In-Store Marketplace terms, which live on a separate site — on 6 September 2026. Nothing had moved: both campaigns are still live, the prize table and the eWallet scale are word for word the same, and the participating-dealer list is still 123 outlets. It is also a towel. What makes it worth writing up is not the towel — it is that the same website is quietly carrying two other things that are worth considerably more on exactly the same purchase, and almost nobody walks into a tyre shop knowing about them.

What the promotion actually is

The organiser is Continental Tyre PJ Malaysia Sdn Bhd (196101000253 / 4296-K), which handles both the Continental and General Tire brands in Malaysia. The campaign period is 1 August 2026 at 12:00am to 16 September 2026 at 11:59pm, while stocks last — which means it survives Merdeka Day and closes the day after Malaysia Day.

The mechanic is short enough to quote in full. A participant who purchases four units of Continental or General Tire branded tyres of 16 inches and above, for a passenger car, 4x4, SUV or MPV, in a single official printed receipt, from a participating retail dealer's physical store in a single transaction, may redeem one piece of exclusive merchandise from the dealer.

The reward table is split by rim size, not by how much you spend:

  • Rim 16 inch and 17 inch: one Continental Quick Dry Towel
  • Rim 18 inch and above: one Continental Foldable Sport Bag

Redemption is immediate, at the point of purchase, and it is subject to the dealer's own stock. Continental's fine print says it plainly: while stocks last, subject to availability.

The four lines that disqualify people

One receipt, one transaction. This is the clause that catches the most people. Malaysians very sensibly replace tyres in pairs — front axle now, rear axle in six months. That pattern earns you nothing here. So does the surprisingly common case of a workshop splitting one job across two receipts because the alignment or the rims were billed separately. Ask for a single printed receipt covering all four tyres before you pay.

16 inches and above. If you drive a Perodua Axia, a base Myvi, a Bezza or a Saga on 14 or 15 inch rims, you are outside this promotion no matter what you buy. That is a meaningful chunk of the Malaysian car park excluded in one line, and it is not stated anywhere near as loudly as the campaign artwork states the gift. There is a way back in for those cars further down, though: Continental's In-Store Marketplace starts at 15 inches.

Passenger vehicles only. The offer covers passenger car, 4x4, SUV and MPV tyres. Purchasers of commercial transport tyres — trucks, buses or vans — are explicitly ineligible, as are sales personnel, dealers, fleets, OEM customers and other commercial entities. If you run a small business and the van needs tyres, this is not your promotion.

Physical store, participating dealer. In store only, and only at dealers taking part. Continental's own dealer search on its Malaysian site is the place to check, and it is worth a phone call first: the merchandise sits with the dealer, so a shop can be a participating dealer and still be out of foldable bags in the second week of September.

Who this is genuinely for

If your tyres are already due — cracked sidewalls, tread near the wear indicators, a set that has been on the car past five years — and your rims are 16 inches or larger, then you were going to make this purchase in the next month or two anyway. Doing it before 16 September costs you nothing extra and adds a piece of merchandise. That is the honest case for the promotion, and it is a perfectly good one.

If your tyres have another year in them, replacing four of them early to obtain a towel is the worst kind of false economy. Tyres do not get more expensive for waiting, and Continental runs campaigns like this repeatedly — there was a 7.7 livestream campaign in July, and this is the Merdeka one.

The part worth more than the gift

Two things on Continental's own Malaysian site are, on any realistic tyre bill, worth more than the merchandise.

The first is the In-Store Marketplace. Continental's page describes the flow in six steps: scan the QR code at any authorised Continental or General Tire dealer, browse the products available, add a minimum of two tyres to the cart, check out and pay through the In-Store Marketplace — choosing SPayLater to enjoy up to 10 per cent off — proceed with installation while the store uploads the installation photos, then wait for a Touch 'n Go eWallet code to be sent to you. It runs at 123 participating dealer outlets, which Continental lists by region: 41 in the Central region, 49 in the North, 11 in the South, 15 in East Malaysia and 7 on the East Coast.

Those numbers are published — not on the main site, but on a separate campaign terms page hosted at continental-marketing.com.my, which is where the detail lives. The In-Store Marketplace campaign runs 15 August 2026 (12:00am) to 30 September 2026 (11:59pm), while stocks last. That is two weeks longer than the Jom Merdeka gift, which closes on 16 September.

And the Touch 'n Go eWallet reward is not a mystery amount. Continental publishes a table, scaled by rim size and by how many tyres you buy:

  • Rim 15 to 16 inch — RM30 for two tyres, RM60 for four
  • Rim 17 to 18 inch — RM60 for two tyres, RM120 for four
  • Rim 19 inch and above — RM100 for two tyres, RM200 for four

Read that table against the towel. On four 19 inch tyres, the marketplace route pays RM200 in eWallet credit. The Jom Merdeka route, on the same four tyres, pays a foldable bag.

The SPayLater discount also has a cap that the headline does not mention: up to 10 per cent off, on a minimum spend of RM200, to a maximum discount of RM100. The cap bites at RM1,000 — above that, ten per cent quietly stops being ten per cent. So a four-tyre quote of RM1,200 returns RM100, not RM120. Continental does not publish recommended retail prices for tyres in Malaysia, so work the rest against your own quote: any RM figure you see for a specific size is a dealer's number, not the brand's.

And here is the part that matters most to the people the gift promotion shuts out. The Jom Merdeka merchandise needs rims of 16 inches and above. The In-Store Marketplace starts at 15 inches, and needs only two tyres rather than four. So the Myvi, Bezza and Saga owners excluded from the towel two sections above are not excluded from the eWallet code — a set of four 15 inch tyres bought through the marketplace pays RM60. Only 14 inch rims and smaller sit outside both.

Three limits sit in the marketplace terms and nowhere in the marketing. Each unique phone number is capped at two submissions for the entire campaign period, and anything beyond that is disqualified automatically without notice. Verification takes up to seven working days, and an approved code arrives within 30 working days of approval — so this is money back later, not money off at the counter. And Continental reserves the right to substitute a different reward if the eWallet codes run out.

How the money actually reaches you, and how to chase it. The code is not emailed the moment you pay. Verification takes up to seven working days, an approved code follows within 30 working days of approval, and there is a public tracker: the campaign page at continental-marketing.com.my/promo/instoremarketplace2026/ carries a Check Submission Status tool that asks for your mobile number and a TAC, then shows the state of your claim. The terms say that same page also shows the inventory level of the reward — but as at 6 September 2026 no stock figure is visible on the public page, everything sits behind the phone-number check, so the usable stock signal is the alternative the terms name: Continental Tyres MY's own social channels. One more line worth knowing before you pick a payment method: the terms state plainly that SPayLater is independently operated by its own service provider, that Continental is not involved in approvals, billing, instalments or technical support, and that any dispute has to go to that provider rather than to Continental.

One thing the terms leave genuinely unclear, so ask before you pay: the marketplace terms require the tyres to be bought at the dealer retail price without any offer, discount, promotion or rebate. Whether claiming the Jom Merdeka merchandise on the same receipt counts as an offer under that line is not spelled out either way, and we are not going to guess for you. If you want both, put the question to the dealer before the receipt is printed, not after.

The second is the Total Confidence Plan, and it is the one thing on this page that is free, standing all year, and routinely thrown away by the people entitled to it. Continental describes it as a comprehensive package of all available warranties and services, under which eligible tyres carry a Road Hazard Warranty for 12 months from the date of purchase, registered and claimed through the free Conti TCP app on iOS, Google Play and Huawei AppGallery. We read its full terms and its eligibility page on 6 September 2026, and the detail deserves more attention than the towel does.

It is wider than either promotion. TCP covers Continental, General Tire and Viking branded tyres for passenger cars, SUVs, 4x4s and MPVs, from 14 inches and above, with a minimum of two tyres on a single receipt, bought from a TCP participating dealer. So the 14-inch Axia owner who is shut out of the Jom Merdeka merchandise *and* out of the In-Store Marketplace eWallet code is still inside this one. Original Equipment fitment tyres, commercial use and spare tyres are excluded.

You have seven days — and realistically only until the tyre goes onto the rim. The terms are blunt: tyres must be registered within seven (7) days from the date of purchase, and registration after that period will not be accepted. It happens only in the Conti TCP app, and it needs the computer-generated invoice, your contact details, and the tyre's D.O.T. number, size, pattern and the barcode on the tyre bead. Continental's own footnote explains why that is a same-day job in practice: once the tyre is mounted, the rim covers the bead barcode. Register at the outlet before fitting, or at the very least photograph the bead barcode of every tyre before it goes on the car.

What it actually pays. Unrepairable road hazard damage — impact or cut damage to tread, shoulder or sidewall, penetration by a sharp thin object, deep cuts — is exchanged for a new tyre of the same size and pattern, or a comparable Continental tyre if that pattern is out of stock. Cover runs for 12 months from purchase, or until the tyre is down to 5mm of remaining tread, whichever comes first, and there is no mileage limit. You still pay fitment, balancing and alignment, you pay the difference if you accept an upgrade, and the replacement tyre is not itself covered — the plan applies to the first set only.

What it does not pay. Repairable punctures are out, and Continental draws that line precisely: a tyre counts as unrepairable only if the puncture is 6mm or more across, or sits in the sidewall or shoulder rather than the centre of the tread. Superficial abrasion, rim damage, overloading, racing, flood and collision are all excluded, claims are assessed by Continental's technical customer service team whose decision the terms make final, and replacement tyres are not handed over on the spot.

Fine print people miss

Continental's Campaign Standard Terms — which the Jom Merdeka Specific Terms sit inside — reserve the right to change any term of any campaign at any time, without notice, effective immediately upon posting. In practice that matters most at the tail end of a campaign: a promotion that is live when you read this can be varied before you get to the shop, and stock-based promotions in particular tend to thin out first at busy outlets.

There is also no published statement that the merchandise can be exchanged for cash, a discount or a different item, and no stated allowance for buying eight tyres to claim two gifts. Assume one redemption per qualifying receipt, and ask the dealer if you need it confirmed.

Finally, the eligibility line is worth repeating because it is unusual: you must be a resident of Malaysia, residing in Malaysia, and aged 18 or above during the campaign period.
