Merdeka sales are not one event. The season conventionally runs from 15 August to 16 September, bridging Hari Merdeka on 31 August and Malaysia Day on 16 September, and retailers stagger their offers across that month rather than dropping everything at once.

That staggering is the reason this page exists in the state it does. It is late July. Most Malaysian retailers have not announced their Merdeka mechanics yet — they typically land in the first half of August, and many go live only days before Merdeka itself.

So rather than list promotions that have not been confirmed, this covers what is genuinely locked in, with dates and numbers you can plan around. It will be updated as the rest of the season is announced.

How the season actually works

  • Mid-August — home, furniture and electronics expos open the season. These are the deepest discounts of the period, but they run three or four days and then vanish.
  • Late August — fashion and lifestyle retailers ramp up, usually peaking in the 25–31 August window around Merdeka Day itself.
  • Early September — the tail. Stock is picked over, but outlet and clearance pricing is at its lowest.
  • 16 September — Malaysia Day closes the window, and a second short burst of offers often appears around it.

What to do with this now

If you are buying big-ticket home items, the expo window in mid-August is the one to diarise. Those events price to clear and do not repeat.

If you are buying clothing or footwear, there is no advantage to acting yet. The meaningful discounts arrive in the last week of August.

If you are buying groceries or everyday essentials, Merdeka promotions are usually shallow and short. It is rarely worth reorganising a shop around them.
