Merdeka month is deal season -- but not everything advertised is still live
August is Merdeka month in Malaysia -- Hari Merdeka falls on 31 August, and the season traditionally runs right through to Malaysia Day on 16 September. Retailers, F&B chains, telcos and e-commerce platforms all pile in with "Merdeka" branding, but a lot of it is short-lived: single-day promos, week-long flash sales, or campaigns that quietly end before National Day even arrives.
We went through the brands actually running Merdeka-branded promotions this month and kept only the ones with a real, dated offer confirmed on the brand's own site or official page as of 16 August 2026. A few high-profile campaigns -- Shopee's 8.8 Merdeka Sale, Guardian's TikTok Shop flash sale -- had already ended by the time we checked, so they're out. What's left is 8 promos still running, spanning retail, F&B, movies, electronics and travel gear.
Retail & home
1. AEON Retail Malaysia
AEON's Merdeka Month Sale runs storewide across its Malaysian outlets from 30 July to 31 August 2026, spanning electronics, fashion and home essentials, with the campaign hosted on AEON's own dedicated Merdeka microsite. Specific per-category discounts vary by outlet and product line, so the campaign page is the best place to check what's on markdown at your nearest AEON before heading down.
2. Watsons Malaysia
Watsons' nationwide Mega Sale gives up to 80% off the second item on selected Watsons Collection own-brand products, both in-store and online, running from 23 July through 2 September 2026 -- comfortably bridging the entire Merdeka period. It's not exclusively Merdeka-branded, but the timing and nationwide reach make it one of the more useful running deals of the month for household and personal-care restocking.
3. McDonald's Malaysia
McDonald's is running its long-running Merdeka Day tradition again: 1pc Ayam Goreng McD (Regular or Spicy) for RM2 with any McValue Meal (M/L) purchase, available 10am-11:59pm on 31 August only, via Dine-In, Takeaway, Drive-Thru, McDelivery, GrabFood, foodpanda and ShopeeFood. It's a single-day promo, so mark the date -- there's no extension window.
4. IKEA Malaysia
IKEA Malaysia is running a Merdeka Sale campaign across its stores through 31 August 2026, alongside a National Day-themed Special Menu at the IKEA Restaurant that continues through 30 September 2026. The furniture and food promotions are listed separately on IKEA's own campaigns page, so check both if you're planning a trip -- the restaurant menu outlasts the storewide sale by a full month.
Entertainment & electronics
5. GSC Cinemas
GSC (Golden Screen Cinemas) is running a nationwide Buy 1 Free 1 movie ticket promotion for purchases made via SPayLater through the GSC website or mobile app, valid through 31 August 2026. It excludes Aurum Theatre, Aurum TRX and Velvet 163 -- check the participating-hall list before booking if you're headed to one of GSC's premium formats.
6. DirectD
DirectD's Samsung Galaxy Merdeka Sale runs from 3 August to 1 September 2026, with savings of up to RM1,100 on selected Samsung Galaxy devices, both online and at DirectD's physical outlets, while stocks last. It's one of the more concrete electronics deals of the season -- worth a look if a Galaxy upgrade was already on your list.
7. Universal Traveller
Universal Traveller's Merdeka Special 69 promotion is a short, sharp one: selected luggage from RM69, RM169 and RM269, running 13-17 August 2026, with an RM10 instant rebate and a free luggage tag thrown in on selected RM269 purchases. This one closes fast -- it's in its final day as of this article, so act quickly if you need travel gear before a Merdeka getaway.
8. MR.DIY
MR.DIY's Merdeka Riuh Sale 2026 runs storewide from 1-31 August 2026 across its nationwide outlets, covering home essentials, National Day decor and everyday household items. MR.DIY doesn't publish a single blanket discount percentage for the campaign -- per-item markdowns vary by category -- so it's worth a browse in-store or via the dedicated campaign page rather than expecting one flat rate.
What We Left Out
Shopee's 8.8 Merdeka Sale ran 26 July-9 August 2026 and was already over by the time we checked on 16 August -- covered separately while it was live, but it doesn't belong in a "still valid" roundup. Guardian's 8.8 Merdeka Special on TikTok Shop (7-10 August 2026) has the same problem -- expired days before this article. ZUS Coffee's "RM6.70 for Merdeka" drinks promo and Tealive's 31% Merdeka discount turned up in searches, but we could only confirm past-year (2024/2025) instances on the brands' own channels -- not a dated, verified 2026 posting -- so we left them out rather than guess. MINISO Malaysia and Triumph's Merdeka promotions were reported by third-party deal aggregators with plausible dates, but we couldn't independently confirm either one on the brand's own website or official social page this run.
