Penang has no shortage of people who will mind your pet. What it is short of is people who will tell you the price before you call. We went through more than twenty Penang names that turn up in searches and on pet-community lists, and kept eight that showed signs of trading in 2026: a recent post, recent reviews or a live booking page. Several were dropped. One had its Facebook page taken over by a coffee business in Norway, one has posted a closure notice, one is listed as temporarily closed and one turned out to be in Singapore.
Of the eight, five publish a price, and four of those five are cat-only. That is the honest shape of the market. Cat owners on the island can compare rooms, cameras and per-night rates online. Dog owners mostly cannot: only Ritz Pawton puts a dog boarding rate on its website, and it is a single "from" figure with no size bands.
How to choose a boarding place
Decide what you are paying for. Penang cat hotels charge by the room, not by the cat, and the room sets the price. A two-cat capsule at Neko Inn starts at RM40 a night, while a 16 square metre glass suite for up to six cats starts at RM130. If you have one cat, the cheapest room is usually enough. If you have three, a shared suite can work out cheaper per cat than three separate cages.
Ask about vaccinations before you book. Every operator that states its rules asks for a current vaccination certificate and up-to-date flea and tick treatment. Neko Inn also turns away FIP-positive cats and asks that ringworm medication be finished a week before the stay. Gill's requires all boarders to be fully vaccinated and free of ticks and fleas. If your pet is due a booster, do it at least a couple of weeks before you leave.
Check the camera claim. Neko Inn advertises a 24-hour live camera, Ufi's in Kepala Batas has individual CCTV you can view by phone, and CheekyCatHouse and Ritz Pawton send video updates. These are different things. A live feed lets you check at 2am. A daily video depends on staff remembering.
Work out transport. Not every place collects. Neko Inn publishes a cat limousine price list, from RM40 each way within Bayan Lepas to RM80 for Tanjung Bungah, Batu Ferringhi or the mainland (plus toll). Gill's offers a pick-up service on request. If you are flying out of Bayan Lepas early, a Bayan Baru drop-off the evening before can save you a cross-island drive.
Book festive dates early, and read the closures. Nobody we checked publishes a festive surcharge. What they do publish is capacity warnings and closures. Neko Inn opened Christmas and New Year bookings on 23 September. Ufi's opened Hari Raya 2026 bookings in October 2025 and said its rooms were nearly full by February. Petpampering closed for three days over Raya 2026 and set a last check-in date. QQ Pet Boarding closed for two days at Chinese New Year. Ask for the last check-in and earliest check-out dates around Deepavali on 8 November and the year-end break before you buy flights.
Dogs on the island need a licence. Dogs on Penang island fall under the MBPP (Dogs) By-Laws, and in September 2026 the council revoked an owner's licence and issued an RM250 compound after a dog attack at Pearl Hill. A boarding place will not ask for your licence, but your dog should have one anyway.
The eight places
Prices are per night unless stated and come from each operator's own website or social posts, read on 21 October 2026. Where an operator publishes no price, we say so.
How to pick, in one minute
- One cat, tight budget, mainland: Petpampering in Bukit Mertajam at RM25.
- One or two cats, near the airport: Neko Inn's RM40 capsule or RM70 suite, with a camera you can check.
- Several cats who get along: CheekyCatHouse's RM150 suite for up to eight, or Neko Inn's RM120 to RM130 rooms for up to six.
- A cat that hates cages: Catsville Lodge, cage-free, on quote.
- A dog: Ritz Pawton first, because it publishes a rate. Then phone Gill's and QQ.
- A pet with a medical condition: Gill's, because it is a vet clinic.
Whichever you choose, visit before the busy dates, see where your pet will actually sleep, and get the check-out time in writing.
