Choosing an international school in KL shapes your daily commute, which exams your child eventually sits, and how portable their education is if the family moves again. The Klang Valley market is fragmented: British, IB, American and Australian schools run side by side from Klang to Ampang, each with its own fee structure, admissions cycle and waitlist.
The first version of this guide left fees out. That was the wrong call, because seven of these eight schools publish full fee schedules on their own websites. Every figure below was re-read from each school's own fee page or fee PDF on 15 Sep 2026. Most schools use the 2026/27 academic year. AISM uses the 2026 calendar year, because its school year runs from January to December.
How to Choose a KL International School
- Decide the exit first. A-Levels suit the UK and Commonwealth, the IB Diploma travels best between countries, ISKL's AP and Pursuits routes suit US colleges, and the NSW HSC leads naturally to Australia.
- Compare the first-year bill, not the headline tuition. Enrolment or registration fees range from RM9,000 at Sri KDU Klang to RM59,000 at ISKL, and most schools also hold a refundable deposit.
- Find where the RM60,000 SST line falls for your child's year group. It adds 6% the year your child moves up past it.
- Map the commute before you tour. Sungai Buloh, Klang, Seri Kembangan and Ampang Hilir sit in different corners of the Klang Valley, and bus fares are priced by zone.
- Check live availability. Some year groups at the established schools are already full for 2026/27.
British Curriculum Schools
Garden International School (GIS) was founded in 1951 and has been in Mont Kiara since 1996, with Nursery and Reception taught at a separate Early Years Centre in Desa Sri Hartamas. It teaches the English National Curriculum into IGCSE and A-Levels with Cambridge, Pearson Edexcel and AQA. For 2026/27, annual tuition is RM52,440 in Nursery, RM85,590 in Year 1, RM118,170 in Years 7 to 8 and RM126,870 in Years 10 to 13. Its current offer, for applications made by 20 September 2026, rebates the RM1,500 application fee and halves the registration fee for new Early Years and Year 1 to 6 pupils.
Alice Smith School is the oldest British international school in Malaysia and the only not-for-profit British international school in KL. Primary is on Jalan Bellamy and Secondary is in Seri Kembangan. For 2026/27, fees run from RM53,730 a year for normal-day Pre-school to RM122,370 for Years 10 to 13. Books and materials are included, and it publishes bus fares per term. Its sibling discount only applies from the third child, at 6%.
Sri KDU International School (Klang) is the budget British option on this list and the only school whose published fees never reach the SST line. Its 2026/27 fees are RM21,230 a year in Early Years, RM31,180 in Year 1 and RM57,640 in Years 10 to 11. Teaching is Cambridge-based and ends at IGCSE, so students need a different school for A-Levels. In 2026 it opened a boarding house for students aged 11 and up, priced at RM40,000 to RM50,000 a year for full boarding.
IB Schools
Mont'Kiara International School (M'KIS) has been an IB World School since 2000, offering PYP, MYP and the Diploma, and is WASC-accredited. It announced in May 2026 that it was joining Nord Anglia Education. M'KIS bills per semester: RM53,102 a semester for Grades 1 to 5 and RM65,270 for Grades 9 to 12, which is RM130,540 a year before SST. Its RM28,000 admission fee steps down for younger siblings and is waived for transfers from other accredited Malaysian international schools.
IGB International School (IGBIS) in Sierramas, Sungai Buloh is, by its own account, the only school in Malaysia authorised for all four IB programmes, including the Career-related Programme. For 2026/27 it charges RM50,800 a year for Early Years 1, RM86,500 for Grades 1 to 5 and RM118,200 for Grades 11 to 12. It waives the RM25,000 enrolment fee for students coming from Malaysian government schools or local international schools.
Fairview International School, founded in 1978 in Wangsa Maju, runs PYP, MYP and the Diploma from pre-school to Year 13. It is the only school here that keeps tuition behind an enquiry form. It publishes a RM1,000 application fee and a RM2,500 or RM5,000 enrolment fee, and its own 2024 blog put fees at about USD 8,000 a year. Get the current KL schedule in writing before comparing.
American Curriculum
The International School of Kuala Lumpur (ISKL) has been in Ampang Hilir since 1965 and has offered the IB Diploma on a non-selective basis since 1989. It also offers AP courses and a mixed Pursuits route in Grades 11 to 12. It is the most expensive school on this list: RM70,200 to RM143,400 a year, 6% SST on every grade, and a one-time RM59,000 registration fee for new students from Prep Senior up. It offers no sibling discounts. Buses cost RM2,745 to RM4,085 a semester.
Australian Curriculum
Australian International School Malaysia (AISM) sits on a 7.5-acre campus in Mines Resort City and teaches the New South Wales curriculum through to the HSC. It calls itself the world's first Certified Visible Learning School, certified since 2016. AISM held its 2026 fees flat at RM45,760 a year for Nursery, RM62,640 for Year 1 and RM97,600 for Year 11. Textbooks and HSC exam fees are included. Its HSC Scholarship for Year 11 entry in January 2027, covering up to 100% of fees, closes on 30 September 2026.
Where the 6% SST Line Falls
Since 1 July 2025, year groups whose annual fees exceed RM60,000 per student pay 6% service tax. On these schedules the line falls in a different place at almost every school:
- Sri KDU Klang: never crossed. The top fee is RM57,640.
- AISM: Foundation is RM960 under at RM59,040, and Year 1 is over at RM62,640.
- IGBIS: Early Years 2 is RM700 under at RM59,300, and Kindergarten is over at RM71,300.
- Garden International School: Nursery is under at RM52,440, and Reception is over at RM62,340.
- Alice Smith: normal-day Pre-school is under at RM53,730, and extended-day Pre-school (RM66,270) and every later year are over.
- Mont'Kiara International School: no SST on Pre-K3 or Pre-K4, and SST from Kindergarten up.
- ISKL: every grade is over, from RM70,200.
In practice, the move from the last untaxed year to the first taxed one costs twice: once for the fee step-up and again for the 6% on top. Worked First-Year Budgets: A New Year 1 Pupil
These totals add the published tuition, application fee, enrolment or registration fee and refundable deposit for one new child in Year 1 or Grade 1. They exclude SST, buses, uniform, meals and devices:
- Sri KDU Klang (Malaysian student): RM31,180 tuition + RM1,500 + RM9,000 + RM8,000 deposit = RM49,680. Tuition is under RM60,000, so no SST.
- AISM (2026 fees): RM62,640 + RM1,300 + RM20,000 + RM15,385 deposit = RM99,325, plus RM3,758.40 SST on tuition.
- IGBIS: RM86,500 + RM1,000 + RM25,000 + RM20,000 deposit = RM132,500, plus RM5,190 SST on tuition.
- Alice Smith: RM89,070 + RM1,500 + RM20,000 + RM20 association fee + RM24,000 deposit = RM134,590, plus RM5,344.20 SST on tuition.
- Garden International School: RM85,590 + RM1,500 + RM20,000 + RM28,530 deposit = RM135,620, plus RM5,135.40 SST on tuition.
- Mont'Kiara International School: RM106,204 + RM1,700 + RM28,000 = RM135,904, plus RM6,372.24 SST on tuition. It publishes no refundable deposit.
- ISKL: RM115,600 + RM1,800 + RM59,000 = RM176,400, plus RM6,936 SST on tuition. Its enrolment deposit is already counted inside tuition.
Deposits come back when you leave with proper notice, so the money you never see again is lower. At GIS, for example, it is RM107,090 once the RM28,530 deposit is taken out. In year two the one-off fees fall away, and the bill becomes tuition, SST and extras.
How to Pick
- You want the lowest fees with a British pathway: Sri KDU Klang, if an IGCSE finish and a Klang address work for you.
- You want A-Levels in central KL: Garden International School or Alice Smith, which are RM4,500 apart at the top.
- You move countries often: an IB continuum school. IGBIS has the widest programme choice, and Mont'Kiara International School is the Mont Kiara option.
- You want US colleges or maximum course choice: ISKL, if the RM59,000 registration fee is in budget.
- You are heading to Australia: AISM, and apply for the HSC Scholarship by 30 September 2026 if your child enters Year 11 in 2027.
- You need boarding in the Klang Valley: Sri KDU Klang is the only option on this list.
What We Left Out
Three names that regularly come up in "KL international school" searches didn't make this list because their campuses sit outside the Klang Valley. Marlborough College Malaysia is a British boarding and day school in Iskandar Puteri, Johor. Epsom College in Malaysia is in Bandar Enstek, Negeri Sembilan, near KLIA and about 45 minutes from central KL. Repton International School Malaysia is in Johor Bahru despite its national branding. All three are worth a look if boarding is the priority, just not as a daily KL commute.
