Short answer: for a real Sarawak River view at a fair price, book Grand Margherita (river-view Superior Twin at RM250 a night on its "My Getaway" rate) or Riverside Majestic (river-view Premium King RM320). For a genuine heritage stay, book The Ranee on Main Bazaar (RM378 all-in with breakfast) or The Marian on Wayang Street (from RM183.60). The cheapest good room on this list is The LimeTree in Padungan at RM200 including tax and breakfast. Every price below was read on 15 September 2026 from the hotel's own booking engine, for one night, two adults, checking in Wednesday 7 October 2026.

Kuching doesn't have a "hotel strip" the way KL or Penang does. Its best addresses are strung along the Sarawak River on Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman, or tucked into restored shophouses and mansions in the Old Town, so it is easy to get burned by old blog posts recommending hotels that have rebranded or don't exist under the name people remember. We checked each hotel's own website, its own booking engine and its own offers page before including it, and two commonly-cited names didn't survive (see "What we left out").

How to choose a Kuching hotel

  • Decide whether you want to look at the river or walk to it. Only some rooms face the water, and the engines sell river view as a separate room type. At Grand Margherita the river-view twin costs the same RM250 as the city-view king; at Riverside Majestic it is RM20 more; at Pullman it is RM55 more.
  • Read the tax line, not the headline. The Waterfront, The Ranee and The Marian quote rates *before* 8% service tax; Pullman and The LimeTree quote *after*. A RM335.56 room is RM362.40 at checkout.
  • Foreign guests add RM10 a room a night in federal tourism tax, usually paid at check-in. Malaysians don't pay it. We found no Sarawak state or Kuching city per-night levy of the kind Penang and Melaka charge.
  • Check the Saturday before assuming a flat rate. Most hotels here priced 10 October exactly like 7 October, but The Waterfront had only one room type left (a RM674.07 suite) for that Saturday.
  • Heritage means trade-offs. The Marian takes no children under 12 and its cheapest room has bunk beds; The Ranee has only 24 suites, and just five of them are the named Ranee Suites.

International riverside hotels

The big full-service hotels, most of them on or beside the river along Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman.

1. Riverside Majestic Hotel

Now operated by Hemisphere, the same group that runs Grand Margherita next door. It is really two hotels: the Puteri Wing (241 rooms, the one its main booking engine sells) and the separate Astana Wing, which has its own website. The Puteri Wing's dining is Majestic Restaurant, River Palace Cantonese Restaurant and Puteri Lobby Lounge; the Astana Wing has Sape Restaurant, Deli Cafe, Sky Lounge and Suasana on 18. Attached is the hotel's five-storey shopping podium with a bowling centre, and the hotel puts the waterfront and Darul Hana Bridge about five minutes' walk away.

Rates (7 Oct): Deluxe King (City View) RM300 room only on the My Getaway rate, RM320 with breakfast; Premium King (River View) RM320, RM340 with breakfast; Best Flexible room only RM360. Saturday 10 October priced identically. The engine did not state its tax basis before the guest-details step.

2. Hilton Kuching

On Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman facing the river, with 315 rooms and suites. Hilton's August 2025 renovation release lists a pool deck with a separate kids' pool, a fitness centre, a refreshed Executive Lounge and Malaysia's first Hilton Kids Club. Dining includes River View Café (breakfast buffet), The Terrace, The Koffee, the RYE speakeasy and Toh Yuen, a halal-certified Cantonese restaurant.

Rates: hilton.com blocks automated checks, so we could not read a room rate. What Hilton does publish through its dining booking page: weekend dinner buffet RM238 nett adult / RM198 senior / RM119 child, and weekend high tea RM138 / RM98 / RM69 nett.

3. Pullman Kuching

At Interhill Place, Jalan Mathies, in the Golden Triangle. It sits on a hill roughly a kilometre inland, which is what gives the upper floors their view over the river and city. It has 389 rooms and is still refurbishing in phases: the lobby, restaurants, fitness centre and 161 rooms are done, the Executive Lounge is due around October 2026, and trade press (TTG Asia, 13 August 2026) reports full completion targeted for mid-2027. It stays open throughout, so ask which room category you are getting if a renovated room matters. Its Chinese restaurant, Nu Er Hong, is billed as halal. Check-in 3pm, check-out 12pm.

Rates (7 Oct, taxes and fees included): Deluxe Room (City View) RM475.52, or RM451.75 for ALL Accor members; Premium Deluxe (River View) RM530.60, member RM504.08; Deluxe Executive with lounge access and breakfast RM761.18. Same on 10 October. Accor's site defaults to euros; switch the currency to MYR.

4. Grand Margherita Hotel

Opened in 1976 as Holiday Inn Kuching and now branded "Grand Margherita Hotel by Hemisphere". It has 274 rooms with river or city views, sits beside Sarawak Plaza, and says all its kitchens are halal-certified. Restaurants include Meisan (Chinese) and Orchid Garden Coffee House.

Rates: this is the best-value river view on the list. On the My Getaway school-break rate, the Superior King (City View) and the Superior Twin (River View) were both RM250 room only or RM280 with breakfast, on 7 and 10 October alike. The ordinary Best Flexible room-only rate was RM272 on the Wednesday and RM344 on the Saturday, so the promo saves RM94 on a Saturday night. The poster prints the price as "RM250+"; the engine did not show the tax line before the booking step.

Boutique and heritage stays

Smaller properties, most in the Old Town and Padungan.

5. The Waterfront Hotel Kuching

An art-themed hotel ("An Artrageous Hotel", in its own words) on top of Plaza Merdeka at 68 Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg, looking over Padang Merdeka and the river. It has 208 rooms including 31 suites and 2 loft suites, and is 100% smoke-free. Check-in 3pm. It is the largest of the "boutique" picks and has full hotel facilities.

Rates (7 Oct, before 8% SST): Deluxe Twin (Compound View) on the non-refundable Advance Purchase rate RM335.56 (RM362.40 with SST); Premier King (River View) RM368.89 (RM398.40); Deluxe Twin with breakfast RM442.31. On Saturday 10 October only a Junior King Suite was left, at RM674.07.

6. The Ranee Boutique Suites

Twenty-four suites rebuilt from two 19th-century shophouses at 6 and 7 Main Bazaar, facing the waterfront. The five premium Ranee Suites are named after Brooke-era women (Margaret, Sylvia, Leonora, Elizabeth and Valerie). The hotel now books through letsbook.me.

Rates (7 Oct, breakfast included): Standard Suite RM350 + RM28 tax = RM378; Executive Suite, which the hotel says faces the state assembly building, the river and the Astana, RM520 + RM41.60 = RM561.60. On 10 October the Standard Suite was the same price and the Executive Suite was not listed. Some Standard Suites have river windows, but you cannot choose one when booking.

7. The LimeTree Hotel

At Lot 317 Jalan Abell in Padungan, about a ten-minute walk from the waterfront. It has 50 rooms and suites, the halal Cafe Sublime, and the LimeLight Rooftop Lounge for drinks with a city and river view. Travelife lists it as Gold-certified for sustainability in 2023.

Rates (7 Oct): Standard City King or Twin with breakfast RM200, "total including taxes and fees", the cheapest all-in room on this list; Executive Deluxe RM265. Same on 10 October. The engine names no river-view room.

8. The Marian Boutique Lodging House

A hilltop mansion at 25 and 27 Wayang Street, a few minutes' walk from the waterfront and Main Bazaar. It was built in 1885 by the Hokkien merchant Ong Ewe Hai, sold to the Anglican Diocese in 1933, used as the boarding house for St Mary's School until 1967 and as a diocesan guesthouse until 2013, and reopened as a boutique hotel after that. It has 40 rooms, including family rooms, a two-bedroom apartment and a Chapel Wing category. No children under 12.

Rates (7 Oct, room only, before tax): Caroline Sharp Room (bunk beds) RM170 + RM13.60 SST = RM183.60; Mary Sharp Room (queen) RM190. Same on 10 October. The engine shows a "Click To Get 15% off" button that takes the bunk room to RM145; we didn't test what it requires. No room is sold as river view.

What one night actually costs

The same Wednesday, 7 October 2026, two adults. "Malaysian" is the rate plus service tax where the hotel quotes it separately; a foreign guest adds RM10 tourism tax.

  • The LimeTree, Standard with breakfast: RM200 Malaysian / RM210 foreign guest
  • Grand Margherita, river-view Superior Twin with breakfast: RM280 on the poster's "+" basis / RM290 foreign guest, before any tax the checkout adds
  • The Ranee, Standard Suite with breakfast: RM378 / RM388
  • The Waterfront, river-view Premier King, room only: RM398.40 / RM408.40
  • Pullman, river-view Premium Deluxe, room only: RM530.60 / RM540.60 (RM504.08 / RM514.08 as an ALL Accor member)

Rates move daily. Treat these as a same-date comparison between hotels, not a promise of what you'll pay on your dates.

Offers on the hotels' own channels (checked 15 Sep 2026)

  • Grand Margherita: My Getaway school-break rate RM250+ room only / RM280+ with breakfast, to 31 Dec 2026. Harmony Feast at Meisan: Set A for 10 RM338+, Set B for 5 RM168+, to 31 Dec 2026. A "3D2N Executive Room Web Exclusive" is also listed to 31 Dec 2026, but its banner gives no price or discount. The "complimentary upgrade" listing only says you "stand a chance" of an upgrade to an Executive Club Room if you book on the website or through Insiders Club, so it is not guaranteed.
  • Riverside Majestic Astana Wing: 20% off the Sape Restaurant Hi-Tea Buffet (RM75+ adult, RM43+ child 6-12), Sat and Sun 2-5pm, bought as an e-voucher in the Insiders Club app at least two days ahead. No end date is published. The main Riverside Majestic offers page still shows "No Offers Available", which is why it is easy to miss.
  • Pullman: Mastercard "Breakfast on Us", free breakfast when you book and pay with Mastercard while signed in to ALL Accor, 4 Aug 2026 to 3 Feb 2027.
  • The Waterfront: "Purchase Ahead, Save More", up to 20% off when you book at least 21 days ahead on the hotel's own site, Deluxe and Premier rooms only, prepaid and non-refundable, not valid Fridays, Saturdays, public holidays or peak periods; book and stay by 31 Dec 2027.
  • Hilton: Signature Peking Duck Three Ways at Toh Yuen, RM198+, dine-in, 1 Aug to 30 Sep 2026.
  • The Ranee, The LimeTree, The Marian: nothing published on their own sites.

What we left out

  • DoubleTree by Hilton Kuching: Hilton's Kuching locations page lists one hotel, Hilton Kuching, and nothing marked coming soon.
  • Le Méridien Kuching: no such hotel or announcement. Malaysia's Le Méridiens are in Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabalu.
  • Sheraton Kuching: a real and significant omission to know about. It opened in October 2023 on Jalan Padungan as East Malaysia's first Sheraton, with rooms facing the river or city and an infinity pool. We haven't ranked it because Marriott's site blocks the rate check we ran on every hotel here; check its river-view room price directly before comparing.
  • Imperial Riverbank Hotel: a 109-room three-star on the waterfront. It's a good budget river location, but not a full-service or boutique pick.
  • voco Kuching: opened June 2026 in the former Four Points, but it is out by the airport, not in town.
  • Threehouse Bed & Breakfast: a charming Chinatown guesthouse, but with shared bathrooms it is a B&B rather than a boutique hotel.
  • Aggregator "5% instant discount" codes: these are booking-platform offers, not hotel promotions.

How to pick

  • First trip, want the river and the waterfront on your doorstep: Grand Margherita on My Getaway (river-view twin at the city-view price) or Riverside Majestic's Premium King.
  • Want a pool, kids' club and a big breakfast: Hilton Kuching.
  • Want the best view and don't mind a short walk downhill: Pullman's river-view Premium Deluxe, but ask for a renovated room.
  • Want old Kuching: The Ranee for a suite on Main Bazaar, The Marian for a colonial mansion (adults and over-12s only).
  • On a budget but not in a backpacker bed: The LimeTree, RM200 with breakfast and tax.
