Aggregator lists were used only to find names, and several of them are now wrong: one listed track has closed, and two others are placed in the wrong town.

Go-karting in the Klang Valley has split into three kinds of track in the past few years. There are big outdoor petrol circuits on the edges of the city, electric karts in car parks and malls, and indoor drift tracks where the point is to slide rather than to set a lap. Prices look similar, RM65 to RM90 for an adult session, but what you get for that money varies a lot.

How to compare go-kart tracks

  • Minutes, not sessions. Most tracks sell 10 minutes. Evolt sells 8, and RUD's Sepang circuit sells 12. RM70 for 8 minutes is RM8.75 a minute; RM79 for 10 minutes at RUD is RM7.90.
  • Track length. RUD's Puchong circuit is 1,580m and LYL's is 1.5km, so you get long straights. Blastacars in Sungei Wang is a 200m indoor floor built for drifting. A kart at 35km/h in a car park and one at 80km/h on a full circuit are different outings.
  • Petrol or electric. LYL and RUD run petrol karts with Honda-type engines. MyKart and Evolt are electric, which means instant torque and no fumes indoors.
  • The extras. MyKart charges RM7 for a balaclava, LYL RM8 and i-City RM10, plus gloves. Evolt adds a compulsory balaclava at checkout. Bring your own where the track allows it.
  • Lap-time gates. Faster karts are not for sale to first-timers. You have to prove yourself on the slower kart first, so budget two sessions if you want to try the quick one.

The rules that apply almost everywhere

Adult karts need a height of 140cm to 145cm. Closed-toe shoes are compulsory at every track we checked, and MyKart and i-City also ban loose clothing and dresses. Under-18s need a parent's consent or presence. i-City goes further and does not allow pregnant women or people with heart disease or hypertension on its karts. If you are bringing a group, check the height rule for every child before you go; it is the most common reason people are turned away.

When to go

Most tracks open in the afternoon on weekdays and around noon at weekends, and several run late. RUD Puchong is open until 2am daily from 30 September, K1 until 1am on Fridays and Saturdays, and MyKart, Evolt, LYL and i-City until midnight. Weekday evenings are the quietest time at the mall tracks.

How to pick

For a first go with a mixed group, K1 Karting (RM65, and half price on Wednesdays for women) and Evolt (a kart for every age from 3 up) are the easiest. For speed and a real circuit, LYL in Sungai Long and RUD in Puchong are the ones to book. If you are in the city centre without a car, Blastacars at Sungei Wang and Go-Kart BTSKL at Berjaya Times Square are both reachable by train, the first for drifting and the second as the cheapest ten minutes in town.

Whichever you choose, message the track on the day. Private events and races close tracks without much notice; LYL, for example, was shut from 24 to 27 September for a race meeting.
