What changed on 8 September

The cart rule is dead. We opened a fresh guest cart on guardian.com.my on 8 September 2026 and added three identical Guardian Elastic Bandage 5cm at RM5.90 each. The total came back as RM17.70 with the discounts field empty. During the promotion the same trio deducted RM5.90 and you paid RM11.80. There is no longer any group-of-three rule, which also means the trap that dominated the original article is gone: you can now put a baby shampoo, a packet of green peas and a serum in the same basket without cancelling anything, because there is nothing to cancel.

The pool has become a real sale. On 3 September every one of the 4,158 qualifying products carried a selling price identical to its normal price. Today the Beauty Days category holds 4,262 products and 3,001 of them, 70.4 per cent, are marked below normal price. Among the discounted items the average cut is 21.0 per cent. That is meaningfully better than what Buy 2 Free 1 actually delivered: our simulation of 200,000 random trios drawn from the real pool put the average saving at 15.3 per cent.

The markdown ladder, counted product by product on 8 September:

  • 20 per cent off, 1,309 products, the single biggest block
  • 30 per cent off, 556 products
  • 10 per cent off, 421 products
  • 15 per cent off, 413 products
  • 25 per cent off, 179 products
  • 50 per cent off, 29 products
  • 40 per cent off, 19 products
  • 70 per cent off, 17 products, including the Ily By Jeong Family kids detangling shampoo at RM26.70 from RM89.00, Aprilskin's Real Calendula Foam Cleanser at RM22.92 from RM76.40 and a Catrice Calligraph Artist Matte Liner at RM8.70 from RM29.00

In total, 2,155 products are at 20 per cent or more and 660 are at 30 per cent or more. The pool itself has shifted with it: the cheapest qualifying item is now RM1.40 rather than RM1.90, the dearest is RM390.00 rather than RM513.90, and the median selling price has fallen from RM38.40 to RM32.64.

The two baskets that made the case against this deal, re-priced

Both of them are now cheaper without any promotion at all.

The RM92.30 trio. A Revlon Colorstay Multi-Liner at RM59.90, a Sunsilk Shampoo Straight 625ml and the RM5.90 bandage cost RM92.30 during the promotion and saved RM5.90, so you paid RM86.40. The Sunsilk has since been cut from RM26.50 to RM17.22, the other two are unchanged, and the same three items rang up at RM83.02 in our cart on 8 September with no discount line. That is RM3.38 less than the best the promotion could manage on those items.

The RM526.00 basket. The bandage, a RM6.20 Vaseline Repairing Jelly and the Pristin Gold Omega-3 Fish Oil 1200mg 90s x 2 + 30s came to RM526.00 and saved RM5.90, the 1.1 per cent result that gave this article its headline. The fish oil is now RM295.00, down from RM513.90, a 43 per cent cut and the single largest saving anywhere in the pool at RM218.90. The same three items now total RM307.10. A day after the promotion ended, its worst basket is RM213.00 cheaper.

Buy 2 Save More: the mechanic that is still running

guardian's September e-catalogue, published as a flipbook at guardian.com.my/catalogue, is headlined Buy 2 Save More, and its cover carries the line "Promo valid from 2 - 29 September 2026". It ran alongside the online Buy 2 Free 1 for that promotion's entire six days, and nobody had to choose between them. It now has three weeks left.

Unlike Buy 2 Free 1, this one is a fixed price for two, printed next to the normal price, so you know the exact saving before you reach the till. The catalogue lists eleven of them. Sorted by what you actually save:

  • Cebion Effervescent Vitamin C 1g 10s x 4 Pack-of-2 + 10s, buy 2 for RM120.00 against RM119.41 each. Saving RM118.82, effectively half price.
  • Kinohimitsu Skinny Coffee 20g x 14s, buy 2 for RM85.00 against RM85.90 each. Two boxes cost 90 sen less than one at normal price. Saving RM86.80.
  • Pristin Gold Fish Oil 1200mg 30s, buy 2 for RM125.00 against RM101.00 each. Saving RM77.00.
  • Alcon Opti-Free Puremoist 300ml, buy 2 for RM70.00 against RM47.10 each. Saving RM24.20.
  • Yukazan Vit Tomato+ 10s, buy 2 for RM40.00 against RM29.90 each. Saving RM19.80.
  • 21st Century Probiotics 30s, buy 2 for RM45.00 against RM27.90 each. Saving RM10.80.
  • Gaviscon Double Action Sachet 5 x 10ml, buy 2 for RM45.00 against RM27.50 each. Saving RM10.00.
  • Suparkool Cooling Eye Patch 5s, buy 2 for RM35.00 against RM22.00 each. Saving RM9.00.
  • Daile Collagen + Astaxanthin Lychee Jelly 10mg 1s, buy 2 for RM10.00 against RM7.90 each. Saving RM5.80.
  • Blood Backheat or Neckheat Patch 2s, buy 2 for RM20.00 against RM12.40 each. Saving RM4.80.
  • Good Morning RTD Rose Jelly 200ml, buy 2 for RM5.00 against RM2.90 each. Saving RM0.80.

Check the website before you carry the catalogue to the till

The printed price is not always the better one. We looked up all eleven on guardian.com.my on 8 September and two of them are cheaper online, because guardian lists its own pre-packed Bundle of 2 at a discount the flyer does not match:

  • Gaviscon Double Action Sachet 5 x 10ml. The catalogue asks RM45.00 for two. Online the single is RM17.87, down from RM27.50, and the listed Bundle of 2 is RM35.75. The printed offer is RM9.25 worse.
  • Alcon Opti-Free Pure Moist 300ml. Catalogue RM70.00 for two, online Bundle of 2 RM66.00. RM4.00 worse in print.

Everything else on the list sits at full price online with no bundle, so the catalogue wins comfortably. The Kinohimitsu Skinny Coffee, the Cebion pack and the Pristin Gold 30s are all at their normal prices on the website today, which is what makes their catalogue prices worth a trip.

guardian has an online-exclusive 9.9 Mega Sale category running with 321 products, 221 of them marked down by an average of 30.6 per cent, a deeper average cut than the Beauty Days pool. Seventy-six items are at half price, most of them MAKE OVER cosmetics: the Powerstay Brow Definer Mascara at RM22.95 from RM45.90, the Hydrastay Glow Fluid Foundation at RM37.95 from RM75.90, the Cliquematte Lip Stylo at RM23.60 from RM47.20.

That is the answer for the cosmetics-only shoppers this article originally told to wait a week. They were right to wait. One caveat we could not resolve: the banner sitting on that category page is recycled artwork for the 11.11 Mega Sale of 6 to 13 November 2025, so guardian has not actually published a date window for the 9.9 sale. The prices above are what the site quoted on 8 September 2026. Treat the window as unknown and check before you build a large order.

What ran from 2 to 7 September

The rest of this article is the record of that window, tested in the live cart while it was running. guardian's Beauty Days block changes roughly every six days and the mechanics repeat, so this is still the clearest description of how Buy 2 Free 1 behaves at guardian when it comes back.

guardian's Beauty Days block changes every week, and most weeks it is a flat percentage on one department: 40 per cent off all skin care in mid-August, 50 per cent off all cosmetics for the last two weeks of the month. The window that opened on 2 September is a different animal. It covers four departments at once, it lets you mix across them, and it is the first Beauty Days in weeks where the size of your discount depends entirely on how you build the basket.

Guardian's own campaign artwork states the mechanic in full: Buy 2 Free 1, ALL SKIN CARE, COSMETICS, PERSONAL CARE & HEALTH CARE, MIX & MATCH, 2 ~ 7 SEPTEMBER 2026, with a yellow badge reading "FREE on lowest priced items". The terms post on guardian's own site repeats it and adds the two standard qualifiers: discounts apply to participating brands and ranges only, and some brands or products are only available at selected stores.

What the cart actually does

We ran seven baskets through the live checkout on guardian.com.my on 3 September 2026, as a guest with no account. Every time the discount appeared it carried the same label: *"Buy 2 Free 1 Mix & Match, add 3 item and get discount (based on normal price\*)"*. Three findings came out of it, and none of them are on the poster.

The rule repeats, but only in threes. Three identical RM5.90 sheet masks came to RM17.70 and the cart took RM5.90 off, so you pay RM11.80. Six of the same mask came to RM35.40 and the cart took RM11.80 off, two free items rather than one. But four of that mask still only got one free item, and so did five. A four-item basket is a three-item deal with a full-price item stapled to it, and the effective discount drops from 33.3 per cent to 25 per cent. Five items drops it to 20 per cent. If you are at four, either drop one or go to six.

The free item is the cheapest, and that decides everything. This is where most of the value leaks away. We put a Guardian Elastic Bandage at RM5.90, a Vaseline Repairing Jelly at RM6.20 and a Pristin Gold Omega-3 Fish Oil at RM513.90 into one cart. Subtotal RM526.00. Discount: RM5.90. That is 1.1 per cent off a RM526 shop. A more ordinary basket behaves the same way in miniature: a Revlon Colorstay Multi-Liner at RM59.90, a Sunsilk Shampoo Straight 625ml at RM26.50 and that same RM5.90 bandage came to RM92.30 and saved RM5.90, or 6.4 per cent.

One wrong item and you get nothing. This is the trap worth remembering. We took two qualifying items and added a Sebamed Baby Shampoo 150ml at RM22.18, which sits in baby care rather than the four promoted departments. The discount line disappeared entirely: RM0.00 off, not a partial deal. We repeated it with a RM3.30 packet of Meadows coated green peas from the household aisle and got the same RM0.00. Two out of three is not two thirds of the offer here. It is none of it.

What is actually in the pool

guardian's Beauty Days category on its own site held 4,158 products when we read it on 3 September. We pulled every one of them to see what the four departments really contain.

By department, skin care is the largest slice at roughly 1,510 products, followed by cosmetics at around 1,020, personal care at about 890 and health at about 570, with a men's grooming shelf of roughly 540 overlapping the personal care count. That is a genuinely broad pool, and it is why the mix and match wording matters: a shampoo, an eyeliner and a bottle of supplements can legitimately sit in the same qualifying trio, which we confirmed in the cart.

By price, the pool is wider than the headline suggests. The cheapest qualifying item is RM1.90 and the dearest is RM513.90, with a median of RM38.40. About 240 products sit under RM10, 813 between RM10 and RM19.90, 650 between RM20 and RM29.90, 863 between RM30 and RM49.90, 1,134 between RM50 and RM99.90, and 458 at RM100 and above.

One more thing was worth saying plainly at the time, because it changed how you compared prices that week: not a single one of the 4,158 products was marked down. Every shelf price equalled the normal price. It was a cart rule, not a sale. That is the fact that has since flipped completely: 3,001 of the 4,262 products in the pool carry a markdown as of 8 September 2026.

The number nobody prints

Because the free item is the cheapest of the three, the actual discount you get is the cheapest item divided by the total of all three. It only reaches 33.3 per cent when all three cost the same.

We simulated 200,000 random trios drawn from the real 4,158-item pool. The average saving came out at 15.3 per cent, less than half the headline. And 26.1 per cent of random trios saved under 10 per cent. So "Buy 2 Free 1" was a 33 per cent offer only for shoppers who deliberately price-matched their basket. For everyone else it landed somewhere near 15 per cent, which is the number to hold on to when the mechanic returns.

How to build a basket that works

The strategy is simple once the arithmetic is clear. Pick three items that cost roughly the same, and make that shared price as high as you are genuinely willing to spend. Three items at RM49.90 each cost RM149.70 and save RM49.90. Three items at RM38.40, the pool median, cost RM115.20 and save RM38.40.

Never let one cheap item ride along with two expensive ones. If you want the RM5.90 bandage and a RM59.90 liner in the same order, the bandage is the item being given away, and it is throwing away the value of the liner's group. Buy the bandage in its own trio of small items, or leave it for another week.

Count in threes at the till. Six items is two free items. Four and five are not.

Keep every item inside skin care, cosmetics, personal care or health care. Baby care, household and snacks are outside the promotion, and adding one of them cancels the discount for the entire basket rather than just for itself.

Who should skip this one

Cosmetics-only shoppers were the group who lost out. For the last two weeks of August, Beauty Days ran a flat 50 per cent off all cosmetics. A best case of 33.3 per cent is a worse headline than 50 per cent, so anyone waiting to restock foundation and mascara was told here to check the next window before committing. That advice paid off: the 9.9 Mega Sale now has 76 items at half price, most of them cosmetics.

Anyone buying a single expensive item should also wait. There is nothing here for a one-item purchase, and padding a RM300 serum with two cheap fillers only discounts the filler.

The people this suits are households restocking several similar items at once: three shampoos, three sunscreens, three boxes of supplements, or a mixed trio at a similar price point across departments. That is where the full third comes off.

Fine print worth knowing

The discount is computed on normal price, which is what the cart label says, so it is not stacked on top of another marked-down price. Guardian's terms note that participating brands and ranges only are included and that some brands or products are only available at selected stores, so an item you saw in one branch may not be in another.

No membership is required. We got the discount in a guest cart with no login, which is worth knowing because Guardian's other running mechanics, including Member Exclusive Offers and extra member points, do gate on a MYguardian account.

Online, delivery is free over RM100 and store pickup is offered. Our test carts also had a gift with purchase added automatically, a trial-size sachet set that changed depending on what was in the basket, described as while stocks last and available for standard delivery orders only. Treat it as a bonus, not a reason to order.

The offer ended on Sunday 7 September 2026. guardian's Beauty Days windows run about six days and are replaced immediately, so the mechanic changed rather than simply stopped, which is exactly what happened.

As of 8 September, guardian had not published a terms post for a successor Beauty Days window, so there is no published end date for the current markdowns.
