> Quick view, checked Wednesday 8 October 2026: Kota Kinabalu's paid attractions are cheap for Malaysians and only moderately dearer for foreigners, with one big exception. Mari Mari Cultural Village is a half-day package with lunch, so it costs more than everything else on this list combined for a Malaysian adult. And if you carry a Sabah MyKad, expect no extra discount anywhere: we did not find one.

Kota Kinabalu does not have a theme-park strip. Its paid sights are a state museum, a cultural village, a university aquarium, a quirky house out in Tamparuli and two Sabah Parks fees, one for the islands and one for Kinabalu Park. Prices are set by very different bodies (a state department, a private tour company, a university, Sabah Parks) and they publish them in very different places, so we went to each one's own page. Where an official page was down, we say so and give the last price it showed.

How to choose what to pay for in KK

Know which tier you are. Most places here use two prices, Malaysian and non-Malaysian. Bring a MyKad or MyKid; a foreign spouse or a permanent resident should ask at the counter rather than assume. Rumah Terbalik dropped its tiers altogether in August 2026.

Watch the child age bands. They are not the same everywhere. Mari Mari makes under-5s free, Rumah Terbalik counts children as 4 to 12, and Sabah Parks charges Malaysians aged 13 to 17 RM5 at the islands while letting 12 and under in free. Sabah Museum publishes no child rate at all.

Check the closing day before you drive. The UMS Aquarium closes on Mondays and public holidays and breaks for lunch from 1pm to 2pm. Mari Mari runs only two guided sessions a day, at 10am and 2pm.

Separate the fee from the trip. The Sabah Parks figures are conservation fees only. Boat fares to the islands and the jetty terminal charge at Jesselton Point are paid on top, and Kinabalu Park is about two hours' drive from the city.

A worked example

Two adults doing Sabah Museum, Mari Mari and a day at Tunku Abdul Rahman Park, conservation fee only:

  • Malaysian couple: 2 x (RM2 + RM110 + RM8) = RM240.
  • International couple: 2 x (RM15 + RM130 + RM25) = RM340.

Add the Rumah Terbalik combo at RM28 each and both couples pay the same extra RM56. Mari Mari is RM220 of the Malaysian couple's RM240, so the cultural village decides the budget, not the museum or the park.

How to pick

On a tight budget: Sabah Museum plus the UMS Aquarium covers a morning for RM12 a Malaysian adult, or RM35 for a foreigner. The museum's Islamic Civilisation gallery reopened on 17 September 2026, but its weekend Heritage Village cultural programme is suspended until further notice.

With young children: Rumah Terbalik (children under 3 free) and the aquarium are short visits that suit small kids. Mari Mari's under-5 rule makes it free for toddlers too.

For one big cultural day: Mari Mari, booked for the 10am or 2pm session. Hotel pick-up is extra, so ask for the transfer price when you book.

For nature: the islands for a beach day, or Kinabalu Park if you have a car and a full day. Our Sabah Parks entrance fees guide covers the other parks.

Before you go: check the opening day, carry your MyKad, and treat Lok Kawi's price as a guide until its official page is back.
