> Quick view: from 2 October to 1 November 2026, POPULAR gives 30% off regular-priced books and 40% off selected stationery to anyone who signs up for or renews the three-year POPULAR Privilege Card (RM25). The discount is good only on the day you sign up or renew, at POPULAR and HARRIS bookstores in Malaysia, for up to 10 books and 10 stationery items on one receipt.

This is the biggest straight book discount POPULAR has put on its own promotions page since the August sales. It is also easy to waste. The card is the entry ticket, the reward expires at closing time, and the most visible books in the store (the nett-priced displays near the door) do not count. Here is how to make it worth the RM25.

How it works, step by step

  1. Make your list first. The reward is valid only on the day you pay for the card, so browsing now and buying next week does not work. Note the titles you want and check they are not already on a nett or promotion display.
  2. Go to any POPULAR or HARRIS bookstore in Malaysia between 2 October and 1 November 2026. POPULAR's store locator lists 80 branches nationwide.
  3. Sign up for, or renew, the Privilege Card (3-year). POPULAR's card page prices it at RM25.00 for new members and renewals alike.
  4. Pay for your books and stationery on the same day. The poster says the discount applies to one unit per product, with a ceiling of 10 stationery items and 10 books in a single receipt. Put everything on one bill.

Worked examples

A new member buying four novels. Four regular-priced paperbacks at RM49.95 each come to RM199.80. Thirty per cent off saves RM59.94, so the books cost RM139.86. Add the RM25 card and you pay RM164.86, which is RM34.94 less than buying the same books without a card. You also walk out with three years of the standard member benefit of 10% off normal-price items.

The break-even point. RM25 divided by 30% is RM83.33. If your regular-priced books total less than about RM84, the card costs more than the discount saves on the day. Above that, every extra ringgit is a 30% saving.

The ceiling. Ten different books at RM49.95 is RM499.50, and 30% off that is RM149.85, the most a typical paperback haul can save on one receipt. Hardbacks and art books priced higher save more per copy. Buying two copies of one title does not work, because the cap is one unit per product.

An existing member. If you already hold a card, renewing is how you get in. On RM200 of regular-priced books, your usual 10% saves RM20. Renewing for RM25 and taking 30% saves RM60, so you come out RM15 ahead on the day and get the new three-year term on top. Ask the cashier how a renewal treats the time left on your current card before you pay, because the poster does not say.

What is excluded

The 30% book discount carries an asterisk: "Except Text, Assessment Books, nett-priced & promotion items." That rules out school workbooks and exam prep, which is where many families spend the most at this time of year.

It also rules out anything already on a deal. POPULAR's Good Reads, Great Value! campaign runs alongside this one until 11 October 2026, and its flyer is full of nett prices. *Girl in Pieces (Deluxe Edition)* is RM29.00 nett there, against a usual price of RM49.95. You would not get 30% on top, but the nett price is already lower than 30% off would be (RM34.97). *Ramen Makes Us Complete* is RM89.90 nett, or RM79.90 nett for members, against a usual price of RM99.95. Because it is a promotion item the 30% does not apply, so RM79.90 is the floor. POPULAR's October WOW! Special Deals stationery panel (Zebra Sarasa 3-pen pack RM9.90 nett, STABILO Swans 36+2 colour pencils RM12.90 nett, valid 1-31 October) is nett-priced too.

The 40% stationery discount is marked "For Selected items only", and neither the poster nor POPULAR's campaign page lists which items. Ask at the counter which shelves carry the tag before you fill a basket.

Who it is good for, and who should skip it

Good for: readers with a wish list of full-price fiction, non-fiction, Chinese or Malay titles; lapsed members whose card ran out; anyone planning a big gift or year-end reading haul in October.

Skip it if: you mainly need textbooks or assessment books (excluded), you only want one or two titles under RM80 in total, or your list is mostly nett-priced bestsellers. Students can still buy the RM12 two-year Student Card for the standing 10%, but that card does not unlock this promotion.

If you hold a Baucar Buku MADANI voucher, that programme runs separately through Kota Buku until 31 October. See our Baucar Buku MADANI guide for how it works. In Sabah, the Big Bad Wolf Books sale at SICC opens on 30 October if you would rather hunt for bargain stock.

Fine print that trips people up

  • Same day only. Sign up on a Saturday and come back on Sunday, and the discount is gone.
  • One receipt. The 10-book and 10-stationery caps apply per receipt, and everything must be on the same bill as the day's card purchase.
  • Privilege Card only. The 1-year POPULAR Card (RM12), the Student Card and the Teachers' Card are not named on the poster.
  • Malaysia only. The poster says the promotion applies at POPULAR/HARRIS bookstores in Malaysia, even though over 140 stores in Malaysia and Singapore accept the card.
  • Bookfairs are not mentioned. POPULAR is running fairs at Ampang Point (5-18 October) and 1Borneo Hypermall (2-14 October), but the poster names bookstores only. Past member offers have excluded bookfairs, so do not assume.
  • POPULAR can amend or cancel the promotion without notice, according to the poster.
