What the sale offers

Samsonite's campaign poster, posted by The Starling on 21 October, lists three layers:

  • Up to 50% off marked prices across the hall.
  • Buy 2: an additional 25% off.
  • Buy 3 and above: an additional 35% off.

An asterisk on the two bundle tiers says they exclude travel accessories. Both the Samsonite and American Tourister logos appear at the foot of the poster, so expect both brands on the floor. The mall's post adds only "T&C apply". Neither the poster nor the post prints individual hall prices, and the sale does not appear on Samsonite's promotion terms page, which still listed only its webstore campaigns when we checked on 22 October.

How it works, step by step

  1. Go to Level 5 of The Starling (Jalan SS21/37, Damansara Uptown, Petaling Jaya) and find Event Hall 1. The hall runs on mall hours, 10am to 10pm, on all five days.
  2. Pick your pieces. The marked price on each item already includes its share of the "up to 50%".
  3. Bring luggage, backpacks or bags to the counter together. Samsonite's own site files Luggage, Backpacks, Bags and Accessories as four separate categories, so a backpack should count as an item, while a lock, luggage tag, pouch or cover will not.
  4. The cashier applies 25% off for two items or 35% off for three or more. The poster does not say whether the extra applies to each item's already-reduced price. That is the usual reading, and our examples below assume it, but confirm on your first item before you queue with a full trolley.

Worked examples

Hall prices are not published, so these use today's Samsonite webstore tags as a stand-in. They show how the tiers compound, not a promise of what the hall will charge.

One cabin case. The NIAR Spinner 57/20 is RM1,399 list and RM699.50 on Samsonite's webstore on 22 October, already 50% off. A single item gets no extra discount at the hall, so at best you match the webstore. The Enwrap 55/20 (RM724.50) and Azio 55/20 (RM779.50) are also at 50% online today.

Two cases at 50% off. Two RM699.50 tags come to RM1,399. With the extra 25% you pay RM1,049.25, or about RM524.63 each. That is 62.5% off the list price.

A family set of three. Three RM699.50 tags total RM2,098.50. With 35% off you pay RM1,364.03, about RM454.68 each, or 67.5% off list. That is the real ceiling of "up to 50%" plus 35%.

Hall vs webstore on a big case. Samsonite's webstore runs a standing Mix and Match deal (buy 2, extra 15%; buy 3 and above, extra 25%), but only on the Modus, Octolite Neo and Zipprix FT 75/28. Three Modus 75/28 cases at the webstore's RM1,139.40 cost RM2,563.65 online after 25%. If the hall tags the same case at the same RM1,139.40, three cost RM2,221.83 after 35%, which is RM341.82 less, and the hall tier is not limited to three models.

Who it suits, and who should skip it

Go if you are kitting out a family before the December holidays, replacing two or three old cases at once, or pairing a check-in case with a cabin case and a work backpack. The extra 35% is the only part of this sale the webstore does not match, and three items is where it starts.

Skip it if you need just one case. Samsonite's webstore already has several 50%-off models, delivers to your door, and lets you compare sizes without a crowd. Skip it too if you were planning to buy mainly locks, covers and packing cubes, because accessories are carved out of the bundle discount.

Fine print that trips people up

  • Accessories do not count. Three items means three bags or cases. A RM99 luggage cover will not turn two cases into a 35% basket.
  • "Up to 50%" is a ceiling. Expect a spread of discounts. Newer ranges may sit well under 50%, so check each tag.
  • Webstore perks do not carry over. The Friends of Samsonite RM150 welcome voucher needs RM1,000 spent on regular-priced items, and the webstore's own promotions say they cannot be combined with other offers. Do not count on stacking them at the hall.
  • Five days only. It ends at 10pm on Monday 26 October. Popular sizes and colours tend to go over the first weekend, so a Thursday or Friday visit gives you the widest choice.

Getting there

The Starling is in Damansara Uptown (SS21), Petaling Jaya, and has its own parking (see the mall's site for directions and rates). Weekend afternoons are the busiest time for both the car park and the hall. Compare prices first on Samsonite Malaysia's webstore so you know what a fair tag looks like before you go.
