> Quick view: Shangri-La Tanjung Aru has opened new Questers Family Rooms, each with a small playhouse and slide for young children. Until 30 November 2026 the launch rate takes up to 20% off for a stay of three nights or more, with breakfast and the resort's kids' facilities included. We read the offer and its terms on shangri-la.com on 11 October 2026. It suits a family with one or two children under six. Families with older kids should price the alternatives first.

What the launch offer gives you

Shangri-La Tanjung Aru (everyone in KK calls it STAR) sits on the Tanjung Aru headland, a short drive from Kota Kinabalu International Airport. Questers is the group's family programme, and this property is now rolling out a themed room for it. The offer page lists the room as the Questers Family Tanjung Terrace Room, and the resort's own photo shows a terrace that looks over the water play area.

For a stay of at least three consecutive nights, the launch rate includes:

  • Daily breakfast at Café TATU for two adults and two children under six
  • Entry to the Water Play Area, with its giant tipping bucket and three slides
  • Entry to the Cool Zone Kids Club, which runs games, arts and crafts and other activities
  • Unrestricted high-speed Wi-Fi

Inside the room you get the Questers Playhouse (a play space with a slide, recommended for children under 1m tall), a box of loose-play toys subject to availability, and themed touches. Children who complete the resort's Quest receive a personalised Questers keepsake to take home.

How to book it, step by step

  1. Go to the offer page on shangri-la.com and switch the currency at the top from USD to MYR. The site defaults to US dollars.
  2. Pick check-in and check-out dates at least three nights apart, between now and 30 November. Your last possible check-in for a three-night stay is 27 November, which is also the last booking date.
  3. Set the guests to two adults and up to two children, then choose the Questers Family Room rate.
  4. If you prefer to book by phone or email, quote the code SCQRP&P. The resort's reservations line is (60) 88 325818 and its email is kotakinabalu@shangri-la.com.

Worked examples

A couple with a four-year-old and a two-year-old. Three nights at the "from" price is 3 x MYR 1,644 = MYR 4,932. The T&Cs say rates are subject to 10% service charge and 8% SST. If the page price excludes them, as Shangri-La's rates usually do, the bill comes to about MYR 5,820. That covers breakfast for all four, the water park and the kids club every day, so you are not paying extra for those.

Grandma comes along. A third adult costs MYR 180++ a night with an extra bed and breakfast. Over three nights that is MYR 540 before charges, or about MYR 637 after them.

Comparing with the resort's other family package. The Questers Family Adventure Package (stays until 30 November, two-night minimum) shows from MYR 2,480 a night in a sea-view room, so two nights cost about MYR 4,960 before charges. It adds lounge access, an island trip to Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park, a Mari Mari Cultural Village tour, a cooking class and one family dinner. For roughly the same money, the Questers room gets you an extra night and the in-room playhouse instead of the tours.

Comparing with the cheapest room rate. The Members Online Saver Rate with breakfast starts from MYR 1,088 a night, but it is prepaid, open only to Shangri-La Circle members, and is not the themed room. If your kids are older than the playhouse is built for, that rate is the better buy.

Who it suits, and who should skip it

Good for: families with toddlers and preschoolers who will actually use a playhouse and slide, and who plan to spend most of the trip at the resort. Families flying in from Peninsular Malaysia who want three or four easy days by the sea will get the most out of it.

Skip it if: your children are six or older, since the included breakfast stops at age six and the playhouse is sized for kids under 1m. Also skip it if you only have one or two nights, or if you plan to spend your days on island trips and Kundasang drives and will barely use the kids' facilities.

Fine print that trips people up

  • The "up to 20%" is a ceiling. The offers page says "stay longer" and enjoy up to 20% off. Expect the biggest saving on longer stays, and check your actual dates before you commit.
  • Breakfast age limit. Only two children under six eat free. Older kids pay Café TATU's breakfast price.
  • Not combinable. You cannot stack it with other promotions, and it does not apply to group bookings.
  • Package benefits do not carry over. Unused inclusions cannot be refunded or exchanged for cash or vouchers.
  • Tourism tax. Foreign passport holders pay MYR 10 nett per room per night at checkout. Malaysians and permanent residents are exempt.

All details on this page were read from the official offer page and its terms on shangri-la.com on 11 October 2026. Room rates move by date, so the MYR 1,644 figure is the lowest the page shows, not a guaranteed price for your nights.
