Child car seats have been compulsory in private cars since 1 January 2020, but most parents still are not sure who counts as a child, whether the front seat is allowed, or what the fine is. Registering a Birth in Malaysia 2026: Free for 60 Days, RM50 After, and Why Sabah and Sarawak Give You Only 14
Registering your baby's birth with JPN costs nothing if you do it in time, but "in time" means 60 days in Peninsular Malaysia and only 14 days in Sabah and Sarawak. Miss it and the fee is small (RM5 to RM50). The real cost is the paperwork: a late registration in the Peninsula asks for photos of the whole family and sponsors' declarations. Malaysia's Under-16 Social Media Rule, Three Months In: What the Child Protection Code Requires, and the Parent's Account It Allows
Since 1 June 2026, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube must check a Malaysian user's age against a MyKad, passport or birth certificate before letting them open an account, and anyone under 16 is refused. We read the Child Protection Code, MCMC's FAQ and the Online Safety Act 2025 itself. Existing accounts are being checked in phases over up to six months, which runs out at the end of November. WhatsApp and Telegram chats sit outside the Act. And MCMC's own under-16 page says a child may still use social media through a parent's account, while its FAQ calls exactly that a risk platforms must detect.
Malaysia School Holidays 2026 and 2027: What's Left This Year and the Full 2027 Calendar, by Group
Malaysian school holidays do not start on the same day nationwide. Under the Education Ministry's academic calendars, Group A covers only Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu, and everyone else, including Johor, is Group B. What is left of 2026 is one Deepavali day in November (Monday 9 November for Group A and Sarawak, Tuesday 10 November for the rest of Group B), then the year-end break: 4 to 31 December for Group A and 5 to 31 December for Group B. The ministry has now also published the 2027 calendar. Both groups reopen on Monday 4 January 2027, and this guide lists every 2027 break and festival allocation by group.
