What the hotel has announced

Ascott Gurney Penang posted the details on its own Facebook page on 25 September, along with a poster that carries the hotel's reservation lines. It's a one-night party rather than a regular buffet: dinner by the pool on Level 7, with a live band, a lucky draw, Halloween games with prizes, and a best-dressed contest with one male and one female winner. Every guest gets a welcome drink, and the hotel adds a complimentary cake for anyone celebrating a birthday or anniversary that night.

The price list is short:

  • Adult: RM168+
  • Senior citizen: RM98+
  • Child: RM88+
  • Children below 6: free
  • Free-flow beer and wine add-on: RM88+

The venue is the hotel's infinity pool deck, which looks out over the Gurney Drive waterfront to the sea. It's normally a residents' area, so this is a rare chance for non-guests to eat up there.

How to book, step by step

  1. Pick a deal before you message. The early bird and Buy 3 Get 1 Free can't be used together, so work out which one suits your group first (see the maths below).
  2. WhatsApp +6011 2349 3902, call 04-370 7000, or email reservation.penang@the-ascott.com. Give the number of adults, seniors, children and under-6s.
  3. Pay by Sunday 25 October if you want the 20% early bird. The poster says payment, not just a booking, has to be in by then.
  4. Mention any birthday or anniversary when you book so the complimentary cake is ready.
  5. Turn up in costume on the night if you want a shot at best dressed. The event runs 7pm to 10pm.

Worked examples

The "+" means service charge and tax are added on top. Hotel restaurants in Malaysia usually add a 10% service charge plus 6% service tax on food and drink, which takes RM168+ to about RM196. Treat our nett figures below as estimates and confirm the final amount when you pay.

A couple paying early. Two adults at the early-bird rate is RM268.80+, about RM313 nett. At full price it would be RM336+, about RM392, so paying by 25 October saves roughly RM78.

A couple who want a drink. Add free-flow beer and wine for both and the bill is RM444.80+, about RM519 nett. The poster doesn't say whether the add-on has to be bought for the whole table, so ask.

A family of four. Two early-bird adults, one child and one under-six come to RM356.80+, about RM416 nett. The under-six eats free.

Four friends. This is where Buy 3 Get 1 Free wins. Four adults pay for three: RM504+, about RM588. With the early bird instead, four adults cost RM537.60+, about RM627. Buy 3 Get 1 saves about RM39.

Five or six friends. With five adults, both deals land on exactly RM672+. With six, the early bird is cheaper (RM806.40+ against RM840+). Buy 3 Get 1 wins again at eight adults (RM1,008+ against RM1,075.20+). In short: groups of four or eight, use Buy 3 Get 1; any other number, pay early.

Bringing grandparents. The senior price of RM98+ (about RM114) is lower than even an early-bird adult seat, so book them as seniors.

Who it's good for, and who should skip it

Good for families who want a Halloween night out that isn't a haunted house, since the under-sixes are free and the activities are games and a costume contest rather than scares. It also suits friends looking for a dress-up Saturday on Gurney Drive, and anyone who wants an excuse to eat by that pool without booking a room.

Fine print that trips people up

  • The early bird is for adults only. Seniors and children pay the listed price whatever date you pay.
  • No stacking. Buy 3 Get 1 Free applies to adults only and can't be combined with the 20% early bird.
  • Payment, not booking, by 25 October. A WhatsApp enquiry on 24 October with payment on 26 October won't qualify.
  • Age bands aren't stated. The poster lists "child" and "senior citizen" without ages. Many hotels use 6 to 12 and 60 and above, but ask before you pay.
  • It's outdoors. October is one of Penang's wettest months. The hotel hasn't said what happens if it rains, so ask whether there's an indoor backup.
  • Refunds aren't mentioned. If you're prepaying for the early bird, check the cancellation terms first.
  • Gurney Drive on a Saturday night is busy. Leave extra time for traffic and ask the hotel about parking when you book.
