The three buffets at a glance

Deepavali falls on Sunday 8 November 2026, and Penang takes Monday 9 November off as the replacement holiday. That gives families a long weekend, and the hotel buffets are where many will book the festive meal.

  1. PARKROYAL Penang Resort, Batu Ferringhi. "Deepavali Feast of Flavours" at Cinnamon Asian Kitchen, 8 and 9 November, 6.30pm to 10.30pm. Adults RM188, with buy 1 adult buffet, get 1 free. Children aged 6 to 12 pay RM98, and children under 6 eat free. Prices include tax.
  2. Crowne Plaza Penang Straits City, Butterworth. "A Festival of Lights & Flavours" Deepavali lunch at 1887 Dining, Level 8, Sunday 8 November, 12pm to 3pm. RM128 nett normal price, RM98 nett for early bird bookings before 5 November, and RM88 nett if you dine in Indian festive attire.
  3. M Social Resort Penang, Tanjung Bungah. "The Deepavali Celebration Table" at Beast & Butterflies, Sunday 8 November, 12pm to 3pm. Adults RM108 nett, seniors (60 and over) and children aged 5 to 12 RM65 nett, children under 5 free.

What's on each spread

PARKROYAL has the biggest menu by far. Its five-page PDF runs from a carving station (roasted lamb leg, Kerala dry roast whole chicken, spice-rubbed barramundi) to clay-pot curries such as lamb varuval, prawn Malabari curry, murgh makhani and dal makhani. There is tandoori chicken and naan under the heat lamp, grilled lamb chops and paneer kebabs from the pit, plus live rojak mamak and ABC stations. A noodle station, chicken rice and satay cover the non-Indian eaters. Desserts include laddu, gulab jamun, jalebi, gajar halwa and murukku.

Crowne Plaza names seven chef's specials on its poster: chicken biryani with raisins, squid and squid eggs with turmeric, traditional chicken masala, soup kambing berempah, lamb kurma with potato, salted fish curry with tau pok, and kam heong prawns. The poster carries a halal logo.

M Social lists pani puri, chicken tikka and chicken murtabak, then tosai, poori, butter chicken, lamb curry and biryani, with rava kesari, carrot halwa and kheer for dessert. It is the shortest list and reads like an Indian-led lunch rather than a full international spread.

How to book

  • PARKROYAL: reserve through the hotel's TableCheck page for Cinnamon Asian Kitchen (linked from its offer page) or call +60 4 886 2288. The hotel recommends booking ahead.
  • Crowne Plaza: call 1887 Dining. The hotel's dining page gives +60 12 583 4823. Book before Thursday 5 November if you want the RM98 early bird.
  • M Social: reserve on TableCheck from the offer page, WhatsApp the resort, or call +604 6058 888.

Worked examples

A couple. PARKROYAL costs RM188 for two (RM94 a head). Crowne Plaza costs RM176 if you both dress up, RM196 booked early, or RM256 at the door. M Social costs RM216, or RM183.60 with a MyMillennium Classic card (15% off). Dressing up at Crowne Plaza is the cheapest option, and PARKROYAL is RM12 more for a dinner with a much longer menu.

Two adults and two children aged 8 and 10. PARKROYAL: RM188 + 2 x RM98 = RM384. M Social: RM216 + 2 x RM65 = RM346. Crowne Plaza has not published a child price, so call before you count on it.

Grandparents, parents and one child of 4. At M Social, two seniors at RM65 and two adults at RM108 come to RM346, and the 4-year-old eats free. At PARKROYAL the same group pays RM376 (two pairs of adults at RM188, as the page names no senior price), and a child under 6 eats free there too.

Four friends. PARKROYAL works out at RM376, assuming each pair counts as one buy 1 free 1. Crowne Plaza in festive wear is RM352. M Social is RM432.

Who each one suits

PARKROYAL suits couples and even-numbered groups of adults, families who want dinner rather than lunch, and anyone who wants the Monday holiday option. It is also the only one of the three where you can turn the meal into a beach night in Batu Ferringhi.

Crowne Plaza suits mainland families in Butterworth, Bukit Mertajam and Seberang Perai who don't want to queue for the bridge on a holiday Sunday. If the whole table wears kurta, saree or Punjabi suits, it is also the cheapest per adult.

M Social suits three-generation families and households with young children, because seniors and children aged 5 to 12 both pay RM65.

Skip PARKROYAL if you're dining alone or in an odd-numbered group of adults, because the free buffet needs a paying partner. Skip all three if you want a Deepavali dinner on Sunday close to George Town. Of the hotels that have published so far, only PARKROYAL serves dinner, and that's out in Batu Ferringhi.

Fine print that trips people up

  • No stacking. PARKROYAL's terms say the offer cannot be combined with other promotions, discounts, vouchers or privileges. Don't expect a bank card or Pan Pacific DISCOVERY discount on top of the buy 1 free 1.
  • "Festive attire" is the hotel's call. Crowne Plaza's poster says only "Dress in Indian Festive", and its Instagram post says "Indian festive attire". Ask when booking whether every diner must dress up, and whether the RM88 also applies to children.
  • PARKROYAL's child age band starts at 6, M Social's at 5. A 5-year-old eats free at PARKROYAL but pays RM65 at M Social.
  • Menus rotate. PARKROYAL says items may change without notice, so treat the PDF as a guide.
  • PARKROYAL's regular buffets are off. The resort's Friday and Saturday International & Seafood Galore buffet does not run on public holidays or their eves, so expect it to be off on Saturday 7 November. The Deepavali dinner is the resort's buffet on the 8th and 9th.
  • Other hotels haven't published. Shangri-La Rasa Sayang's Spice Market Café lists only its regular Sunday seafood buffet (RM228 adult, RM114 child), with no Deepavali menu. If you want a different hotel, ring them directly before assuming a festive spread.
