This piece is about a different, newer layer of the same town: a growing cluster of specialty-coffee cafés, brunch spots and dessert cafés that has built up around Pekan Cina, Simpang Kuala and the riverside pockets off the Kuala Kedah road over roughly the last decade.
None of these are national chains. They're independent, Kedah-owned operations — some running since the early 2010s, some opened in the last two to three years — each verified this run against its own official Facebook or Instagram business page, since that's how most small-town Malaysian cafés actually operate day to day rather than through a standalone website.

1. Caffè Diem
Founded by Jackie Loo and Rick Cheng in 2014, Caffè Diem is generally credited as the pioneering specialty-coffee café in Pekan Cina, Alor Setar's old Chinatown quarter, at 44 Jalan Penjara Lama. Its own Facebook page (12,000-plus likes, tens of thousands of check-ins) and website point to a menu built around single-origin coffee sourced from northern Malaysian estates, with signature drinks like the Kedah Paddy Field Latte and Cendol Affogato alongside its long-running lemon poppy seed cake. It's consistently one of the highest-rated cafés in town on independent review sites, which tracks with how long it's been operating without a rebrand.
2. Tiffz Coffee Gallery
Tiffz brands itself as a Latte Art Champion Cafe, and its Facebook page (over 13,000 likes) confirms the Alor Setar branch at 33-A Jalan PSK Satu, Pekan Simpang Kuala. Coffee is the clear centrepiece — Special Affogato, Rose Latte and Nutty Mocha show up repeatedly in its own posts — served alongside an Italian-leaning food menu of pasta, baked rice and its signature Upside-Down Pizza. The gallery-style interior is built for the espresso-and-photo crowd as much as for the coffee itself.
3. Sulb Cafe
Sulb (branded "SULB") is a halal-certified café-restaurant on the second floor of a Pekan Simpang Kuala shoplot, confirmed via its Instagram (@whatsulb) and Facebook business pages. The draw here leans more brunch-and-pizza than pure coffee: wood-fired pizzas including a Meat Lover and Beef Pepperoni, pasta such as Aglio e Olio with chicken, and a coffee-and-pastry counter that keeps it in café territory. It's Muslim-owned, under Bayu Delight Food & Beverage, and open daily from noon to 10pm per its own page.
4. Mansion 28 Cafe
Mansion 28 occupies a restored 1950s-era building at No. 28 Jalan Station, confirmed through its Facebook page @Mansion28cafe. The mansion's original facade and window patterns are kept intact around a Western-leaning brunch and dessert menu — its Ondeh-Ondeh Gula Melaka cake is the most consistently mentioned signature item, alongside a Hot Matcha Latte and an Aburi Salmon Rice Bowl for those wanting something beyond dessert. It's open daily from 10am to 10pm and also takes custom cake orders.
5. Blackwood Coffee & Chocolate — Alor Setar
Blackwood started in Sungai Petani in 2012 under founder Low Kok Yu and has since expanded into Perlis, Penang and Alor Setar; its Alor Setar branch sits at S9-S11, Lot 92, Jalan Istana Kuning, listed on the brand's own official store page at blackwood.my. As the name suggests, chocolate-driven drinks and desserts sit alongside its coffee menu — Nutella banana pancake and toffee nut mocha are among the items customers most often reference — making it the closest thing on this list to a proper dessert café rather than a coffee-first spot.
6. Blind Date Book Cafe
Billed on its own Facebook and Instagram (@blinddatecafe) pages as the first Muslim-owned book café in Alor Setar, Blind Date sits at No. 42, Jalan Utama 3, Sultanah Sambungan, inside the Kompleks Perniagaan Utama. Shelves of books line a cosy, plug-point-heavy space built for lingering, with a menu that runs from caramel lattes to heartier items like lamb soup and buttermilk chicken rice — a genuine café-meets-reading-room concept rather than a pure coffee bar. Its own page has referenced a Saturday breakfast buffet at RM10 per person, though pricing on a rotating buffet is worth confirming on the day since it isn't listed as a standing, dated promo.
7. Kopi & Roti
A minimalist, pastel-toned café at No. 6, Kompleks Perniagaan Utama, Jalan Sultanah Sambungan, confirmed via its Facebook page @kopidanroti (over 10,000 likes). True to its name, the focus is straightforward gourmet coffee — espresso and drip coffee, lattes — paired with simple pastries, iced matcha and fruit juices, in a smaller, quieter format than the brunch-heavy cafés elsewhere on this list. It runs a Sunday-to-Saturday schedule with Friday closed, per its own page.
8. 31 Teguk
The newest and most distinctly Instagram-driven entry, 31 Teguk sits directly on the riverbank near Taman Sri Derga, off Jalan Datuk Kumbar (05300 Alor Setar), verified through its Facebook and Instagram (@31.teguk) pages. Its signature is a matcha-and-buttercream coffee hybrid alongside strawberry matcha and flavoured soda drinks, and the riverside seating — rather than the coffee itself — is the main reason it comes up repeatedly in local social-media round-ups of Alor Setar cafés. Open daily except Monday, from noon to 11pm, per its own listing.
What We Left Out
We checked but dropped Lakeside Cafe (near Keat Hwa) and Present Cafe — neither had a findable, currently-active official Facebook or Instagram business page we could verify this run, so we couldn't confirm current operating status against the site's accuracy standard.
