The three meals and what each person pays

  • Thu 24 Dec, "Jolly Jubilee" Christmas Eve buffet dinner, 6pm-10pm: adult RM198 early bird or RM248 standard, senior RM168, child RM138
  • Fri 25 Dec, "Bright Tidings" Christmas Day buffet lunch, noon-3pm: adult RM148 early bird or RM188 standard, senior RM138, child RM98
  • Thu 31 Dec, "Glow in Gold" New Year's Eve buffet dinner, 6pm-10pm: adult RM198 early bird or RM248 standard, senior RM168, child RM128

On these festive menus a child is aged 6 to 11 and a senior is 60 and above. The NYE page promises "international delights and local favourites" but none of the three listings name a single dish, so ask on WhatsApp if you want a menu before you pay.

How to get the early bird, step by step

  1. Pick your date and headcount. Reservations must be made at least 3 days ahead, so the absolute last booking for Christmas Eve is around 21 December, but the cheaper rate is gone after 6 December.
  2. Book through the hotel's WhatsApp line, +6012 956 1030, or the reservation button on the festive page.
  3. Pay the full amount by 6 December. The page says full payment, not a deposit. Treat it as non-refundable unless the hotel tells you otherwise in writing, because no refund or date-change policy is printed.

Worked costs

  • Couple, Christmas Eve: RM396 early bird against RM496 standard. You save RM100.
  • Two adults and two children aged 6 to 11, Christmas Eve: RM396 + RM276 = RM672 early bird, RM772 standard. The saving is still RM100, because only the adults are discounted.
  • Couple, Christmas Day lunch: RM296 early bird, RM376 standard.
  • Family of four, New Year's Eve: RM396 + RM256 = RM652 early bird.
  • Couple doing both Christmas Eve and NYE: RM792 early bird, RM992 standard. Paying early saves RM200 here, the biggest gap in the set.

Is RM198 a good price?

Compare it with the hotel's own regular dinner. Amaya's Smokey Seafood Special runs every Friday and Saturday, 6.30pm-10pm, at RM188 an adult with Buy 3 Free 1, on the dining offers page through 31 December. So the Christmas Eve early bird costs only RM10 an adult more than a normal seafood night. For a group of four adults, though, a regular Friday works out to RM564 (RM141 each) against RM792 for Christmas Eve, because the festive page offers no group deal.

Across the island, Hard Rock Hotel Penang charges RM220 an adult for its Christmas Eve and NYE buffets on an early bird that runs to 15 December (our breakdown). Amari is RM22 cheaper but wants your money nine days sooner. Amari is the practical choice if you live on the Bayan Lepas side or near the airport; Batu Ferringhi traffic on festive nights is slow.

The 60th anniversary spend rewards: check before you count on them

From 7 November to 31 December, Amari SPICE Penang runs "Celebrating Six Decades of Flavours". Each receipt earns a reward: a free dessert or drink from RM195, a RM20 dining voucher from RM391, RM59 from RM587, RM112 from RM783 and RM195 from RM979 (RM1,305 adds 3,000 ONYX Rewards points). Four adults on the Christmas Eve early bird come to RM792, which would clear the RM783 tier.

However, the terms say the offers are "not combinable unless otherwise stated", and the festive page does not say either way. Ask whether the festive buffets count before you assume the voucher. Vouchers are valid only at the outlet that issued them (Amaya or Cascade) and only until 31 December, and receipts cannot be combined.

Who it suits, and who should skip it

It suits families on the mainland side of the bridge or around Bayan Lepas, since the hotel says it is about 5 km from Penang International Airport and close to both bridges. It also suits couples who want a Christmas Eve dinner without paying resort prices.

Skip the NYE buffet if you want to be at the table when the clock strikes twelve. It ends at 10pm. Skip it, too, if you need halal certification confirmed: the festive page makes no halal claim and the hotel sells wine, so ask directly.

Fine print that trips people up

  • Child age is different on different pages. The festive buffets charge children aged 6 to 11; a 12-year-old pays the full adult rate. The regular dining offers use 6 to 12.
  • The weekday lunch buffet's days do not match. The Workday Indulge Buffet (RM118 adult) is described as Monday to Friday, but its own terms say Monday to Thursday. Call before you plan a Friday lunch.
  • Seafood nights need 5 days' notice, more than the festive buffets' 3 days.

Other offers running at the same time

Through 31 December, the dining offers page also lists the Amari Signature Hi-Tea at RM98 nett for two (Cascade, daily 2pm-6pm, TWG tea), a Sedulang Sekawan Malay set for two at RM88, and a 60th anniversary main course with dessert for RM60.
