> Quick view: GAMA Supermarket & Departmental Store — officially Malaysia's oldest supermarket-cum-department store, per the Malaysia Book of Records — is running a 60th Anniversary giveaway: spend RM200 and above and get a free Limited Edition GAMA 60th Anniversary Eco Bag, while stocks last. GAMA's own poster dates the campaign "August 2026 – July 2027" and gives no start or end day.
The offer, exactly as GAMA prints it
The campaign artwork is the primary source here, and it is short:
- SPEND RM200 & ABOVE — receive an exclusive 60th Anniversary Limited Edition bag
- EFFECTIVE: AUGUST 2026 – JULY 2027
- Terms & Conditions Apply
- At Wisma GAMA, No. 1 Jalan Dato Keramat, George Town, Penang
That is the entire published mechanic. The bag itself is printed with an illustration of the GAMA building under fireworks, framed by George Town shophouses, a clock tower and a temple roofline — a Penang scene rather than a plain logo tote. The poster badges it as eco-friendly material, a sustainable choice, stylish and practical, and a limited edition collectible.
Everything beyond that — the exact first and last day, and the phrase "single receipt" — comes from one deals aggregator rather than from GAMA. That distinction changes how you shop, so we set it out plainly.
What GAMA publishes, and what was added later
We originally reported the single-receipt rule and a 1 July 2027 end date as confirmed. Re-checked against GAMA's own artwork on 1 September 2026, neither is printed there — so this update downgrades both from "confirmed" to "assume, then verify at the counter".
How to actually get the bag
Consolidate. GAMA is a full department store over eight levels, not a supermarket alone: basement parking, groceries on the ground floor, apparel and accessories on floors 1 to 4, home appliances on floors 5 and 6, and a food court on floor 7. The practical move is to put the groceries, the school uniform and the kettle through one till on one visit rather than spreading them over separate trips.
One caveat the poster does not cover: Wisma GAMA also houses independent tenants with their own tills — Four Leaves Bakery & Restaurant on the ground floor, the GAMA Food Court, Ali Bubur Gama Corner and a photo-and-print shop among them. Those are separate businesses, so do not assume a bakery or food-court bill counts toward GAMA's own RM200.
Worked examples:
- RM185 grocery run — RM15 short. Add a household item at the same till rather than making a second trip.
- RM210 mixed basket (groceries plus a clothing item, both on GAMA's own till) — should qualify on one bill.
- RM120 + RM120 on two visits — RM240 in total, but two bills, so on the normal reading neither qualifies.
- RM160 of groceries + RM45 at the food court — RM205 in total, but the food-court bill belongs to a different business. Do not count on it.
Check the monthly promotion before you build a RM200 basket
The eco bag is a keepsake, not a discount. GAMA's Facebook page — around 43,000 followers, posting regularly — separately runs a monthly supermarket promotion cycle plus rotating in-store brand fairs; past examples include a Pierre Cardin lingerie fair and combo pricing on luggage. If you are deliberately spending RM200 to earn a tote, the month's actual price cuts are where the money is. The bag is a bonus on top, not the reason.
Who it suits — and who should skip it
Worth planning around if you already shop the Magazine Circus end of town, live in George Town, or do a monthly bulk run where RM200 is a normal basket size.
Skip it if you would be padding a basket with things you do not need to reach RM200. A reusable tote is not worth RM60 of filler. Same if you would be crossing the island specially — the bag does not justify the trip on its own, though the store's own monthly promotion might.
What is still unpublished
- Bags per shopper — no cap was printed. Ask at the counter.
- Which departments count — the poster does not say whether the RM200 must be groceries or can span the whole store. Ask before you shop.
- Stock — no quantity was ever stated. "While stocks last" across an eleven-month window is a real risk, so go early rather than late.
- The closing day — GAMA published a month, not a date. Treat the start of July 2027 as the safe assumption and do not bank on the full month.
- Online — GAMA's shop at shop.gama.com.my refuses connections from outside Malaysia (checked 1 September 2026 from two separate networks), so we could not read it. Google still indexes its Home and Promotions pages under working titles, and GAMA's Facebook page still lists it as the store website — so treat the earlier "down for maintenance" note in this article as withdrawn. Plan on shopping in person either way.
60 years, and where the number comes from
The count does not start at the Jalan Dato Keramat building. GAMA began in 1967 as the Pulau Pinang Supermarket, trading inside the Chowrasta Market building, founded by Kedah-born Chang Cheng Guan after a 1964 trip to Singapore. The move to Wisma GAMA and the rename came later — the Dato Keramat store opened for business on 8 December 1980. So the 60 years runs from Chowrasta, which is also why a campaign launched in 2026 runs into 2027: 1967 plus 60 lands in 2027.
On 22 May 2022 GAMA entered the Malaysia Book of Records as the country's oldest supermarket and departmental store, presented by MBR chief operating officer Christopher Wong Hong Wai. CEO Ng Yee Mai noted that the store "pioneered the concept of a supermarket cum departmental store way back in 1967". That is a national record, not a Penang one — the earlier wording in this article undersold it.

Where to check for updates
Use Facebook, not Instagram. GAMA's Facebook page has around 43,000 followers and posts regularly. The Instagram account shows 324 followers and no visible posts — it is effectively dormant, so it will not tell you when the bags run out.
