What the numbers actually say

The name says food, but the best value is in the household aisle. Dettol and Breeze are the only two items cut by more than a third, and Breeze alone saves RM10.91, more than any other item on the list. At the other end, the Super milk tea is 81 sen off a RM14.30 bag, which is not worth a special trip.

If you buy one of everything, the 12 items cost RM197.21 against RM243.59 at normal prices. That is RM46.38 saved, or about 19% across the basket.

Worked examples

  • The monthly staples run: rice, Breeze, KCA tissue and Dettol come to RM79.97 instead of RM108.29. You save RM28.32 on four things most households buy anyway.
  • The breakfast shelf: OLDTOWN twinpack, Weet-Bix and NeoSoft spread come to RM69.48 instead of RM79.20, a RM9.72 saving. The coffee works out to about RM1.20 a stick.
  • The eco bag question: GAMA's separate 60th anniversary giveaway hands out a limited edition eco bag for RM200 and above spent, while stocks last. The full Food Fiesta list stops RM2.79 short, so you need a little more of your normal shopping on the same visit. Ask at the counter whether that bag is still in stock before you plan around it.

Who should go, and who can skip it

Worth it if you live or work around Komtar, Macalister Road or Jelutong and already shop at GAMA. The rice, detergent and tissue savings add up on a regular restock, and the week-long window gives you room to pick a quieter weekday.

Skip it if you would be crossing the bridge from Seberang Perai for one or two items. Most single cuts are worth RM1 to RM3, which the bridge toll and parking quickly eat up. The trip only pays if you are restocking several of the bigger items at once.

Fine print that trips people up

  • In-store only. Every poster says "Available at Gama Supermarket only". GAMA's online shop is not part of this.
  • While stocks last. Stock is not guaranteed for the whole week, so go earlier if you have your eye on the rice or detergent.
  • Check the flavour tag. The Red Chef card names Pandan Curry and Sakura Prawn Noodle, but the packs in the photo are Penang Prawn Mee and Penang White Curry Mee. Confirm on the shelf label which flavours are at RM7.59.
  • "Assorted" means the shelf decides. Dettol, Breeze and Lactel are listed as assorted, so the scent or flavour you want may not be there.
  • Holiday hours. GAMA has not posted special hours for Malaysia Day, so check its Facebook page before heading out on 16 September.

GAMA is at Wisma GAMA, No. 1 Jalan Dato Keramat, 10150 George Town, on Magazine Circus a short walk from Komtar. There is basement parking, and Rapid Penang buses run along Jalan Dato Keramat. Groceries are on the Ground Floor, which is where the fiesta is. For updates, follow GAMA on Facebook.
