IKEA Kuching Opens 27 Nov: Peninsular Prices, and When Waiting Beats Paying for Delivery

East Malaysia's first IKEA opens at The Pines Mall on 27 November with around 5,000 items at Peninsular prices. Opening offers are still unannounced, but delivery fees alone make waiting worthwhile for some orders. Here is the maths.

> Quick view: IKEA Kuching opens on 27 November 2026 at The Pines Mall, Jalan Batu Kawa, with around 5,000 articles at Peninsular prices. No opening discount has been published yet. The saving you can already count is delivery: a tall BILLY bookcase costs RM73.14 or more to deliver, and nothing extra if you can take one home from the store.

Sarawak shoppers have been able to buy from IKEA's East Malaysia Online Store since February 2025, but until now there has been nowhere to see a sofa before paying for it. IKEA's Kuching page greets the city with "Hej Kuching, dah mok sampei!" and confirms the date and address. IKEA first said December, then brought the date forward in a media release on 28 October, so older reports you may find are out of date.

What IKEA has confirmed

  • First of its kind: the first IKEA in East Malaysia, and the first small-format IKEA in Malaysia. It will be smaller than Damansara, Cheras, Tebrau and Batu Kawan.
  • Range: around 5,000 home furnishing articles.
  • Prices: the same as Peninsular Malaysia, according to the store page.
  • Food: grab-and-go meatballs, curry puffs, hot dogs and soft-serve, plus Swedish food products to take home, according to SAYS' report of the media release. Do not plan on a full Swedish Restaurant meal.
  • Familiar names: the same report mentions BILLY, KALLAX, POÄNG and SKOGSTA.

What is still not published

As of 4 November, IKEA has not listed opening hours, the opening weekend programme, or any IKEA Family offer for Kuching. We would not buy on the assumption of a discount, and we would not rule one out either. IKEA Family is free to join, so sign up before you go in case member offers do appear.

The offers on IKEA's site right now will not help. The BESTÅ gift card ends on 10 November and excludes the East Malaysia online store. The in-store Spend & Win ends on 13 November, two weeks before Kuching opens. Kids eat free on Fridays at the Swedish Restaurant from 6 November to 18 December, but IKEA has not said this reaches Kuching's grab-and-go counter.

What delivery costs today

IKEA's delivery page says its rates apply across West and East Malaysia. All of them are before 6% SST, so we have added it below.

  • Small parcel, up to 3kg: RM9, or RM9.54 with SST
  • Regular parcel, 3kg to 25kg: RM19, or RM20.14 with SST
  • Truck, Zone A: RM69, or RM73.14 with SST
  • Truck, Zone B: RM99, or RM104.94 with SST
  • Truck, Zone C: RM149, or RM157.94 with SST
  • Collection Point: from RM29

Parcels are capped at 25kg, 84 litres and an item length of 1.8 metres. Your zone depends on your postcode, so check it at checkout. Truck delivery to a third to fifth floor with no lift adds a flat RM98, and assembly is 10% of the product price.

Worked examples

Prices were read on IKEA Malaysia's site on 4 November. They can vary by colour, and the Kuching store may not stock every size to carry home.

  • BILLY bookcase, 80x28x202 cm, RM269. At 202cm it is over the 1.8 metre parcel limit, so we would expect truck delivery. That makes RM342.14 in Zone A and RM426.94 in Zone C. The saving from taking it home is RM73.14 to RM157.94, as long as your car can fit it.
  • RÅSKOG trolley, RM99. If it ships as a regular parcel, it comes to RM119.14. Waiting saves RM20.14, which may not be worth a trip to Batu Kawa unless you are going anyway.
  • SKOGSTA dining table, 235x100 cm, RM1,699. With Zone A truck delivery and IKEA's assembly at RM169.90, it comes to RM1,942.04 before any SST on assembly. You probably need delivery either way, so the real benefit of the store is seeing the table before you pay.

The truck fee is flat for the first 150 items, so one large delivery beats several small ones. If you are furnishing a whole room, wait and order it together.

Who should wait, and who should not

Wait if you want to try a sofa, mattress or table in person, or if you are buying one bulky flat-pack you can carry home. Waiting also makes sense if your order is not urgent. The delivery page allows up to 10 days for truck delivery within Kuching and warns of 1 to 2 extra weeks because of port congestion. The online store's own FAQ quotes 2 to 5 days, so the two pages disagree. On the longer estimate, an order placed today could arrive on 28 November, the day after the store opens.

Do not wait if you need something this month and the fee is small. A RM19 parcel is cheap compared with a return trip across town.

Outside Kuching, little changes for now. The East Malaysia Online Store quotes up to 2 weeks for Sibu, Miri, Bintulu and Kota Kinabalu. Miri also has a Saturday mobile Collection Point at the Emart Miri parking lot, which Brunei shoppers can use too.

Fine print that trips people up

Not everything comes home with you. Selected furniture and accessories can be taken away immediately. The wider range is ordered for collection or home delivery. Check before you plan around one specific item.

The online range is unclear. The East Malaysia store page says more than 4,000 products near the top and "up to 2,000" in its FAQ, which also still says there is no physical store. Trust the stock status on each product page, after setting your store to East Malaysia Online Store.

Kuching's in-store delivery rates are not out. IKEA publishes store delivery zone files for the Klang Valley, Tebrau and Batu Kawan, but we found none for Kuching on 4 November. Do not assume the online fee will be the fee at the counter.

Collection Point orders have a deadline. Orders are held for 5 days from the collection notice. After that they are cancelled, and the Click & Collect fee is not refunded.

We will update this article when IKEA publishes the opening weekend details.
