A MyKad Category A concession lands on the same RM19.60 by a different route. ERL's own homepage still advertises the dead Merdeka fare.

For three days at the end of August, a return trip from KL Sentral to Putrajaya on KLIA Transit cost RM14.00. That was Merdeka RTN, ERL's 50%-off fare for the National Day parade, and it died with its travel window on 31 August 2026.

This article started life as a guide to that fare. It is now a guide to what replaced it, because the question people actually type in September is not "was the Merdeka deal good" but "what does the train to Putrajaya cost me this week, and is there a cheaper way to buy it". We re-priced every sector on ERL's own booking engine on 9 September 2026, for a 16 September 2026 same-day return, and re-read all nine live offers on ERL's offers page.

What a Putrajaya return costs today

Setting KL Sentral to Putrajaya & Cyberjaya, one adult, out and back on 16 September, the engine returns exactly two products and nothing else:

  • CIMB Visa Debit RTN — RM19.60, tagged Lowest Fare, against a normal fare of RM28.00.
  • Standard Return Trip — RM25.20, tagged Great Value Buy, which is simply the standing 10% discount for buying online rather than at the gate.

There is no third rung. No Merdeka fare, and no Malaysia Day fare either, which we checked deliberately by pricing 16 September itself.

The same two-rung ladder holds on every Putrajaya sector, and the gaps widen with distance:

Board at Bandar Tasik Selatan instead and the return is RM11.20 with CIMB against RM14.40 online and RM16.00 normal. From Salak Tinggi it is RM6.60, RM8.50 and RM9.40. A family of two adults and two children aged 6 to 15 from KL Sentral comes to RM56.80 with CIMB, RM73.00 online and RM81.20 normal.

The four ways to pay less, ranked

ERL runs nine offers. Only four of them touch a Putrajaya journey at all, and they do not stack — Bank Islam's terms say so outright, and the booking engine only ever offers you one discounted product at a time.

1. CIMB Visa Debit, 30% off. The best deal for most people. Codes CIMB30S (single) and CIMB30R (return) on the website and app, or just tap the card at the gate. It covers single *and* return fares, both KLIA Ekspres and KLIA Transit, and all six stations: KL Sentral, Bandar Tasik Selatan, Putrajaya & Cyberjaya, Salak Tinggi, KLIA T1 and KLIA T2. ERL's own page puts the promo period at 3 March 2025 to 31 December 2026. The card must be a CIMB Visa Debit card issued in Malaysia. This is the offer running across ERL's homepage hero right now.

2. MyKad Category A concession, 30% off one-way fares. The same 30%, no bank required. Category A covers Malaysians only: senior citizens aged 60 and above, registered disabled persons, secondary school students aged 16 and above, and students in higher learning institutes. The discount is one-way fare less 30%, all sectors, so a KL Sentral to Putrajaya trip is RM9.80 each way — RM19.60 for a return bought as two singles, which is the identical number the CIMB code produces. Two very different routes to the same fare. The catch is setup: you must register online and bring your MyKad to a counter to activate it, and ERL has not sold concession fares over the counter since 1 May 2021. A plain Touch 'n Go card will not do it; it has to be a MyKad with the Touch 'n Go function.

3. Standard Return Trip online, 10% off. The default if you have neither. RM25.20 from KL Sentral. It requires nothing but buying on kliaekspres.com or in the app instead of tapping in at the gate, and the ticket we priced was valid from 16 September to 16 October — a month of flexibility, though the 90-minute entry-to-exit rule still applies once you tap in.

4. Bank Islam Card-i, 20% off at the gate. Useful only if you cannot plan ahead. Tap a Bank Islam Credit Card-i or Debit Card-i at the contactless reader and 20% comes off the Standard Single Adult fare, so a KL Sentral to Putrajaya one-way is RM11.20 and two singles are RM22.40 — worse than CIMB or the concession, better than paying RM28.00. The discount is deducted at the point of exit, applies to both KLIA Ekspres and KLIA Transit, and explicitly does not work through the website, the kiosk, the counter, or a digital wallet. Note that ERL's offers index dates this promotion 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2026 while the offer page's own terms say 1 January 2025; both agree it ends 31 December 2026.

What does not help you, despite appearances

The Visa 25% and Maybank 20% offers are KLIA Ekspres only. Both are aimed at arriving tourists and both are restricted to cards issued *outside* Malaysia. The Visa deal (codes VISA25S and VISA25R, 15 August 2026 to 30 April 2027) lists its eligible stations as KL Sentral, KLIA T1 and KLIA T2 — Putrajaya is not among them. If you are a Malaysian commuter, neither of these is for you.

Group Saver and Family Package do not serve Putrajaya. Both are live, with a sales period of 2 July to 30 September 2026, and both look like obvious family savings — but they only cover the KL Sentral to KLIA and Bandar Tasik Selatan to KLIA sectors. Group Saver is RM40 per person one-way on KLIA Ekspres from KL Sentral, or RM32 per person on KLIA Transit from Bandar Tasik Selatan, minimum three adults. Family Package is RM120 one-way for two adults and two children from KL Sentral, or RM91 from Bandar Tasik Selatan. Neither prices a Putrajaya trip at all. For a family going to Putrajaya, the CIMB route at RM56.80 return is the whole of the offer.

The Merdeka fare is still on ERL's own website. As of 9 September 2026 the offer page is live, the offers index still lists it, and it is still rotating through the homepage carousel. The card carries its real promo period, 26 to 31 August 2026, but the artwork does not, and the booking engine will not sell you the fare on any September date. Read the promo period line, not the picture.

Board at Bandar Tasik Selatan and save RM8.40

The cheapest legitimate move is still the one the Merdeka article made: change where you get on. A CIMB return from KL Sentral is RM19.60. The same ticket from Bandar Tasik Selatan is RM11.20 — RM8.40 less, and the journey is shorter, 12 minutes on the timetable against 19.

Bandar Tasik Selatan is an interchange served by the LRT Sri Petaling line and KTM Komuter as well as KLIA Transit. For anyone in Cheras, Sungai Besi, Serdang or Seri Kembangan, getting there costs a couple of ringgit and it is on your way regardless. The saving is larger than any card discount available on the KL Sentral sector.

The timetable, which has not changed

KLIA Transit's first southbound train leaves KL Sentral at 05:03 and reaches Putrajaya & Cyberjaya at 05:22, calling at Bandar Tasik Selatan at 05:10. Going home, the last northbound service leaves Putrajaya & Cyberjaya at 00:50, reaching Bandar Tasik Selatan at 01:01 and KL Sentral at 01:09. Trains run every 15 minutes during weekday peak hours and every 30 minutes off-peak and at weekends. Putrajaya & Cyberjaya station is at Putrajaya Sentral in Presint 7, which is not walking distance to the government precincts — budget for a bus or a ride-hail at the far end.

Who should buy what

A CIMB Visa Debit holder: use the card, every time, for the rest of 2026. RM19.60 return from KL Sentral, RM11.20 from Bandar Tasik Selatan, and it works at the gate as well as online, so you do not have to decide in advance.

A Malaysian aged 60 and above, a registered disabled person, or a student: register the MyKad concession once and stop thinking about promotions. It is the same 30%, it never expires with a campaign, and it applies to single fares on every sector.

Everybody else: buy online rather than tapping in, and accept RM25.20. The RM2.80 you save against the gate fare is the entire discount available to you, and the ticket stays valid for a month.

A family of four going to Putrajaya: RM56.80 return with CIMB is the floor. Do not go looking for the Family Package — it does not cover this route.

Anyone waiting for the next Merdeka-style fare: ERL has published nothing for Malaysia Day, and we confirmed that by pricing 16 September itself. When something appears, it will appear on the offers page at kliaekspres.com/offers, and it will carry a promo period line. Check that line before you get excited.

What the Merdeka fare actually was, for the record

Merdeka RTN ran from 26 to 31 August 2026 for travel on 29, 30 or 31 August 2026 only, at 50% off KLIA Transit return fares on the three sectors touching Putrajaya & Cyberjaya. KL Sentral was RM14.00 return, Bandar Tasik Selatan RM8.00, Salak Tinggi RM4.70, and two adults with two children RM40.60. It was online and app only, no promo code, and both legs had to be used on the single travel date selected. It was non-refundable, non-transferable and non-exchangeable, with no weather clause.

Measured honestly, it beat today's best fare by RM5.60 on a KL Sentral return — RM14.00 against RM19.60. Measured against the price a normal online buyer would otherwise have paid that week, RM25.20, it saved RM11.20 rather than the RM14 the "50% off" headline implied. That gap between the headline discount and the real one is the thing to carry into the next campaign ERL runs: the booking engine always has a standing discount sitting underneath the promotional one.
