KL International Airport sits about 45km south of the city, and it is really two terminals: KLIA Terminal 1 (full-service carriers) and KLIA Terminal 2, the old klia2, where AirAsia and most low-cost flights land. Both sit on the same rail line and the same bus routes, three minutes apart by train.

That distance explains every option below. You are always trading ringgit against time on the ELITE highway — and, as it turns out, against whether you know about the discounts most arrivals never use.

The fastest: KLIA Ekspres

Non-stop to KL Sentral in 28 minutes from Terminal 1, plus 3 minutes if you are starting at Terminal 2. No intermediate stops, no traffic, no negotiating.

Trains run every 20 minutes, all day, every day — weekends and public holidays included. First departure from KL Sentral is 05:00 and the last is 00:00; from Terminal 1 the first is 05:00 and the last is 00:05, and from Terminal 2 the first is 04:55. From 11:00pm onwards, KLIA Ekspres trains stop at all stations, and the service is extended until 1:00am from the airport.

Fares from KL Sentral to KLIA T1 or T2:

  • Adult single RM55, return RM100
  • Child aged 6–15: RM25 single, RM45 return
  • Under 6 travel free, up to three free child tickets per adult ticket

Your ticket is valid for 90 minutes from the moment you tap in, and a one-way ticket is interchangeable between T1 and T2 — so if your flight moves terminals, the ticket still works.

It is the most expensive per person and the only option genuinely immune to traffic. If you have a flight to catch, this is the one that will not let you down.

How to pay less than RM55

Almost nobody at the counter is paying the headline fare, and the discounts are stackable with nothing but a bit of planning:

  • Buy online — 10% off. Tickets bought through the KLIA Ekspres website or app are 10% cheaper than at the counter, and stay valid for one month from your selected travel date.
  • CIMB Visa Debit — 30% off. Applies to single and return fares on both KLIA Ekspres and KLIA Transit, from or to any station. Tap the card at the gate, or use promo code CIMB30S (single) / CIMB30R (return) online. Running until 31 December 2026, capped at RM50,000 of discounts overall.
  • Foreign-issued Visa card — 25% off KLIA Ekspres. Tap a Visa debit, credit or prepaid card issued *outside* Malaysia at the gate, or use VISA25S / VISA25R online. Valid 15 August 2026 to 30 April 2027. Malaysian-issued Visa cards do not qualify.
  • Bank Islam Card-i — 20% off contactless at the KLIA Transit gate.
  • MyKad concession — 30% off all KLIA Transit sectors for Malaysian senior citizens aged 60 and above, registered disabled persons, secondary students aged 16+ and higher-education students. You register online, activate the MyKad at a counter once, then just tap. Airline crew, airport staff and licensed tourist guides get a flat RM35 one-way KL Sentral–KLIA.
  • Family Package — from RM120 one-way for 2 adults and 2 children, about 25% off buying the tickets separately.
  • Group Saver — RM40 per person one-way when three or more of you travel together. That is cheaper per head than a shared Grab.
  • KL TravelPass bundles a single or return KLIA Ekspres trip with 2 days of unlimited RapidKL rail and bus (LRT, MRT, Monorail, BRT) plus RM5 of stored value on a Touch 'n Go card. Worth pricing against separate tickets if you are here for a short city break; collect it at the KLIA Ekspres counters in T1 (International Arrival, Level 3), T2 (International Arrival, Level 2) or KL Sentral.

The commuter option: KLIA Transit

Same track, same fare to KL Sentral, but it stops at Salak Tinggi, Putrajaya & Cyberjaya and Bandar Tasik Selatan on the way. Terminal 2 to KL Sentral takes 39 minutes; Terminal 1 to KL Sentral is about 35.

Because the KL Sentral fare is identical to the Ekspres (RM55 adult, RM25 child), there is no saving on that leg. The reason to take Transit is that one of those intermediate stops is where you are actually going — and those fares are a fraction of the airport-to-city price:

  • KLIA to Salak Tinggi — RM4.90 adult, RM2.20 child
  • KLIA to Putrajaya & Cyberjaya — RM9.40 adult, RM4.20 child
  • KLIA to Bandar Tasik Selatan — RM38.40 adult, RM17.30 child (useful if you are catching a long-distance coach at TBS)
  • KLIA T1 to KLIA T2 — RM2.00 adult, RM1.00 child

Trains run every 15 minutes at weekday peak and every 30 minutes off-peak and at weekends. The last Transit leaves Terminal 2 at 00:30 and reaches KL Sentral at 01:09 — later than the Ekspres, which is the detail that saves a lot of late arrivals a surge fare.

The cheapest: airport bus

RM13–RM15 one-way to KL Sentral, from four operators — SkyBus, Aerobus, Airport Coach and Suasana Edaran — running roughly 200 services a day between them. Budget about an hour when the road is kind, and meaningfully longer when it is not.

The buses run through the night. There are departures from both terminals at 00:00, 00:30, 01:00 and 01:15, and SkyBus's first southbound run leaves KL Sentral at 03:00. If your flight lands at 2am, the bus is often the only fixed-price option still moving.

Where to find them: at Terminal 1, the bus station is on the Ground Floor of the Block C annex, about three minutes' walk from the arrival hall. At Terminal 2, it is Level 1 of the transportation hub — come down from Level 2 following the "Bus Station" signs. At KL Sentral, the bus terminal is on the LG floor; look for the Burger King, then take the escalator *down* behind and beneath the main double-railed escalator.

This is the right call if you are travelling light, watching your budget, and have no hard deadline. It is the wrong call at 6pm on a Friday, when the same trip can stretch well past ninety minutes.

Door to door: Grab and airport taxis

The only options that put you down at your actual address rather than at KL Sentral — which matters more than people expect once you factor in a second leg with luggage.

Off-peak, a standard GrabCar to central KL tends to land somewhere around RM75–RM90. During peak hours or bad weather, surge pricing can push the same ride to RM130–RM180. Airport taxis work on a fixed-fare coupon bought at the arrivals-hall counter and priced by zone, so there is no meter to argue about; budget from roughly RM85 for a budget saloon to central KL, more for a premier car or a family van. Both figures move around, so treat them as a planning range rather than a quote.

Worth doing the arithmetic: for two people with bags, a Grab at RM80 beats two Ekspres tickets at RM110 plus whatever it costs to get from KL Sentral to your door — but a Group Saver at RM40 a head flips it back the other way for three.

So which one should you take?

  • Catching a connecting flight or on a schedule — Ekspres. Pay the RM55 (or RM38.50 with a CIMB Visa Debit) and stop thinking about it.
  • Travelling alone, light bags, no rush — bus. The saving is real and you are not in a hurry.
  • Two people to the same address — Grab, usually. Three or more — Group Saver on the Ekspres, at RM40 each.
  • Heading to Putrajaya or Cyberjaya — Transit, obviously, and it is RM9.40.
  • Landing after midnight — you still have options. The last Transit leaves T2 at 00:30, and the buses run all night. Grab is the fallback, not the default.

A few practical notes

KLIA and KLIA2 are now Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. Signage, the ERL timetable and your boarding pass all use T1/T2. AirAsia and most low-cost carriers use T2. Both are on the same rail line and bus routes, but the transfer between them takes time you may not have — check which terminal your flight actually uses before you plan anything.

KL Sentral is a transfer hub, not a destination. The train gets you there fast, but unless you are staying nearby you will still need an LRT, MRT or Grab for the last stretch. Factor that in when you compare against a door-to-door fare.

Luggage on the bus is fine but tight. If you are travelling with more than a carry-on each, the bus stops being the comfortable saving it looks like on paper.

Before you travel

Fares and timetables change, and they have changed on this route before. Confirm the current price and the first or last departure on the operator's own site on the day you fly.

One current promotion worth not being confused by: ERL's Merdeka 50%-off return fare, on sale 26–31 August 2026 for travel 29–31 August, applies only to KLIA Transit return trips involving Putrajaya & Cyberjaya — not to the airport sectors. If you are flying, it does not help you.
