> Quick view: book by 15 December 2026 and most of Hard Rock Hotel Penang's festive meals drop by RM10 to RM30 an adult. Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve buffets at Starz Diner become RM220 nett. Boxing Day and 2 January at LEÑA become RM160 nett. If you only want one night, the best value is the NYE buffet plus the RM60 party ticket, at RM280 an adult.

All prices below are nett and come from the hotel's Christmas page and New Year page, read on 4 November. The menus state that nett includes the 10% service charge and prevailing taxes.

Note that the "New Year buffet" is on 2 January, not New Year's Day. At the buffets and LEÑA's Christmas set, a child aged 5 to 12 pays RM90 to RM120 early bird. Seniors aged 60 and above get their own lower buffet rate. Hard Rock Cafe's kids' sets are RM85 on Christmas Eve and RM90 on NYE, for ages 6 to 12.

What you get on the buffet

The Christmas Eve menu is seafood-led: freshly shucked oysters, Boston lobster, snow crab legs and sashimi, plus a carving station with Australian Black Angus striploin, whole turkey and Moroccan spiced lamb leg. There is a kids' station, a pasta station, dim sum, Christmas pudding and yule logs. Coffee, tea and detox water are included. Free-flow beer is an extra RM98 per person, and bottles of wine start at RM150.

The NYE buffet page highlights beef short ribs, Hong Kong style orange duck, seafood thermidor and croquembouche.

Worked costs

  • Couple, Christmas Eve buffet: RM440 early bird, against RM500 standard. Add free-flow beer for both and it is RM636.
  • Two adults and two children aged 5 to 12, Christmas Eve buffet: RM680 early bird, RM800 standard, RM540 on Stage Pass rates.
  • Couple, NYE buffet plus party: RM440 + RM120 = RM560. Booked after 15 December it is RM620.
  • Couple, Hard Rock Cafe NYE set plus party: RM520.20 + RM120 = RM640.20.
  • Couple, party only: RM198 by 25 December, then RM216.
  • Couple, Boxing Day at LEÑA: RM320 early bird, the cheapest festive dinner of the set.

The fine print that trips people up

Three deadlines. 15 December covers the Starz Diner and LEÑA meals and Hard Rock Cafe's Christmas Eve set. Hard Rock Cafe's NYE set runs to 20 December. The party's RM99 runs to 25 December. The menus also say "booking and payment in advance required", so ask whether payment has to be in by the same date.

The RM60 party ticket has limits. The page names Hard Rock Cafe and Starz Diner guests only. LEÑA's NYE pop-up is not on that list, and its food is not priced on the page, so ask before you plan around it.

Stage Pass is not always the big win. It saves RM40 an adult over the early bird at Starz Diner, but only RM12 on LEÑA's Christmas set. On the party it matches the RM99 early bird, though it still gives RM99 after 25 December. The annual fee is not published, so call the Stage Pass officer on +60 4 886 8014 before assuming it pays for itself. No Stage Pass rate is listed for the Hard Rock Cafe sets.

Halal. The Christmas Eve menu lists turkey ham and beef salami, and LEÑA's kids' menu uses chicken pepperoni. However, the offer pages make no halal certification claim and alcohol is sold, so ask the hotel if you need certification. Hard Rock Cafe's menu also says you must be 21 or over with valid ID to drink. Menus can change with ingredient availability.

Who it suits, and who should look elsewhere

It suits families who want a beach-resort Christmas, because of the children's station and the Roxity Kids Club and poolside activities the hotel lists for both Christmas and NYE. It also suits groups who want dinner and a countdown without changing venue, since the party has live act Superfrenz, DJs, a bonfire and midnight fireworks.

If price matters most, compare Amari SPICE Penang's festive page. Its Christmas Eve and NYE buffets are RM198 for adults on the early bird, RM22 less than Starz Diner, but full payment is due by 6 December and that rate is for adults only. With two children aged 6 to 11, Amari's Christmas Eve bill is RM672, only RM8 under Hard Rock's RM680.

Batu Ferringhi is on the island's north coast and New Year's Eve traffic can be slow, so allow extra time if you are driving in from George Town.

Staying over, and the other festive offers

In-house guests get complimentary party tickets for 2 adults and 2 children per room, including 4 party packs, redeemed at the counter on the day. At the RM108 standard price, that is worth RM216 for two adults. The hotel's offers page shows a holiday sale of up to 30% off room rates. It gives no travel dates there, so check your own dates on the booking engine.

The renovation notice, updated 3 November, says Phase 1 of the room works runs until November 2026 and Phase 2 runs from 15 February to 30 November 2027. A December stay falls between the two phases.

  • Rock Spa, 1 Dec to 3 Jan: 2-hour Hard Rock Massage for RM354 (worth RM590). Add a Mini Hot Stone Set for RM25. Call +60 19 412 8728 at least 24 hours ahead.
  • Rock Shop, 1 Dec to 3 Jan: spend RM450 and get RM50 back, RM850 and get RM120 back, or RM1,500 and get RM250 back, in a single transaction. That covers the hotel shop and Rock Shop George Town, going by the two contact numbers listed.
  • Hard Rock Cafe drinks, 1 to 31 Dec: Ferringhi Afrididi cocktail RM40, Holiday FM mocktail RM30.

Bringing children earlier in the season? The same hotel's International Children's Day on 21 November is RM60 a child.
