What you actually pay

The three rates published on the hotel's own campaign artwork are:

  • Adult — RM95.00 nett
  • Senior citizen, 55 years and above — RM70.00 nett
  • Child, 6 to 12 years — RM44.00 nett

The word doing the work here is nett. The artwork states plainly that all prices are inclusive of 6% SST, which means there is no service charge or tax bolted on at the till. A great many Malaysian hotel buffets quote a plus-plus figure that lands roughly 16% higher than advertised once service charge and SST are applied; this one does not. If four people eat, you multiply the rates and that is the bill.

That matters most in the middle of the table. A senior citizen pays RM70 rather than RM95, and a primary-schooler pays RM44 — under half the adult rate. Buffets that charge children a flat two-thirds of the adult price quietly punish families; RM44 for a 6-to-12-year-old is on the generous side for a hotel spread in Penang.

Worth knowing, though: RM44 is not a Merdeka concession. It is the same child rate Wembley Cafe charges on an ordinary weekend, which is the first clue that this event is a public-holiday edition of the cafe's regular weekend buffet lunch rather than a discount event. The next section works out what that means for the price you actually pay.

Is this actually a Merdeka discount?

Short answer: no — and it is better to know that before you book.

Wembley Cafe already runs a themed buffet lunch every Saturday and Sunday, 12pm to 3pm: the same room, the same three-hour window, the same Level L address. The series gets renamed every few months — it has run as The Spice Routes, Straits & Spice and, most recently, Spice of Life — but the format is constant. The hotel publishes no buffet rate card on its own website; third-party Penang buffet listings put the current weekend lunch at RM88 nett adult, RM68 nett senior and RM44 nett child.

Line those up against the Merdeka Feast:

  • Adult — RM95 against about RM88 on a normal weekend: roughly RM7 more
  • Senior 55 and above — RM70 against about RM68: RM2 more
  • Child 6 to 12 — RM44 against RM44: identical

So the Merdeka Feast is priced slightly *above* the everyday weekend buffet, not below it. That is not a complaint — a festive public-holiday menu costing RM7 more than a regular Sunday is entirely reasonable, and Merdeka Day falls on a Monday this year, when this buffet would not normally run at all. But it does change why you book: come because you want to eat out in George Town on Merdeka Day, not because you think you are catching a sale.

How the three perks work

August babies dine for free. The condition is specific and easy to misread: the birthday guest eats free when accompanied by two paying adults. Two, not one. A couple in which one partner has an August birthday does not qualify — you need two full-paying adults at the table alongside the celebrant.

One thing the artwork does not mention: this is not a Merdeka-only perk either. Wembley Cafe's own posts for its regular weekend buffet lunch carry the same mechanic — the birthday guest dines free when accompanied by two paying guests. If your celebrant's birthday falls in another month, the standing weekend offer does the same job on an ordinary Saturday or Sunday.

Wear Merdeka colours, get a free F&B voucher. The artwork says a complimentary food-and-beverage voucher goes to anyone wearing any Merdeka colours, which is a loose enough brief that red, white, blue or yellow in any form should read as an attempt. What the artwork does not say is what the voucher is worth, where it can be spent or how long it stays valid — so treat it as a nice extra rather than part of the value calculation, and ask on the phone if it matters to you.

Free parking for all diners. Parking in central George Town on a public holiday is the sort of small friction that turns a RM95 lunch into a RM110 afternoon, so this one is worth more than it sounds. The artwork does not spell out the validation mechanic, so bring your ticket to the restaurant and ask the host to stamp or validate it before you leave. This too is a standing Wembley Cafe benefit rather than a Merdeka one — complimentary parking for diners appears on the cafe's regular buffet listings as well.

Strip out those two standing benefits and the genuinely Merdeka-specific perk is the F&B voucher for wearing the colours — which is also the one perk the hotel attaches no value to.

Worked examples

Using the published rates, with no perks applied:

  • Two adults — RM190
  • Two adults, two children aged 6 to 12 — RM278
  • Two adults, one senior parent — RM260
  • Two adults, two senior parents — RM330
  • Two adults, two seniors, two children — RM418 for six people, about RM70 a head

Now apply the birthday perk. If the guest of honour has an August birthday and two paying adults come along, the table of three pays RM190 for three people — about RM63 a head. Extend that to two paying adults, one August celebrant and two children aged 6 to 12: RM278 for five people, roughly RM56 a head, which is genuinely cheap for a hotel buffet on Merdeka Day.

How it compares with the other Penang Merdeka buffet

The obvious comparison is PARKROYAL Penang Resort's Marvelous Malaysia buffet dinner on the same day, where the RM188 adult rate carries a buy-one-free-one mechanic that brings a couple down to roughly RM94 a head. On adult pricing, the two land within a ringgit of each other.

The difference is everything else. PARKROYAL's child rate is RM108; St Giles Wembley's is RM44. PARKROYAL is a beachfront dinner at Batu Ferringhi, a 30-to-40-minute drive north-west of George Town on a day when that coastal road is at its worst; St Giles Wembley is a lunch in the middle of the city. And PARKROYAL's mechanic rewards even-numbered adult groups, while St Giles Wembley's rewards seniors, children and August birthdays. Pick on the shape of your table, not on the headline number.

Can you stack a membership discount on it?

No — and both obvious routes fail, for related reasons.

  • CHM Club members can redeem an eVoucher for 20% off weekend buffet lunch and dinner at Wembley Cafe, valid until 30 November 2026. Its terms exclude public holidays, eves of public holidays and special festive periods, it is dine-in only, and it cannot be combined with other vouchers, discounted items or loyalty programmes. Merdeka Day is a public holiday and this is a festive buffet, so it is out on two counts.
  • Malaysian Institute of Accountants members get 15% off at Wembley Cafe, but the privilege is scoped to buffet lunch on Saturdays and Sundays and buffet dinner on Fridays and Saturdays. 31 August 2026 is a Monday, so it does not apply either.

The practical read: RM95 nett is the price, and the only thing that moves it is the August-birthday mechanic.

Who it's good for, and who should skip it

Good for: multigenerational family lunches, where the senior and child rates do real work; anyone with an August birthday who can round up two paying adults; people already in George Town on the public holiday who do not want to spend an hour of it in traffic; and anyone who dislikes plus-plus pricing and wants to know the bill in advance.

Skip it if: you are a couple and nothing else — RM190 for two, with no stacking mechanic on offer, is fine but not remarkable, and the buy-one-free-one dinner up the coast does more for a party of exactly two. Skip it too if what you actually want is simply the Wembley Cafe buffet rather than the occasion: an ordinary Saturday or Sunday lunch runs about RM7 less a head, carries the same birthday and parking perks, and is the only window in which a CHM Club or MIA discount would actually apply. And skip it if you were hoping for a published menu to plan around — the hotel has not released a dish list for this event, and Wembley Cafe's themed buffets rotate.

Where it is, and why the location matters

Wembley Cafe sits on Level L of St Giles Wembley, the hotel's all-day dining room, in the heart of George Town. On the hotel's own listing the cafe runs breakfast from 6.30am to 10.30am, lunch from 12.00pm to 3.00pm and dinner from 6.00pm to 10.00pm — so the Merdeka Feast occupies the standard lunch window rather than a special late sitting. In practice that means one seating, three hours, and a room that will fill from about half past twelve on a public holiday.

Being a city hotel rather than a resort changes the day around it. A Merdeka lunch here slots between a morning walk around the heritage core and an afternoon of the usual George Town business, without a beach-road commute at either end.

Fine print that trips people up

  • The birthday perk needs two paying adults — a single companion is not enough
  • The child rate covers ages 6 to 12 only; the artwork publishes no rate for children under six, so ask when you book rather than assuming they eat free
  • The F&B voucher's value, validity and redemption terms are not published — confirm on the phone if you are counting on it

If you want to make a night of it

Separately from the buffet, St Giles Wembley's own offers page carries a Visit Malaysia 2026 Early Bird Offer: guests who confirm a stay at least 14 days in advance receive 15% savings, an offer the hotel states is valid until 31 December 2026. It is a straightforward advance-purchase discount rather than a Merdeka-specific one, and the hotel does not publish a room rate against it, so the saving depends on the rate you are quoted. If you are travelling in for the long weekend from outside Penang, booking a fortnight out is the difference between paying the walk-up rate and not.
