Nights of Fright is the one night in the Klang Valley calendar where a water park stops being a water park. Sunway Lagoon shuts the slides, turns the lights off and fills the place with scare actors, and for six weeks it sells a completely different product at a completely different price.

The twelfth edition is called The Apeocalypse. Sunway Lagoon's own key art puts a crowned gorilla in front of a burning forest under the line "this year, humanity is no longer in control". Tickets are on sale now on Sunway Lagoon's own webstore, and the interesting part is not the theme.

We first read this event on 6 September and went back through the same checkout on 10 September 2026. Three things had moved, and all three are the sort of thing the marketing does not update. Four of the twenty nights can no longer be bought, opening night among them. The colour-coded calendar Sunway publishes is a JPEG that has not been re-uploaded since 24 August, so it now contradicts the till in both directions. And the park's roller coaster is still shut — not for an upgrade, as the closure notice implied, but because of an incident on 22 August that injured ten riders and is now the subject of a police investigation expected to run three to four months.

As of 10 September, four nights are gone from the webstore: Friday 25 September, Friday 2 October, Sunday 1 November and Friday 6 November. All seven Saturdays are still buyable. The Xpress Pass has already run out for Saturday 3 October. From 21 September the day park closes at 6pm, not 11pm. And the roller coaster is closed for the season.

What you actually pay

Sunway Lagoon sells Nights of Fright 12 through its own ticketing system rather than only through resellers, and the checkout is unusually literal about what you are buying. There are two products.

The first is NOF 12 Admission Ticket + Potato Crisps at RM138.00. The crisps are listed as a separate line at RM0.00, and the store instructs you to select the same quantity of crisps as tickets: five tickets means five crisps. It is a free item, not a discount, and Sunway Lagoon marks it while stocks last.

The second is NOF 12 Admission Ticket + Xpress Pass + Potato Crisps at RM236.00, which is the same RM138 ticket plus the NOF 12 Xpress Pass + Early Access at RM98.00. Sunway Lagoon's own product note is blunt about what that pass is not: it is "an express lane pass, NOT an admission ticket", so nobody should buy it alone and expect to get in.

Both prices are final. Sunway Lagoon's online ticketing terms state that since 1 January 2022 all admission rates are quoted in ringgit inclusive of 5 percent Entertainment Tax and any other prevailing taxes or charges. There is no service charge waiting at the payment page.

The published calendar and the actual till no longer agree

Most event pages tell you the dates. Sunway Lagoon publishes something that looks better: a colour-coded month grid, green for available, yellow for selling fast, pink for sold out. It is worth understanding what that grid actually is before you plan around it. It is a single PNG file, uploaded to Sunway Lagoon's website and, per the file's own last-modified header, not touched since 24 August 2026. It is artwork, not a feed. Nothing about it updates when a night sells out.

The live position is in the webstore's date picker, which is where your money actually goes. Here is what the poster says against what the checkout offered on 10 September 2026.

Nights the poster colours green, but the webstore will not sell you: Friday 25 September — the opening night — Friday 2 October, and Friday 6 November. Three nights the artwork still advertises as freely available are simply not selectable.

The one night the poster calls sold out: Sunday 1 November. Still gone. That much is right.

Nights the poster flags as selling fast: Saturday 26 September and Saturdays 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31 October, plus the closing Saturday of 7 November. Every one of those seven is still on sale. The yellow flag has not converted into a single sell-out in more than two weeks.

So the poster's central signal is now inverted. It teaches you that Saturdays are the scarce nights and Fridays are the quiet ones. In practice three of the seven Fridays have gone and none of the seven Saturdays has. Opening night went first, which is the pattern you would expect at a horror event with a loyal following, and it is the one night the artwork most confidently tells you is available.

What you can actually buy on 10 September 2026: Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 September; Saturday 3, Sunday 4, Friday 9, Saturday 10, Sunday 11, Friday 16, Saturday 17, Sunday 18, Friday 23, Saturday 24, Sunday 25, Friday 30 and Saturday 31 October; and Saturday 7 November. Sixteen of the twenty nights.

The practical rule: ignore the colours and open the date picker. It takes one click on the webstore, and it is the only surface that reflects what is left.

Is the Xpress Pass worth RM98

RM98 on top of a RM138 ticket is a 71 percent uplift, which is steep enough to need an argument rather than a shrug. Sunway Lagoon gives two.

The first is queue skipping at selected rides and attractions. The second, and the one that actually matters at a scare event, is timing: Xpress Pass holders enter from 7pm, 30 minutes before general entry at 7.30pm. On a night with a hard 11pm entry cut-off and an 11.30pm close, a half hour at the front of the run is a meaningful share of the evening, not a rounding error.

The honest way to price it is per hour. General admission buys you roughly three and a half hours for RM138, about RM39 an hour. The bundle buys four hours for RM236, about RM59 an hour. You are paying a third more per hour for the privilege of spending less of it standing still.

That is a good trade on a busy night and a poor one on a quiet one. Our original reading was: buy the pass for the Saturdays, skip it for the Fridays. The 10 September re-check complicates that in a useful way.

The Xpress Pass runs out before the ticket does. The pass has its own inventory, and on 10 September it was available for one fewer night than admission was. Saturday 3 October is the gap: you can still buy a RM138 ticket for that night, but the RM98 pass for it is gone. Every other night that sells admission still sells the pass. If a specific Saturday is the only date that works for you and the queue-skip is the reason you are going at all, check the pass before you buy the ticket, because the ticket is non-refundable and the pass cannot be added later once it sells out.

The second complication is that the Fridays are no longer reliably the quiet nights, since three of them have sold out entirely. On the Fridays that remain — 9, 16, 23 and 30 October — the original logic still holds: you are paying a 71 percent premium to skip queues that may not be long.

The catch that is not on the event page

This is the finding that will cost people money if they miss it. Sunway Lagoon announced it on 3 August 2026 on its own Instagram account, in a graphic that reads "Sunway Lagoon Day Park and Captain Quack Land will operate from 10am-6pm starting from 21 September to 7 November 2026". It also ran as a notice on the homepage. By 10 September the homepage notice had been replaced by an unrelated privacy-policy update, and we could not find the hours change anywhere else on sunwaylagoon.com — not on the pricing page, not on the Nights of Fright page, and not in the ticket checkout. The Instagram post is still up and still pinned. Treat it as live, and if you are buying a day ticket for October, ring the park on +603 5639 0000 first rather than trusting the footer.

Normal hours are 10am to 11pm, with the Night Park running 6pm to 11pm and last entry at 10.30pm — and those are still the hours printed in the footer of every page on Sunway Lagoon's own website. So for the whole Nights of Fright season, and starting four days before the event even opens, a standard day ticket is worth five fewer hours than the one your friend bought in August, at the same price.

Those prices, re-read from the pricing page on 10 September 2026, are unchanged: MyKad holders pay RM198 adult and RM150 child or senior at the gate, or RM193 and RM145 booked online, the RM5 online saving Sunway advertises. Without a MyKad it is RM268 adult and RM200 child or senior. Admission covers every park and attraction except the pay-per-ride items — Bungy Jump, G-Force X and Go Kart.

One trap to flag rather than assert. The same pricing page still publishes a Night Park rate card at RM99 adult and RM89 child or senior, or RM94 and RM84 online, with no mention of the 21 September to 7 November hours change anywhere near it. Captain Quack Land *is* the Night Park, and the notice puts it on 10am to 6pm hours for that window. We could not find a Night Park product on sale in the webstore for a date inside the window, but the rate card sitting there unqualified is exactly how someone ends up holding a 6pm-to-11pm ticket for an evening the park is shut. Confirm the date with the park before you pay for one.

If you were planning a normal family day out at Sunway Lagoon in October, this is the single most useful thing on this page. Either accept an eight-hour day, or go before 21 September, or go after 7 November.

The roller coaster is closed, and not for an upgrade

When we first wrote this up, Sunway Lagoon's homepage carried a notice listing three attractions as temporarily closed for upgrading: the Lost City of Gold Scream Coaster, Tomahawk and Cannonball. "Upgrading" turns out to be an incomplete account of at least one of them, and the fuller version matters if you are deciding whether to spend an evening here.

On 22 August 2026, at about 9pm, Sunway Lagoon's roller coaster stopped abruptly. Selangor's Department of Occupational Safety and Health said the ride had been operating normally before what it described as a sliding failure about 200 metres from the disembarkation point triggered the automatic emergency braking system. Twenty-two riders were on board, Malaysians and foreign visitors aged between 11 and 44, and ten of them were injured. Sunway Group founder Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah publicly suggested metal fatigue as a possible cause.

In a statement carried by Bernama on 2 September 2026, Sunway Lagoon Sdn Bhd confirmed that all guests admitted to hospital for observation had since been discharged, that the ride "remains closed pending an investigation", and that it was cooperating with the authorities. On 7 September, Selangor police chief Shazeli Kahar said the investigation — run with DOSH, the Fire and Rescue Department and forensic teams, and looking at whether negligence or sabotage played any part — would take three to four months because technical reports from several agencies are still outstanding.

Three to four months from early September lands in December at the earliest. The coaster will not reopen during Nights of Fright 12. Neither the event page nor the ticket checkout mentions any of this, and by 10 September the closure notice itself had rotated off Sunway Lagoon's homepage, so a first-time buyer would have no way to know from the sales funnel alone.

None of this is a reason to assume the horror event is unsafe: it is a walk-through production rather than a ride programme, and the closed attraction is not part of it. It is a reason to know what you are buying. If your plan was a day at the park built around the coaster, that plan does not work between now and the end of the year.

Fine print that trips people up

The crisps are not in the park. Redemption is at Level G, Oasis, Sunway Pyramid, in front of Akemi Home, unit G1.113A, from 10am to 9.30pm on the event day. Sunway Pyramid is next door to the theme park, but 9.30pm is before the event ends, so if you arrive at 8pm and leave at 11.30pm you will have missed the window entirely. Collect on your way in, not on your way out.

No refunds, and barely any exceptions. Sunway Lagoon's online ticketing terms say no exchange, refund, replacement or extension will be made under any circumstances, and no cancellation is accepted once the purchase is confirmed. There is a case-by-case escape hatch requiring management approval, and it carries a 3 percent refund processing fee. Since tickets are date-locked, a rained-out or double-booked Saturday is your problem, not theirs.

Your voucher will not work. The same terms state plainly that discount vouchers, promotional coupons or other offers cannot be used in conjunction with e-tickets. If you have been saving a Sunway voucher for this, it does not stack.

Buy at least a day ahead. Sunway Lagoon advises purchasing e-tickets 24 hours before the visit date so the transaction can process, and warns that failing to do so may mean paying normal admission at the gate.

One entry only. Wristbands are single entry and non-transferable. Leave the park and you do not come back in on the same band. Outside food and drink are not allowed.

Children need an adult. Sunway Lagoon's admission rules require anyone 12 or under to be accompanied by a competent person aged 18 or above. That is a park-wide rule, and it applies at a horror event where it matters more than usual.

Worked examples

Two adults, a Friday in October. 2 x RM138 = RM276, with two bags of crisps included. Collect them at Sunway Pyramid before 9.30pm. Note that 2 October is no longer available, so the Fridays left are 9, 16, 23 and 30 October.

Two adults, a Saturday, with Xpress Passes. 2 x RM236 = RM472. You are paying RM196 more than the plain pair of tickets, and getting in at 7pm instead of 7.30pm on the busiest night type of the run.

A group of four on the closing Saturday, 7 November. 4 x RM138 = RM552 without passes, or RM944 with. On the 10 September check every Saturday of the run was still selling, so a group of four has more choice here than the poster suggests — but 7 November is the last night, and the two Fridays either side of it are already gone.

Two adults on Saturday 3 October, wanting the queue-skip. This is the one combination the webstore will not sell you as a bundle. Admission is available at 2 x RM138 = RM276; the Xpress Pass for that night is not. You either go without the pass, or move to Saturday 10 October and pay 2 x RM236 = RM472.

Against a normal day ticket. The cheapest MyKad day-park rate is RM145 and the top of the band is RM193. Nights of Fright at RM138 is cheaper than both, which is unusual for a special event. What you give up is duration: eight hours of seven parks versus three and a half hours of one horror event.

Who this is for, and who should skip it

Go if you actually like being chased, your date is flexible, and you are comfortable spending RM138 on three and a half hours of theatre. It is a well-run, long-established production, now in its twelfth year, and Sunway Lagoon runs it as a proper seasonal event rather than a decorated corner of the park. Book from the date picker rather than the poster, and book early: the run is a fifth sold out and it is only mid-September.

Go with the Xpress Pass if the only date that works for you is a Saturday. That RM98 buys you the first half hour and the shorter lines on the busiest night type of the run. Buy it in the same transaction as the ticket — it has separate inventory, it has already sold out for 3 October, and it cannot be bought on its own afterwards.

Skip it if you are bringing children under about 12. Beyond Sunway Lagoon's own supervision rule, a scare event that runs to 11.30pm on a school night is a difficult sell, and there is no child rate on the webstore: one price, one product.

Definitely skip it if what you actually wanted was the water park. Between 21 September and 7 November you would be paying more than the Nights of Fright price for a day that now ends at 6pm, with three attractions closed and the roller coaster out until the investigation into the 22 August incident concludes, which police put at three to four months from early September. Go in the second week of November instead, and accept that the coaster probably still will not be running.

How to buy

Tickets are sold on Sunway Lagoon's own webstore at eticket.sunwaylagoon.com, and the event page with the calendar artwork sits at sunwaylagoon.com/nightsoffright12. You must pick a date before adding to cart, and you must add the crisps line in the same quantity as your tickets or the store will not let the order through cleanly.

The one step worth doing in order: on the webstore, expand NOF 12 Admission Ticket + Potato Crisps, click Select Date/Time, and read the month grid there. Unselectable dates are the ones that have gone. Do that before you look at the poster, not after.

Sunway Lagoon is at 3, Jalan PJS 11/11, Bandar Sunway, 47500 Selangor, operated by Sunway Lagoon Sdn Bhd (211311-A). The theme park is closed every Tuesday except on Malaysian school and public holidays, which does not affect Nights of Fright since the event only runs Friday to Sunday.
