Best Interior Design & Renovation Firms in Penang 2026

Penang's interior design scene has grown well beyond a handful of George Town shophouse specialists — today the island and mainland are home to design-and-build studios, family-run carpentry outfits, and luxury renovation firms serving everything from Straits-eclectic heritage homes to new condos in Bayan Lepas and Tanjung Tokong. This list covers eight firms verified to be genuinely based in or actively serving Penang, each with its own working website you can check for current portfolios and contact details. As always, treat any pricing you find elsewhere as indicative only — get a site visit and written quote before committing to any firm.

What a Penang renovation actually costs in 2026

None of the eight firms below advertise fixed package prices, which makes it hard to know whether a quote is reasonable. The most useful public benchmark comes from one of them: Ethnic ID publishes an open Penang renovation cost guide, and its bands line up with what the other Penang design-and-build outfits quote for similar scopes.

Ethnic ID's planning ranges (light refresh / full renovation / premium), as published in its May 2026 guide:

  • Small condo: RM50k–90k / RM90k–180k / RM180k+
  • Condo, 900–1,300 sqft: RM80k–150k / RM150k–280k / RM280k+
  • Terrace house: RM120k–220k / RM220k–450k / RM450k+
  • Semi-D: RM180k–350k / RM350k–700k / RM700k+
  • Bungalow: RM300k–600k / RM600k–1.2mil / RM1.2mil+

The guide itself warns these are planning ranges, not quotations: an older landed house often needs rewiring, plumbing, waterproofing and floor levelling before any design work starts, so it lands higher in its band than a new condo.

Where the money actually goes on a typical 1,000 sqft Penang condo: carpentry RM50k–120k (usually the single largest line), kitchen and wet works RM15k–60k, loose furniture RM20k–80k, electrical and lighting RM10k–30k, appliances RM10k–35k, ceiling and painting RM8k–25k, design and coordination RM8k–20k, and curtains RM5k–15k.

Two things follow from that breakdown. First, carpentry is where quotes diverge most — which is why the firms below that run their own workshop (Ethnic ID, Legno, Geometry, Vogueas) can hold a price that outsourced contractors often revise. Second, a "renovation budget" that excludes loose furniture, appliances and curtains can understate your real move-in cost by RM35k–130k, so ask every firm explicitly what their quote leaves out.

1. Mini Design Studio (Miniid Sdn Bhd)

A full-service design-and-build firm based on Jalan Westland in George Town, established in 2014. Mini Design Studio handles both residential and commercial interior design, from concept and space planning through to build-out and handover. Its portfolio spans homes, offices and retail spaces across Penang island, and it is a CIDB-registered contractor. The studio is at 18 Jalan Westland (019-831 6732).

2. Wood & Col Sdn Bhd

An architecture-led interior design and build practice founded in 2012 by YH Yong and Diana, based in Gelugor and serving Penang island including Bayan Lepas. The team combines architects, interior designers and builders under one roof, offering design & build, building extensions, renovation, space planning and custom furniture. Wood & Col has been involved in over 150 residential and commercial projects since founding, and its site lists Atap Design Awards (including a 2023 platinum) and DOTY residential-design merits in 2023 and 2025. The office is at 12 Lintang Minden 3, Gelugor (04-609 7515).

3. Vogueas Interior Design Plt

A one-stop design-and-build studio in Tanjung Bungah (30 Taman Tanjung 2) founded by Andrew and Cindy in 2018 and registered as an LLP (LLP003807-LGN), offering residential and commercial interior design. The first consultation is free — its enquiry form asks for property type, from apartment to bungalow, shophouse or commercial unit. Each client is assigned a senior designer for the full project, with services covering space planning, conceptual and detail drawings, site coordination, and in-house carpentry and masonry works.

4. Geometry Design and Build Group Sdn Bhd

A turnkey interior design and build contractor established in 2019 and headquartered at 1-01-26 Persiaran Halia 3, Tanjung Tokong, with a KL branch at Seri Gembira Avenue, Jalan Senang Ria (Kuala Lumpur). Geometry manages the full process from consultation and material selection to execution and handover, and set up its own 6,000 sq ft carpentry factory in Juru, Simpang Ampat in 2021. The firm was recognised in the SME100 Awards Penang 2022 hall of fame.

5. Ethnic ID (Ethnic ID Sdn Bhd)

A George Town interior design and renovation contractor with roots in a family furniture business dating back to the 1970s, which expanded into custom kitchen and cabinetry work (Ethnic Kitchen System) in the early 1990s. Ethnic runs its own in-house carpentry workshop and specialises in built-in furniture and teak/wood furniture, and is also an authorised King Koil mattress dealer. It offers full and partial interior design & build services from its base at 19 Jalan Gottlieb, George Town (04-229 8712), and says it has transformed 500+ spaces since 2001.

6. Legno ID & Construction Sdn Bhd

A turnkey residential and commercial interior design and build firm in Gelugor, Penang, launched by founder Freddy Ng in 2013 as LEGNO Kitchen before growing into a full design-and-build outfit with its own in-house carpentry team from 2015. Legno (registered as Legno Construction Sdn Bhd, showroom at 46 Jalan Merak, Sungai Dua) holds ISO 9001, ISO 27001 and a CIDB G5 licence (tenders up to RM5 million) and has completed 500+ residential and commercial projects, and was named among the Top 10 Interior Design Firms in Penang by Tally Press.

7. AOHA Design (AOHA Sdn Bhd)

A Penang-based luxury interior design studio that also runs work in KL, positioning itself around integrated architecture, interior design and design-and-build delivered by one in-house team rather than outsourced contractors. AOHA focuses on high-end residential and commercial renovations, and its own marketing cites involvement in commercial and civic projects such as the Penang Digital Library, Bishop House and The Light City Gallery.

8. Grov Design Studio Sdn Bhd

A multidisciplinary interior design studio founded in 2016 by two designers and based at 23A (first floor) Persiaran Karpal Singh 2, George Town, open 9am–6pm Monday to Friday. It covers commercial, residential, retail and healthcare projects, and gives clients a Daily Logs feature (app or website) with daily site photos and notes. Grov's team of designers, interior architects and project coordinators handles everything from kitchen and bathroom design to full top-to-bottom renovations, extensions, cafes and office fit-outs.

How to pick between them

Match the firm to the property, not the brochure. Ethnic ID and Legno both grew out of carpentry and kitchen work, so they suit projects where built-ins and cabinetry are the bulk of the spend. Wood & Col is architecture-led and takes on extensions and structural changes, which matters for landed homes. AOHA and Grov are the ones to approach for high-end or commercial fit-outs; Vogueas and Mini Design Studio sit in the middle for straightforward condo and family-home work.

Ask who actually swings the hammer. Firms with an in-house carpentry team or factory — Geometry runs a 6,000 sq ft workshop in Juru, Legno has had its own carpentry team since 2015, Ethnic and Vogueas do their own joinery — control lead times and quality directly. Outsourced work isn't automatically worse, but it does mean one more party between you and a defect.

Check registration and certification, not just Instagram. Legno holds ISO 9001, ISO 27001 (data privacy — it covers your floor plans) and a CIDB G5 grade; Mini Design Studio states it is a CIDB-registered contractor; Geometry was named in the SME100 Awards Penang 2022 hall of fame. CIDB registration in particular is worth asking about for anything involving construction rather than pure decoration.

Sort the approvals before you sign. If you're in a condo or any strata property, the Strata Management Act 2013 requires written approval from the management corporation or JMB before renovation works begin, and the management office will typically also dictate working hours, lift usage, material storage and debris removal. Structural changes and extensions on landed property may additionally need council approval from MBPP or MBSP. A good firm will handle the submission — confirm in writing that they will.

Get three quotes on the same scope. Because carpentry dominates the cost, two quotes can differ by RM40k purely on cabinet material and finish. Write the scope yourself, hand the identical document to each firm, and compare line by line rather than on the bottom-line number.

Final Word

Penang's interior design market ranges from heritage-carpentry family businesses like Ethnic ID to newer turnkey outfits like Geometry Design and Build and luxury specialists like AOHA — there's no single "best" firm for everyone, only the best fit for your property type, budget and timeline. Shortlist two or three from this list based on their portfolio style, request site visits, and compare written quotes before signing anything.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much should I budget for a 1,000 sqft condo renovation in Penang?

Ethnic ID's published Penang cost guide puts a full renovation of a 900–1,300 sqft condo at RM150,000–280,000, with a lighter refresh at RM80,000–150,000 and premium work above RM280,000. On a 1,000 sqft unit the largest line is carpentry at RM50,000–120,000, followed by kitchen and wet works at RM15,000–60,000 and loose furniture at RM20,000–80,000. Design and coordination fees run RM8,000–20,000. Check whether a quote includes furniture, appliances and curtains — excluding them can understate your move-in cost by RM35,000–130,000.

Do I need approval to renovate a condo in Penang?

Yes. Under the Strata Management Act 2013, a parcel owner cannot carry out renovation works without first obtaining written approval from the management corporation or JMB, and from the relevant authority where required. In practice the management office will also set contractor working hours, which lift may be used, where materials are stored and how debris leaves the building, and will usually ask for contractor details, worker IDs and insurance. Structural changes or extensions on landed property may additionally need council approval from MBPP (island) or MBSP (mainland). Most of the design-and-build firms in this list will handle the submission — confirm that in writing before works start.

How much does interior design or renovation cost in Penang?

None of the firms in this list publish fixed package prices online, and cost varies widely depending on unit size, scope of work (partial vs full renovation), and material or carpentry choices. The most reliable way to get an accurate figure is to arrange a site visit and request a written, itemised quote from at least two or three firms before deciding.

How do I choose the right interior designer in Penang?

Look at each firm's actual completed portfolio (not just render images), check whether they have their own in-house carpentry or construction team versus outsourcing, confirm their business registration, and ask for references from recent Penang clients. It also helps to match their stated specialty — luxury, family homes, commercial fit-outs — to what you actually need.

Do these firms serve areas outside George Town, like Bayan Lepas or Bukit Mertajam?

Several firms on this list, including Wood & Col and Geometry Design and Build, explicitly serve areas across Penang island such as Bayan Lepas, and some also handle projects across the bridge on the mainland. It is worth confirming directly with each firm whether they cover your specific area, especially for Bukit Mertajam and other mainland Penang locations.

Should I hire a Penang-based firm instead of a KL firm with a Penang branch?

A firm genuinely based in Penang, like the ones featured here, tends to have better local knowledge of contractors, material suppliers, apartment/landed-property renovation rules, and site conditions specific to the island or mainland. That said, a couple of the firms on this list, such as Geometry Design and Build and AOHA Design, also operate in KL, which can be useful if you need coordination across both cities.
