Hotel ballroom or Chinese-restaurant banquet hall in JB?

Wedding banquets in Johor Bahru and greater Iskandar Malaysia split along the same two lines as anywhere else in Malaysia: a hotel ballroom, or a dedicated Chinese restaurant banquet hall. JB's hotel ballrooms are concentrated in the city centre along the Straits of Johor and in newer commercial hubs like Southkey, and tend to offer a single large, often pillarless space with in-house AV, adjoining hotel rooms and multi-cuisine catering. Chinese restaurant banquet halls, by contrast, are standalone dining venues — some in the city centre, others out toward Permas Jaya and Masai in Iskandar Puteri — that specialise specifically in Cantonese-style wedding-dinner set menus at a more classic banquet-hall scale.

What to look for in a JB venue

Beyond a name you recognise, it's worth checking whether the venue is genuinely built for weddings — a stage, LED backdrop, bridal holding room — rather than repurposed conference space, whether the ballroom or hall can be partitioned for smaller pre-events like a tea ceremony, and how far it sits from the Causeway or Second Link if a chunk of your guest list is travelling in from Singapore, a consideration that comes up specifically for JB weddings.

What a JB wedding banquet actually costs

Very few JB venues publish rates, which is the single most frustrating part of shortlisting here — most hotel and restaurant wedding pages ask you to enquire. The clearest published benchmark on this list is Opero Hotel Southkey, whose own wedding page states RM2,000 nett per table of ten for its Chinese package, and RM150 nett per pax for its Malay and Indian packages. Opero also publishes a RM800 per hour venue fee for photography sessions booked in advance, which is the sort of add-on that rarely appears until you are deep in a quotation.

Treat that as the mid-market anchor rather than the market. Chinese restaurant banquet halls like Restoran Pekin and Senibong Bay Seafood Restaurant quote per table on request and generally sit below hotel ballroom rates for a comparable head count, while the international-brand ballrooms (Renaissance, DoubleTree) sit above it. When you ask for a quote, ask specifically whether the figure is nett — Malaysian venues quote both ways, and a "++" rate adds service charge and SST on top.

The list below spans both categories — five hotel ballrooms across JB city centre and Southkey, and two established Chinese restaurant banquet specialists in Johor Jaya and Permas Jaya — all currently operating with real, findable official wedding or events pages as of August 2026.

What to check before booking

Beyond overall guest capacity, it's worth confirming whether the ballroom or hall can be divided for smaller pre-events, whether outdoor space is available for the ceremony itself, parking for a large guest list (particularly relevant for city-centre hotels), and whether the venue's own wedding team can accommodate your specific cuisine and cultural requirements. Popular JB venues — especially those along the Causeway/Second Link corridor — tend to book out early for auspicious dates and long weekends, given how many Singapore-based couples and families now hold their weddings in JB, so it pays to start early.

What happened to Thistle Johor Bahru

If you have been sent an older JB venue list, Thistle Johor Bahru and its 86ft x 102ft pillarless Orchid Ballroom will almost certainly be on it — for years it was the default answer for a 1,000-guest banquet in JB. It is no longer an option. Thistle Johor Bahru closed permanently on 30 September 2025, after 31 years, and its official wedding and ballroom pages now return errors. YTL Hotels acquired the 380-room, 17-storey Jalan Sungai Chat property from GuocoLand in a RM150 million deal and is carrying out a full refurbishment, with reporting pointing to a relaunch as an internationally branded five-star hotel. If a planner or third-party listing still quotes you the Orchid Ballroom, that listing is out of date — and if your date is far enough out, it is worth asking what the rebuilt property will be taking bookings for.

How to pick, in one pass

Work backwards from your guest count, because in JB that single number eliminates most of the list. Above 800 guests, Berjaya Waterfront Hotel is the only hotel here that reaches 1,000 in its Grand Ballroom and can extend into the adjoining JB Convention & Exhibition Centre for up to 1,600 — with Thistle gone, the very-large-wedding field in JB has genuinely narrowed. Around 700–800, Renaissance Johor Bahru (6,913 sq ft, 800 seated) and DoubleTree by Hilton (5,764 sq ft Grand Ballroom, 750 guests, plus 23,000+ sq ft of divisible space) are the two international-brand options. Around 400–450, Opero Hotel Southkey is the one venue on this list that publishes its rates and splits packages by Chinese, Malay, Indian and Western style, which saves a round of enquiries if you need a non-Chinese banquet. For a traditional Cantonese wedding dinner rather than a hotel banquet, Restoran Pekin in Johor Jaya scales to roughly 130 tables, and Senibong Bay Seafood Restaurant offers a coastal-view hall at around 20–30 tables. If skyline views matter more than a published capacity, Grand Paragon in Taman Century is the city-centre option, though you will have to confirm numbers directly.

One JB-specific factor worth weighting: if a meaningful share of your guest list is crossing from Singapore, drive time from the Causeway or Second Link on your actual date — not on an average day — should influence the shortlist as much as the ballroom itself.
