It starts with Portuguese egg tarts Buy 1 Free 1 on 25 and 26 September, moves to 50% off the Hi-Tea Set and then 50% off Onde Onde Bingsu (both 3pm to 6pm only), and ends with a free Rose Blue Pea drink when you order Nyonya Style Nasi Kerabu. Only the Starling outlet is included.

Kakatoo is a JAKIM halal-certified Nyonya chain with around ten outlets across the Klang Valley, known for its nasi kerabu, curry laksa and kuih. The deals were announced on Kakatoo Malaysia's official Facebook page, and the base prices below come from the menus Kakatoo publishes on kakatoo.my.

The four rounds, in order

  1. 25-26 September: Portuguese Egg Tart Buy 1 Free 1, from 12pm. Just two days, and it starts at noon rather than at opening, so a morning visit will not get it.
  2. 27 September-4 October: Hi-Tea Set 50% off, 3pm-6pm. Kakatoo's flagship menu lists two Nyonya Hi-Tea sets. Tea For 2 (RM49.90) has four pieces of Nyonya kuih, two samosas, two Portuguese tarts, a slice of onde-onde cake and two teh or Nyonya coffees. Tea For 1 (RM29.90) has one kuih, one tart, one slice of onde-onde cake and one drink.
  3. 5-17 October: Onde Onde Bingsu 50% off, 3pm-6pm. Kakatoo describes it as shaved ice with pandan milk, gula Melaka syrup, onde-onde mochi and grated coconut. It is listed at RM28.90.
  4. 18-31 October: free Rose Blue Pea with Nyonya Style Nasi Kerabu, all day. The nasi kerabu set is RM33.90 and comes with Baba fried chicken, satay chicken, fried angku and salted egg.

What you actually pay

These figures use the prices on Kakatoo's own menus and are before the 6% SST and 10% service charge printed on every menu page.

  • Hi-Tea for two: RM49.90 at half price is RM24.95, about RM12.50 a person for tea, pastries and kuih. That saves RM24.95.
  • Hi-Tea for one: RM29.90 becomes RM14.95.
  • Onde Onde Bingsu: RM28.90 becomes RM14.45. That is big enough for two to share after lunch.
  • Nasi Kerabu plus drink: you pay the usual RM33.90 and get a drink added. Rose Blue Pea isn't on the published menu, but Kakatoo's other butterfly pea drinks cost RM10.90 to RM17.90, so it is worth roughly that much to you.
  • Egg tarts: Kakatoo doesn't publish a standalone tart price, so check at the counter before you buy a box.

The best value is the Hi-Tea round. At RM24.95 for two before charges, it costs less than one nasi kerabu set.

Who it's good for, and who should skip it

Good for: people who work or live around Damansara Uptown and can be at the mall between 3pm and 6pm on a weekday; families who need halal Nyonya food; and anyone who already plans a Starling trip for shopping or the cinema. The final round is the easiest to use because it runs all day, lunch and dinner included.

Skip it if you can only come in the evening during the Hi-Tea and bingsu rounds, or you're hoping to use it at Sunway Pyramid, IOI City Mall or another Kakatoo. The post names only The Starling.

Fine print that trips people up

  • The hours are strict. Arrive at 6.10pm and you pay full price for the Hi-Tea or bingsu. The egg tart deal only starts at 12pm.
  • Each round ends on its own. The Hi-Tea discount stops after 4 October and the bingsu round begins on 5 October. You can't get both on one visit.
  • Menu prices may differ at this outlet. The prices above come from the flagship and classic menus Kakatoo publishes online. Kakatoo's bingsu page still says its Nyonya Bingsu is sold only at the Quill City Mall flagship, so the refreshed Starling outlet may use its own menu. Check the price on the menu in front of you.
  • Unstated terms. The post does not say whether the deals are dine-in only, whether there's a limit per table, or whether they combine with other offers. Ask before you order if it matters.
  • Charges are extra. Add the 6% SST and 10% service charge to every figure above.
