In Kota Kinabalu, Shangri-La Tanjung Aru's Signature box is RM198, but it falls to RM175 a box at 6 and RM155 a box at 60, and the last order is 24 September. Hyatt Regency Kinabalu's Golden Bloom set is RM268, its early bird is over, and buying the same four mooncakes one by one costs RM58 less.

Hotel mooncakes in Kota Kinabalu are usually sold the old way: a flyer, a WhatsApp number and a price you only learn when you ask. This year two of the city's big hotels put the whole list online, on their own order pages, with every price printed. That makes it possible to do what you normally cannot, which is work out what a box actually costs per piece and whether the bundle is worth it.

The two lists are Shangri-La Tanjung Aru's mooncake shop, linked from the resort's own homepage, and Hyatt Regency Kinabalu's Signature Mid-Autumn Edition 2026 on the hotel's online store. Everything below comes from those two pages as they stood on 21 September 2026.

Shangri-La Tanjung Aru: three boxes and a volume ladder

The resort sells three collections from 1 to 25 September 2026.

The Signature Collection is four baked mooncakes for RM198: pure lotus seed paste with double yolk (180g), custard lava with single yolk (160g), lotus pandan with single yolk (160g) and toffee butterscotch (160g). That is 660g of mooncake, or about RM30 per 100g.

The Prestige Collection is six pieces for RM628: golden lotus seed paste with double yolk (185g), white lotus seed paste with double yolk (185g), and four 60g minis in aged mandarin peel rose with red bean, Jin Jun Mei tea with fig and red bean, jujube paste rice mooncake with longan, and custard lava. The shop marks it as available in limited quantities, and it showed 54 sets left when we checked.

The Snow Skin Collection is four 60g Musang King durian snow skins for RM208, which works out to RM52 a piece.

Only the Signature box has volume pricing, and this is where the real deal sits:

  • 1 box: RM198
  • 6 boxes: RM1,050 instead of RM1,188, so RM175 a box
  • 12 boxes: RM2,040 instead of RM2,376, so RM170 a box
  • 36 boxes: RM5,760 instead of RM7,128, so RM160 a box
  • 60 boxes: RM9,300 instead of RM11,880, so RM155 a box

At the top tier that is 21.7% off and RM38.75 a mooncake, against RM49.50 a mooncake if you buy one box.

Hyatt Regency Kinabalu: the set, or the same four singly

Hyatt's Golden Bloom Mooncake Gift Set is RM268. Inside a red and gold multi-compartment keepsake box you get four 180g baked mooncakes (pandan lotus, red bean, sugar cane white lotus with double yolk, salted white lotus with single yolk), a can of premium tea leaves and a mooncake knife. Prices are quoted as inclusive of government taxes.

The same four mooncakes are sold one by one on the same page. Red bean is RM45 and the other three are RM55 each, so buying the set's contents singly costs RM210. The RM58 difference buys you the keepsake box, the tea and the knife.

The hotel's own banner confirms a 20% early bird on the Golden Bloom set, but it ended on 15 September 2026. Anyone ordering now pays RM268.

Worked examples

A family buying for itself. You want four good mooncakes on the table on the 25th and nobody will see the box. Hyatt's four singles at RM210 or Shangri-La's Signature at RM198 are the two sensible buys. Hyatt gives you 720g against Shangri-La's 660g, so per 100g Hyatt's singles (about RM29) and Shangri-La's box (RM30) are almost identical. Choose by flavour and by which side of town you live on.

Six gifts for relatives or a small team. Six Signature boxes cost RM1,050, or RM175 each. Six Golden Bloom sets cost RM1,608. That is RM558 more for tea, a knife and a larger box, so the Hyatt set only makes sense if presentation really matters.

A company order of 40 gift boxes. This is where the ladder changes the maths. Forty is not a tier, but the tiers are listed as separate items in the shop, so they can be combined. The 36-box tier plus four single boxes comes to RM6,552, or RM163.80 a box. Stacking works further up too: 36 plus 12 gives you 48 boxes for RM7,800, and 36 plus 12 plus 6 gives you 54 for RM8,850. The 60-box price of RM9,300 only becomes the cheapest route once you need 57 boxes or more.

Who this is good for, and who should skip it

Good for corporate buyers and anyone sending boxes to several households. Shangri-La is the only hotel of the two publishing a discount right now, and at six boxes or more it is a real one.

Good for people who just want to eat well on the night. Hyatt's single mooncakes at RM45 to RM55 are a cheap way into a hotel mooncake, and you do not pay for a box you will throw away.

Skip the Prestige set unless the gift itself is the point. At RM628 for 610g it costs about RM103 per 100g, over three times the Signature box.

Skip Shangri-La if you are late. The last order is 24 September and it needs 24 hours' notice. If you are reading this on the 25th, Hyatt, whose shop runs to 30 September, is the one still open.

The fine print that trips people up

Last order is not the same as the festival. Shangri-La's offer page says 1 to 25 September, but the last order date is 24 September and pre-orders need 24 hours. Order on the 24th and you collect on the 25th.

Collection is at the hotel, and neither hotel delivers. Shangri-La's shop FAQ says only self-collect is available. Hyatt's product page gives collection at Mosaic and no delivery option. If the boxes are going to relatives outside KK, plan to pick them up and send them yourself. Shangri-La collects at the Kinabalu Lobby or at Shang Palace, Shangri-La Tanjung Aru, No. 20 Jalan Aru. Hyatt collects at Mosaic, Hyatt Regency Kinabalu, between 8am and 9pm, from 15 August to 30 September.

Hyatt's store asks for 48 hours. The shop footer says all items need a 48-hour pre-order. Plan two days ahead, not one.

Bulk pricing is Signature only. You cannot mix Prestige or snow skin boxes into the volume tiers.

Allergies go in the remarks. Both shops have a remarks field. Hyatt asks you to flag food allergies or dietary needs; custard, egg yolk, nuts and dairy all appear in these lists.
