> Quick view: Until 30 September 2026, KTMB is taking 10% off two early-morning ETS Platinum trains from Butterworth to KL Sentral. In practice that is RM10 to RM11 off each ticket, with the cheapest seats at RM93 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. It only works heading south to KL on EP9121 and EP9123. If you can board at dawn, it is the cheapest Platinum ride to KL this month. If you can't, the promotion won't help you.

KTMB's campaign poster calls it "ETS Best, Harga Best! Jimat 10%" and prices two trains: EP9121, down from RM114 to "as low as RM103" one way, and EP9123, from RM117 to "as low as RM105". The travel window is 14 to 30 September 2026, and the poster says to buy now.

The poster doesn't show how the fare changes from day to day, so we checked. On 17 September 2026 we searched eleven travel dates between 18 September and 1 October on KTMB's own booking system, online.ktmb.com.my. The figures below are the lowest one-way adult fare it showed for each train.

What the two discounted trains actually cost

ETS fares move under KTMB's Tambang Fleksi (flexible fare) system, which prices by day of the week, time of day and how early you book. So the promotion doesn't give you one fixed price. It takes about 10% off whatever that day's fare is. The fairest comparison is with the afternoon Platinum trains on the same route, which run the same 4 hours 5 minutes and are not discounted:

  • Tuesday or Wednesday (22, 29, 30 Sep): EP9121 RM93, EP9123 RM96. The 4.05pm EP9133 is RM103 and the 6.45pm EP9135 is RM106.
  • Monday or Thursday (24, 28 Sep): EP9121 RM97, EP9123 RM100, against RM108 and RM111.
  • Friday to Sunday (25 to 27 Sep): EP9121 RM100, EP9123 RM103, against RM111 and RM114.
  • Friday 18 Sep: EP9121 RM103, EP9123 RM106, against RM114 and RM117. The poster quotes RM103 and RM105, so its artwork was clearly priced on a Friday fare.
  • After the promotion, Thursday 1 Oct: EP9121 and EP9133 are both RM108. The gap is gone.

That makes the saving RM10 or RM11 per ticket on every date we checked.

Which trains are not included

We also checked the other direction. From KL Sentral to Butterworth, fares on 22 and 26 September were in line with the normal October fares on every train, so the promotion does not apply to northbound trips from KL. On the Butterworth to KL Sentral route, the 7am Platinum (EP9323), the 7.50am Gold (EP9343), the 1.05pm Express (EP9109) and both afternoon Platinum trains stayed at full price.

When we searched from Ipoh to KL Sentral, EP9121 and EP9123 did not appear at all. The only trains offered were ones that start in Ipoh. Treat this as a Butterworth deal.

Worked examples

A Penang weekend, back to work on Monday. Take EP9121 on Monday 28 September and you arrive at KL Sentral at 9.20am for RM97. The 4.05pm train on Sunday 27 September costs RM111. You save RM14, but you give up Sunday evening and have a 4.45am start.

Two people heading to KL midweek. Two tickets on EP9123 on Tuesday 29 September cost RM192. The 6.45pm EP9135 the same day costs RM212 for two, so you save RM20 and arrive at 10.35am rather than 10.50pm.

Waiting until October. The same EP9121 seat on Thursday 1 October is RM108. The 10% ends with September.

Who it suits, and who should skip it

Good for: Penang and Seberang Perai residents with a morning appointment in KL, anyone going back to the Klang Valley after a trip north, and anyone who would rather have the whole day in KL than arrive at night.

Skip it if: you are travelling from KL to Penang, you need an afternoon train, or getting to Butterworth before dawn would cost more than RM10. Also check the cheaper option first. The 7.50am Gold train EP9343 takes 15 minutes longer but costs RM83 to RM93 at full price, although it was sold out on 18, 20, 25, 26 and 27 September when we checked.

How to book

  1. Open the KTMB Mobile app, the KITS Style app or online.ktmb.com.my, or use a KTMB ticket kiosk.
  2. Search Butterworth to KL Sentral for a date between today and 30 September 2026.
  3. Choose Platinum 9121 (5.15am to 9.20am) or Platinum 9123 (6.30am to 10.35am). The lower fare shows up in the results, so there is no code to enter.
  4. Before you pay, compare it with the 4.05pm EP9133 on the same day. If the gap isn't around RM10, the promotion hasn't been applied.

Fine print that trips people up

  • Be at the station 30 minutes early. KTMB tells ETS passengers to arrive 30 minutes before departure, and its reminder this week says the departure gate closes 5 minutes before the train leaves. For EP9121, that means being in Butterworth by 4.45am.
  • "As low as" is not a flat price. Fares still change by day, and seats sell out. The Sunday evening Platinum trains were down to single-digit seats on 20 and 27 September.
  • Concession fares aren't mentioned. KTMB's Tambang Fleksi guide lists concessions for Malaysian children, senior citizens, OKU and students with a KTM i-card, but the poster doesn't say how the 10% works with them. Check the total at checkout.
  • Travel on 30 September is the last date. A ticket bought today for 1 October is at the normal fare.

KTMB is also selling extra ETS trains on KL Sentral to JB Sentral from September to December 2026, and on KL Sentral to Padang Besar in September. Those have no discount. KTMB only says that booking early gets a lower fare. Timetables and booking are on KTMB's official website.
