KTM's Electric Train Service (ETS) is the quickest way to travel between most West Coast cities without flying, and since December 2025 it has run all the way south to JB Sentral, after the Gemas to Johor Bahru electrified double track was opened (Malay Mail reported the launch on 11 December 2025). With the year-end school holidays running from 5 to 31 December for most states, this guide sets out what ETS costs and how its booking rules work. It is based on KTMB's own Terms and Conditions for ETS, KTM Intercity and Shuttle Tebrau tickets (January 2026 edition), the KITS FAQ, and live searches on KTMB's booking system, online.ktmb.com.my, on 25 October 2026.
The three types of ETS train
The train number tells you the service. Platinum trains (numbers beginning EP) stop only at the main stations. Gold trains (EG) stop at more stations and take a little longer. Express trains (EX) stop least and are the fastest: on 11 November the 11.40am Express from KL Sentral reached Butterworth in 3 hours 35 minutes, against 4 hours 5 minutes for Platinum and 4 hours 20 minutes for Gold. KTMB's ETS page still describes a Silver service between KL and Ipoh, but no Silver trains appeared on any route we searched.
Express and some other trains carry a minimum journey rule: short trips on them, such as KL Sentral to Taiping, can only be bought 24 to 72 hours before departure, so that long-distance passengers get the seats first.
What a ticket costs
ETS uses Tambang Fleksi (flexible fares). KTMB's terms list the factors that move the price: origin and destination, travel period, day of travel, departure time, type of service, route, seat selection, how far ahead you buy and where you buy. In practice the same seat costs more on weekends, in school holidays and on popular departure times. The table below shows the lowest fare KITS displayed for each route without logging in.
Concession fares
Concessions are for Malaysian citizens whose registration has been approved, and they cover the fare only, not seat charges, meals or fees.
- Senior citizens (60 and above): 50% off, 20% off in Business Class. Approval is instant when you verify your MyKad at a ticket counter or kiosk.
- Persons with disabilities (JKM OKU card): 50%, or 20% in Business Class.
- Government pensioners and spouses: 50%, or 20% in Business Class.
- Children aged 4 to 12: 50%, or 20% in Business Class. Adult fares start at 13.
- Students: 40%, not valid in Business Class. Registration costs RM33 and lasts one year; students 18 and over need a confirmation letter from their institution.
- Armed forces, police and fire personnel, and ex-servicemen: 25%, not valid in Business Class.
Online registration takes up to five working days. Senior, OKU and pensioner registrations last three years; the others last one year.
How to book
Register a free KITS account on ktmb.com.my or the KTMB Mobile app. To get citizen or concession fares online, verify your MyKad once at a counter or ticket kiosk and buy through your own account by choosing "I am travelling". You can pay by card, KTM Wallet, Touch 'n Go, Boost or DuitNow QR. Online sales close 15 minutes before departure and counters 10 minutes before. Departure gates shut 5 minutes before the train leaves, and there is no refund once they close. Travelling without a valid ticket carries a RM100 penalty plus the fare under the Land Public Transport Act 2010.
Cancelling and refunds
Cancel more than 72 hours before departure and you get 75% back; between 2 and 72 hours, 50%; less than 2 hours, nothing. Service charges, admin fees and takaful are not refunded, and refunds go to your KTM Wallet rather than your card. If KTMB cancels the train and provides no alternative transport, you get the full fare back, but you must claim within seven days. KTMB pays no compensation for delays.
How to pay less
Choose the Gold train when time is not tight: it was the cheapest option on every long route we checked. Travel midweek, and book school-holiday trips early, because the 19 December fares we saw were RM9 to RM12 higher than a mid-November Wednesday. If you are 60 or over, verify your MyKad at a counter before your first booking, because the 50% concession is the biggest discount KTMB offers.
