> Quick view: Shangri-La Tanjung Aru has launched a new Questers Family Room in its Tanjung Wing, and until 30 November 2026 it is selling stays of three nights or more at up to 20% off, with breakfast for two adults and two children under 6. Separately, the resort's Thursday Malam Kampung buffet costs RM178 nett per adult if you book ahead instead of RM200 at the door. The room deal suits families with toddlers. The buffet saving applies to anyone.

Shangri-La Tanjung Aru sits on the Tanjung Aru peninsula a few minutes from Kota Kinabalu International Airport, facing the islands of Tunku Abdul Rahman Park. Everything below comes from the offer pages on the resort's own website, which we read in full on 15 September 2026.

The Questers Family Room launch offer, step by step

Questers is Shangri-La's new family concept, and the Tanjung Aru version is the Questers Tanjung Family Terrace Room: a 53 sqm (570 sq ft) pool-view room in the Tanjung Wing. The room contains a Questers Playhouse, a small hideout with a slide decorated with Sabah and Malaysian icons (nasi lemak, a Bajau boat, the Rafflesia), a child-sized ukulele for in-room use, and a Quest that ends with a personalised keepsake strap. Adults get a soaking tub, separate shower and a Nespresso machine with four pods.

  1. Book between 15 July and 27 November 2026. You are already inside the window.
  2. Stay between 23 August and 30 November 2026, for a minimum of three nights.
  3. Pick the "Questers Family Room: Launch Offer" rate on the resort's website. The listing describes it as "stay longer and enjoy up to 20% off".
  4. What is included: daily breakfast at Café TATU for 2 adults and 2 children under 6, entry to the Water Play Area (a giant tipping bucket and three water slides), entry to the Cool Zone Kids Club, and Wi-Fi.

The website shows the "from" price in whatever currency it detects for your location. When we checked it displayed US dollars, so switch the currency to MYR or call the resort's reservations line before comparing it with other rates.

Who the Questers deal suits, and who should skip it

Book it if you have one or two children aged roughly 2 to 5. They fit the playhouse slide (recommended for children under 1 metre), they eat breakfast free under this offer, and three nights gives you time to use the water slides and kids' club without rushing.

Think twice if your children are 6 or older. They are not covered by the breakfast inclusion, and the playhouse is built for smaller kids. For that age group, look at the resort's separate Questers Family Adventure Package, which runs to the same 30 November date with a two-night minimum and is written for 2 adults and 2 children under 12. It includes a Tanjung Seaview Room, an island trip to Tunku Abdul Rahman Park with picnic lunch boxes, a guided tour of Mari Mari Cultural Village, a family cooking class, a blowpipe lesson, Wau kite painting and one dinner at Coco Joe's Bar and Grill.

Skip it if you only have one or two nights. The launch offer does not apply below three.

Malam Kampung Buffet Dinner: pre-book to save

Every Thursday from 6pm to 9:30pm, the resort sets up an outdoor buffet on Kinabalu Field. The page lists whole roast lamb, slipper lobster, prawns, mussels, honey sesame chicken wings, barbecue and Sabahan salads. The entertainment is the Magunatip, the Murut bamboo dance, followed by a fire show. Children get a corner with a magic show, a balloon artist and a bouncy castle. If it rains, dinner moves indoors to Café TATU.

  • Adult: RM178 nett pre-booked, RM200 nett walk-in
  • Child (7 to 11): RM89 nett pre-booked, RM100 nett walk-in

Shangri-La Circle members can also pay with points: 668 points per pre-booked adult or 334 per child. The resort notes that points values are estimates and change with the day's rate.

Worked examples

A couple on a Thursday night. Pre-booked: 2 x RM178 = RM356. Walk-in: 2 x RM200 = RM400. One phone call saves RM44.

Two adults and two children aged 8 and 10. Pre-booked: 2 x RM178 + 2 x RM89 = RM534. Walk-in: RM600. Saving: RM66.

A group of six adults. Pre-booked RM1,068 against RM1,200 at the door, a saving of RM132, about one extra seat's worth.

Families with toddlers. The published rates stop at age 7. The page says nothing about children under 7, so ask whether they eat free when you book. Don't assume the resort's in-house children's meal plan applies: that plan is written for buffets at the all-day dining outlets, and Malam Kampung is a special event on the field.

If you are travelling before 30 September

A third offer, Truly Malaysia, Truly Tanjung Aru, is on its last two weeks: stays must end by 30 September 2026. It includes breakfast for 2 adults and 2 children under 6, a return boat trip to Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park for the same four people, a MYR100 dining credit per stay at the restaurants and bars (not in-room dining), parking, and a 23-hour stay with check-in at 2pm and check-out at 1pm. If you book it, ask whether the dining credit can go towards a Thursday Malam Kampung dinner. The page does not rule the buffet in or out.

Fine print that trips people up

  • Three nights minimum on the Questers launch offer, and the discount is "up to" 20%. The page does not publish tiers, so compare against the standard rate for your dates.
  • Breakfast covers children under 6 only on both the Questers and Truly Malaysia offers.
  • The playhouse slide is recommended for children below 1 metre. The ukulele stays in the room.
  • Walk-in buffet prices are RM22 higher per adult. Book by calling (60 88) 327 868 or through the resort's Book A Table link.
  • Rain moves Malam Kampung indoors, so the field setting is not guaranteed.
  • The buffet page carries no end date. It is a standing Thursday event, so confirm it is running on your date when you call.
  • Malaysia Day (16 September) falls on a Wednesday, so it does not change the Thursday buffet schedule.
  • Tourism Tax of RM10 per room per night applies to non-Malaysian guests and is charged separately.

All three offers are listed on Shangri-La Tanjung Aru's offers page.
