> Quick view: Village Grocer opens at 118 Mall on Sunday 1 November 2026, from 11.18am. A RM100 receipt that day gets a RM60 voucher angpao (first 1,000 customers), a RM118 receipt with a Bites membership gets a 118-only foldable food-print bag, and about 50 lines are Buy 1 Free 1 for that day only. After opening day, dated freebies land on 5, 6, 12 and 19 November, and catalogue prices hold until 6 December.
118 Mall is the retail podium at the base of Merdeka 118, and Village Grocer is one of its first named tenants. Opening day is the busiest and best-value day, but the RM60 angpao is designed to pull you back four more times in November. Everything below comes from Village Grocer's own opening page and its eight-page 118 Mall opening e-mailer, read on 29 October 2026.
How the opening day works, step by step
- Get there from 11.18am on 1 November. That is the published opening time for the special. Village Grocer outlets normally trade 10am to 10pm daily. The grocer has not published a unit number inside the mall.
- Join Bites before you queue, if you are not already a member. It is free in the Bites app. The foldable bag is redeemed by showing your Bites membership with the original receipt; foreign visitors can show a passport instead.
- Pay for at least RM100 on one receipt. Take the receipt to the voucher angpao redemption counter. The angpao holds four vouchers: two RM10 off a RM50 spend and two RM20 off a RM100 spend. Limited to the first 1,000 customers.
- Push the same receipt to RM118 and the Bites bag comes too (first 1,000 units, one per customer). Bag and pouch designs are random.
- Hit RM300 on one receipt and you can also claim a fruit and vegetable gift bag (50 a day).
The RM60 angpao: read the dates
This is the part most shoppers will misread. Each voucher works in one specific week only, and only one voucher per receipt:
- Week 1: RM10 off RM50, 2 to 8 November
- Week 2: RM10 off RM50, 9 to 15 November
- Week 3: RM20 off RM100, 16 to 22 November
- Week 4: RM20 off RM100, 23 to 29 November
So to collect the full RM60 you need four separate trips that spend at least RM300 between them (RM50 + RM50 + RM100 + RM100). That is a 20% saving on those four shops, which is very good for a supermarket, but only if 118 Mall is somewhere you already pass every week. Vouchers do not work on concessionaire counters, tobacco or infant milk, and they are valid at Village Grocer 118 Mall only.
Worth buying on the 1 November Buy 1 Free 1 list
The e-mailer's "1 Day Special, Bumper Bonanza" pages carry roughly 50 lines. The price shown is what you pay for the pair. Picks with the most value:
- Kanika snow crab legs 200g, RM20.25, Buy 1 Free 1
- Sumo Calrose rice 2kg, RM22.75, Buy 1 Free 1
- Excelso coffee beans or ground 200g, RM33.90, buy any 1 free 1
- Hero 99 laundry capsules 50s, RM21.90, Buy 1 Free 1
- New Zealand Envy apple, RM7.00 a piece, Buy 1 Free 1
- Naturel extra virgin olive oil 750ml, RM37.99 with a free 250ml light olive oil
- Dole pineapple chunks 567g, RM7.90, Buy 1 Free 1 (first 120 customers)
- Whole Norwegian Atlantic salmon 3-5kg, RM53.99/kg (a price, not a free item)
In the non-halal section, Tong Bao Korean pork luncheon meat 340g is RM13.90 Buy 1 Free 1 on 1 November only.
Worked example. A Bites member buys the crab legs, rice, coffee, Hero 99 capsules and the Naturel olive oil: RM136.79 on one receipt. That clears both thresholds, so they leave with nine packs of groceries (four of them free), a free 250ml olive oil, the foldable bag, and the RM60 angpao for later.
Dated freebies after opening day
Each one needs a single receipt, and each is a one-day offer on that date:
- 5 November: Chiaverini jam 320g at RM100 (100 units)
- 6 November: a whole 3-4kg Norwegian Atlantic salmon at RM350 spent on fresh seafood only (20 units, redeemed at the fresh seafood counter)
- 12 November: Mama Vege green tomyam bean vermicelli 78g at RM100 (200 a day)
- 19 November: HY Grain Crispy Roll 50g at RM100 (200 a day)
The 6 November salmon is the biggest single gift on the list. At the opening-day price of RM53.99/kg, a 3kg fish is worth about RM160. It only makes sense if you were already buying RM350 of seafood, for a family dinner or a Deepavali gathering.
Prices that last to 6 December
The rest of the catalogue runs 1 November to 6 December: Savoir kampung eggs 15s RM8.99, Nongshim Shin Ramyun multipack RM18.99, Cap Rambutan Pusa King 1121 rice 2kg RM18.99, Vinda toilet roll 16s RM28.89, Chobani Fit 160g two for RM20.99, and Lotte Pepero any three for RM10. Fresh produce changes halfway: US green seedless grapes are RM30.99/kg from 1 to 18 November, and Korean Shine Muscat 450g is RM26.99 from 19 November to 6 December.
From 2 November to 31 December, the foldable bag offer continues at a higher RM180 single-receipt threshold (5,000 units). There is also a 118 Mall-only Menara Merdeka canvas bag for RM24.90 or 2,490 Bites points. Concessionaire counters inside the store include Baaji's, Eu Yan Sang, I Love KL, Kaiia Kanteen and Pagoda Kingdom, which has 11.8% off as its own launch special to 6 December.
Who it suits, and who should skip it
Go if you live or work around Merdeka, Pudu, Chinatown or Bukit Bintang, or ride the MRT Kajang line, whose Merdeka station connects to the mall. You can realistically come back weekly and use all four vouchers.
Skip the trip if you live in Petaling Jaya or further out. The RM60 angpao is worth nothing unless you return within the voucher weeks, and the chain-wide Hot Picks promo (22 October to 8 November) is already running at your nearest Village Grocer.
Expect crowds on 1 November. A new mall under the country's tallest tower opening on a Sunday will draw sightseers. The 1,000-unit caps on the angpao and the bag may go well before evening.
The mall opens the same day
Village Grocer is not opening alone. 118 Mall itself is now listed to open on 1 November 2026, after earlier announcements pointing to August, with more than 300 stores planned across the podium at the foot of Merdeka 118, next to Stadium Merdeka and Stadium Negara and a walk from Petaling Street. Expect some units to still be hoarded up on day one, as is normal for a new mall. As of 30 October, the mall had not published its own trading hours or parking rates, so plan around Village Grocer's 11.18am start and take the MRT if you can. Village Grocer's opening page was last updated on 29 October and its offers are unchanged.
Fine print that trips people up
- One receipt, not a combined total. Two RM60 receipts do not make a RM118 bag claim.
- The Bites scan matters. No membership and no passport means no bag.
- "While stocks last" is on every freebie, and the e-mailer says pictures are for illustration only.
- Non-halal items are in a separate section, as at other Village Grocer stores.
Full details are on Village Grocer's 118 Mall opening page.
