Penang has no shortage of badminton halls, and their headline prices sit close together: every hall we could verify charges between RM14 and RM30 an hour per court. What actually moves your bill is when the evening rate starts. One hall switches at 5pm, four at 6pm, two at 7pm, and the gap between a 6pm booking and a 7pm booking can be RM4 to RM6 an hour at the same venue.

We read every rate below on 9 October 2026 from the live "Opening hours & Pricing" panel on each hall's own Courtsite booking page, not the summary text that the page loads first. That distinction matters: at three halls the preloaded text was out of date, and one hall's preloaded weekday rate was RM5 higher than its live card. Rates move, so check the booking screen before you pay.

How to choose a court in Penang

Book by the hour you play, not the cheapest number. A Tuesday 6pm game costs RM16 an hour at Bayan Lepas, RM20 at Permata and RM24 at Bukit Gelugor. A Tuesday 10am game costs RM14 at Permata and RM24 at Bukit Gelugor. The ranking flips depending on the slot.

Watch for two-hour minimums. Several halls sell evenings in fixed two-hour blocks: Bukit Dumbar after 5pm and at weekends, Bayan Lepas from 7pm, and CHK Arena from 8pm. So the real price of a night game there is RM40 to RM48, not the hourly figure.

Read the refund rule before you pay. Every hall in this list says bookings are non-refundable. The four halls run by Sportify Capital (Taman Harapan, Bayan Lepas, CHK Arena and Nibong Tebal) and Permata allow a change with 48 hours' notice. Penang Badminton Academy allows no rescheduling at all.

School halls are evening-only. SMJK Chung Hwa Confucian opens its courts to the public only from 7pm and for recreational play. They are cheap, but you cannot book a Saturday morning there.

Ask about the floor and the air. None of the booking pages states the court surface or confirms air-conditioning. The photos show mat courts at most halls. Penang evenings are humid, so if aircond matters, call before booking a long session.

What a game actually costs

For a typical two-hour weekday evening doubles booking, split four ways:

  • SMJK Chung Hwa Confucian (from 7pm): RM30, about RM7.50 each
  • Bayan Lepas, 5pm to 7pm: RM32, RM8 each
  • Permata, Taman Harapan, CHK Arena or Nibong Tebal (from 6pm): RM40, RM10 each
  • Bukit Dumbar (from 5pm): RM48, RM12 each
  • Penang Badminton Academy (from 7pm): RM60, RM15 each

For a weekly group, the gap between the cheapest and the dearest is RM30 a session, or about RM1,560 over a year. But the halls are spread from the island's centre to Seberang Perai Selatan, so travel time often decides it.

How to pick

  • Weekday mornings or lunchtime: Permata at RM14, the lowest daytime rate we found.
  • Weekday nights on the island: SMJK Chung Hwa Confucian at RM15, if you can play from 7pm.
  • Straight after work in the south: Bayan Lepas, which keeps RM16 until 7pm.
  • Weekends on the mainland: CHK Arena's RM30 two-hour block, until 31 December 2026.
  • A bigger, newer hall: Nibong Tebal Arena or Permata, both with showers and a pro shop.
  • The association's own courts: Bukit Dumbar, with 9 courts and RM15 weekday daytime play.
