Pickleball has gone from a few school-hall nets to a proper industry in Penang in about two years. The island now has purpose-built halls on Gurney Drive, Jalan Burma and Jelutong, an air-conditioned venue inside a shopping mall, outdoor courts in Tanjung Tokong and on Jalan Macalister, and a cluster of indoor centres around Bukit Mertajam on the mainland. Almost all of them publish their rates on a booking platform, which makes Penang one of the easier places in Malaysia to compare prices properly.

We read the live rate cards of eight venues on 13 October 2026: on Sports We Play for most island venues, AFA (playsportstogether.com) for PickleGen, and Courtsite for Picker Pickle in Juru. Where a platform's summary price disagreed with its live pricing window, we used the live window.

How to choose a pickleball court in Penang

Look at the hour, not the headline. Nearly every venue has a step at 5pm or 6pm. On weekdays the same court at GAME ON PICKLE is RM45 at 4pm and RM70 at 5pm. If you can play before work, at lunch or straight after a 4pm finish, you save about a third.

Check the weekend line. Penang's rate cards do not all follow the "weekends cost more" rule. GAME ON PICKLE charges RM45 all day on Saturday and Sunday, G.O.A.T Jelutong RM55, and Picker Pickle RM30. All three are cheaper than their own weekday evening rates. Pickle By The Sea, PickleGen and Picklesky go the other way and charge their evening rate all weekend.

Indoor, covered or outdoor. "Indoor" in Penang usually means a roofed hall with fans, not air-conditioning. Picklesky in Sunshine Central is the air-conditioned option in this list. Pickle Island and WIRASPORTS are open-air, which is pleasant at 7am and at night but hard work at 2pm, and rain can stop play.

Court tiers. Several venues price courts differently in the same building: Grandstand or VIP courts with more run-off and spectator space, standard courts, and training courts. For a casual game the standard tier is fine, and the gap can be RM15 to RM50 an hour.

Read the small print. PickleGen allows rescheduling but no refunds. Picker Pickle's prices exclude 6% SST, and it is the only venue here that says so on its rate card. Paddle rental runs from RM3 (Pickle Island) to RM5-10 (PickleGen), so bring your own if you play weekly.

How to pick

  • Lowest cost on the island: Pickle Island before 6pm, RM20 an hour, if you are happy outdoors.
  • Lowest cost indoors: Picker Pickle in Juru on weekday daytimes (RM25 plus SST) or its RM30 weekends; on the island, GAME ON PICKLE's RM45 weekends.
  • Air-conditioning: Picklesky, from RM30 for the training court on weekdays before 6pm.
  • Groups and tournaments: Pickle By The Sea has 16 courts and has hosted the APP Asia Penang Open; G.O.A.T Jelutong has 12.
  • Coaching: WIRASPORTS publishes private coaching at RM180 an hour, or RM1,650 for ten sessions.
  • Bayan Lepas and the south: PickleGen at Giant Bayan Baru, which also rents a ball machine at RM50 an hour.

Penang's next public holiday is Deepavali on Sunday 8 November 2026, with Monday 9 November as the state's replacement holiday. Venues that list a public holiday rate (Pickle By The Sea, PickleGen, Picklesky, WIRASPORTS) will charge it on both days, and Christmas Day, Friday 25 December, is the one after that.
