What Changed When We Re-Checked This List

We re-opened every listing on this page on 8 September 2026 — trading status, the full seven-day hours table rather than the one-line summary Google shows by default, and what diners report spending. Two entries did not survive.

Ghibli Coffee has closed. On 23 June 2026 the café posted its own announcement on Facebook, headed "Babak Terakhir di Ghibli Coffee" — the final chapter — confirming that 30 June 2026 would be its last day of operation after seven years. Google Maps still shows the Jalan Tok Guru listing as open with a full hours table, which is why it keeps appearing on other Kota Bharu café lists. It is gone, and we have removed it.

Kopi Mesin is no longer a chain. We described it as running four outlets. Google Maps now marks Kopi Mesin Kebun Sultan (Wisma Mizah, Jalan Kebun Sultan) and Kopi Mesin Wakaf Che Yeh (Taman Damai Perdana, Jalan Kuala Krai) as permanently closed, no Lundang listing exists, and the brand's own Facebook page has been renamed "Kopi Mesin | Kubang Kerian" and lists only the Kubang Kerian address. One shop, not four.

That leaves seven cafés, all confirmed trading.

Kota Bharu Has A Café Scene Beyond Nasi Kerabu

Most write-ups of Kota Bharu food stop at the heritage dishes — nasi kerabu, nasi dagang, ayam percik, laksam, akok — sold at markets and stalls that have run for decades. That reputation is well earned, but it also means Kota Bharu's newer café culture rarely gets mentioned. Over the past decade a small but real cluster of specialty coffee bars, a working roastery and dessert-forward cafés has grown up around the town centre, Kubang Kerian and the roads leading out toward the airport.

Where Kelantan's "Third Wave" Coffee Actually Started

The Bold Lab, which opened in Taman Kenangan in February 2015, is generally credited as Kota Bharu's first third-wave café — the place that introduced pour-over, AeroPress and siphon brewing to a town where kopi-O and teh tarik had long ruled. Its own menu still carries the line "Serving you since 2015". That opening seeded the scene: KB Brewster and Kopi Mesin followed over the next few years, and eventually a dedicated roastery, Drum & Desk, opened inside a co-working space in Taman Sari — still the only café in Kota Bharu roasting its own beans on site, a claim its own Facebook page makes in the same words.

What A Kota Bharu Café Actually Costs

Only one of the seven publishes a full price list. The Bold Lab puts its whole menu online, and it is the cheapest way to calibrate the rest of the town:

  • All-day breakfast RM19 to RM28 (Eggie Pagi RM19, Salsaavo Toast RM22, Sunrise Pancakes RM23, Bold Breakfast RM25, Bold Breakfast 2.0 RM28)
  • Pasta RM19 to RM28, rice bowls RM23 to RM26, burgers RM24 to RM28
  • Mains RM25 to RM35 (fish and chips RM25, grilled chicken chop RM28, chimichurri salmon RM32, Australian lamb shoulder RM35)
  • Affogato RM13, matchafogato RM14, ice cream parfait RM15 (double scoop +RM6), mocktails RM17 to RM19
  • Whole cakes for collection or delivery RM40 to RM160 — but note the store's own two conditions: order at least two days in advance, and delivery is within Kota Bharu only

For the rest, the usable number is the spend band Google Maps collects from diners. Read as reported figures rather than menu prices, they split the list cleanly in two: Kopi Mesin (RM1–20, from 51 reports) and KB Brewster (RM1–20, from 76 reports) are the everyday-price end, while The Bold Lab (RM20–40, 83 reports), Drum & Desk (RM20–40, 82 reports), Tiny Elephant (RM20–40, 117 reports) and Leaven at the airport (RM20–40, 40 reports) sit a tier up. Yoohoo publishes no band.

Plan Around Kelantan's Friday–Saturday Weekend

Kelantan does not follow the Saturday–Sunday weekend used in most of Malaysia. The state weekend falls on Friday and Saturday, and Sunday is a normal working day. What that means in practice is narrower than the general advice usually given, and we checked it café by café:

  • Kopi Mesin is closed all day Friday on its Google listing — the one full rest day among the seven, and it lands on the day visitors are most likely to have free.
  • KB Brewster splits its Friday for prayers: it shows a short noon to 12.30pm window, closes, then reopens 2.15pm to 11pm, against 8am to 11pm the rest of the week. This is not "extended Friday hours" as we previously wrote — it is a later start and a midday break.
  • The Bold Lab (10am–11pm), Drum & Desk (9am–7pm) and Tiny Elephant (9.30am–11pm) run the same hours seven days a week, Friday included.
  • Yoohoo does not open before noon on any day — 12pm to 10pm, extended to 11pm on Thursdays and Fridays. It is an evening plan, not a brunch one.
  • Leaven at the airport publishes no hours at all. Its Google listing is unclaimed, and its Facebook page has not posted since 1 January 2025, so treat it as a stop that exists rather than one you can time a trip around.

The practical takeaway: a Friday morning café run in Kota Bharu is the one plan that can genuinely fail. Before noon on a Friday, The Bold Lab, Drum & Desk and Tiny Elephant are your three safe options. After 2.30pm on a Friday everything except Kopi Mesin is open.

Getting Around

These cafés sit in four separate pockets: the town centre and Taman Kenangan, Kubang Kerian near the hospital and university belt, Taman Sari, and the airport road toward Pengkalan Chepa. None are within comfortable walking distance of each other, so a rental car or Grab is the practical way to string several together in a day. Drum & Desk closes earliest at 7pm, so put it first; The Bold Lab, KB Brewster and Tiny Elephant all run to 11pm and are the natural late stops.

How To Pick

  • Serious coffee: The Bold Lab for hand brews, Drum & Desk if you want beans roasted on the premises. Drum & Desk also sells daily, weekly and monthly coworking passes, which makes it the one to pick if you are working rather than visiting.
  • Cheapest sit-down: Kopi Mesin or KB Brewster, both in the RM1–20 reported band. KB Brewster is the higher-rated of the two at 4.4 from 965 Google reviews, and its own Facebook page said on 7 September 2026 that it trades 8am to midnight — later than the 11pm still shown on Google.
  • Dessert first: Yoohoo for kakigori and shaved ice, Tiny Elephant for soft serve. Tiny Elephant is the only one here with a drive-through; Yoohoo is the only one that states it is Muslim-friendly on its own page.
  • Skip unless you are already there: Leaven. At 3.2 from 74 Google reviews it is by some distance the weakest-rated entry on this list, and our earlier line about it being a step up from typical airport catering is not supported by what reviewers actually say. It is convenient, not good.
