We read seven Johor Bahru car rental operators' own pages on 4 November 2026. An Axia runs from RM99 to RM135 a day for a short rental, and the RM52.93 headline needs 23 days or more. Three ban Singapore outright, and one allows it only on non-economy cars with approval.
Johor Bahru is full of car rental ads quoting RM50-something a day. Most of them are monthly prices. On 4 November 2026 we read the rate pages and terms of seven operators, in their own words, and threw out marketplaces and domains that have gone dead.
Two things make JB different from other Malaysian rental markets. Singaporeans walk across and rent here, and many assume the car can come back with them. Usually it can't. And the operators' pages often disagree with themselves, so we say so where they do.
All rates below are as published, usually undated, and exclude weekend or festive surcharges, which no operator prices in public. Cards first, then the arithmetic.
"From RM52.93" is a monthly price
The headline on a JB rental site is nearly always the longest bracket. Drivor's page title says from RM60, but that's a long-rental rate. Gem's "from RM52.93" starts on day 23.
Those brackets also make some odd sums, because the whole rental drops to the lower rate:
- Gem, Axia: 14 days cost RM1,624 but 15 days cost RM1,290, so the extra day saves RM334. 22 days cost RM1,892 and 23 days cost RM1,217, which saves RM675.
- Drivor, Axia: 16 days cost RM1,440 and 17 days cost RM1,650, so here the extra day costs RM210. Then 30 days cost RM1,800 and 31 days RM1,767.
If your dates are near an edge, price both. For a full 30 days, an Axia is RM1,588 at Gem, RM1,800 at Drivor and Causeway, and RM2,228 at Travelex. A Saga-class at Hawk's feed rate is RM3,300.
What three days really costs
Here's a three-day rental at the cheapest car, bought up to an excess of RM2,500 or less where the operator publishes one:
- Drivor Axia: RM390, RM2,500 excess included
- Hawk Saga-class: RM435 with RM35-a-day protection, zero excess on its FAQ's terms, though its feed shows otherwise
- Oscar Axia: RM450 with unlimited mileage, RM1,500 excess
- Gem Axia: RM450, RM1,000 to RM1,500 excess if the Axia is in the lowest group, plus delivery of RM50 to RM140
- Causeway Axia: RM480 on Premium with RM2,500 excess, or RM600 on Platinum with zero
Travelex would come in lower, at RM342 if the Axia is Group A and RM15 a day is what you pay, but we couldn't capture the reduced excess. JohorBook's RM405 can't be ranked until you see its excess during booking. Add RM30 to Causeway if the RM130 post is the current one.
Mileage caps matter on a Penang run
JB to Penang and back is roughly 1,400km by our estimate. Over three days, that's RM0 extra at Causeway and JohorBook, RM45 for Oscar's unlimited package on an Axia, RM100 at Drivor, RM250 at Gem, and RM400 at Travelex if its daily cap applies. For a weekend around Johor, the caps won't touch you. Drivor's own FAQ also excludes cars leaving Johor from its unlimited mileage, so ask.
Singapore: assume no
Three operators ban it flatly, one says "typically" no, and two are silent. The only route we found in writing is Hawk's, and that isn't for economy cars. Crossing without approval isn't a small risk. If you have an accident there, you shouldn't assume your cover applies. If you're coming from Singapore, plan to leave the car on this side. The VEP and Autopass guide explains what a Malaysian-registered car needs at the border if you do get approval.
Before you hand over your card
- Photograph every panel at pickup, with the odometer and fuel gauge.
- Ask for the excess figure and the deposit in writing, since several of these pages contradict themselves.
- Ask how festive and weekend dates change the rate. Causeway says they cost more, and no one prints by how much.
- Ask about summons fees. Gem, for one, charges a minimum RM300 processing charge per traffic summons on top of the fine.
- Check the Senai fee if you're flying in. Drivor's banner shows free delivery there, undated, and Hawk's engine listed no Senai branch.
How to choose
For a walk-across weekend, Causeway's JB Sentral pickup and unlimited mileage are hard to beat if you take a lower-excess plan. For a month, Gem's RM52.93 is the number to beat, within its 300km daily cap. For a family, JohorBook prices the MPVs clearly, and Gem and Travelex list a Vellfire. For a long drive north, take unlimited mileage from Causeway, JohorBook or Oscar. For the lowest short-rental rate, Travelex is RM99 on paper, but phone first.
