Johor Bahru's family-attraction scene is anchored by LEGOLAND Malaysia Resort, but the city has quietly built up a second tier of options over the past few years — a nearly century-old zoo that just added a night safari, a free waterfront park with giant climbable animal structures, and several mall-based indoor playgrounds that make good rainy-day or post-immigration-queue stops for families crossing the Causeway.

This list sticks to spots we could independently verify are real, currently open and have their own bookable listing or official page as of 2026 — no invented ticket prices, and nothing that's quietly closed down (Puteri Harbour's old Hello Kitty Town and Thomas Town, for instance, shut for good at the end of 2019, so they're deliberately left off).

Most of these cluster around two zones: Iskandar Puteri (LEGOLAND, Puteri Harbour, Sunway Big Box) roughly 25-30 minutes from the JB city centre and the Woodlands/Tuas checkpoints, and central JB town (Johor Zoo, KSL City Mall, Austin Heights), closer to the Causeway. Budget is the second filter, and the spread is unusually wide. Johor Zoo charges RM2 for adults and RM1 for children on its listed day pricing; Danga Park is free for Malaysians who bring MyKad or MyKid; Danga Bay Theme Park is free to enter and you pay per ride. At the other end, LEGOLAND day tickets start from RM69 booked online, and Austin Heights day passes have been listed from around RM70 per person. A JB family trip can cost almost nothing or a few hundred ringgit depending purely on which two or three of these you pick.

Weather and timing matter more than people expect. JB gets heavy afternoon downpours year-round, so pair each outdoor attraction with an indoor backup — KSL's Funtopia, Sunway Big Box and the GSC Play Park all work as rain plans. Evening is genuinely the best slot for two of these: Johor Zoo's night operations run Friday to Sunday plus public and school holidays, and Danga Park reopens at 8pm and runs to 11pm with its light displays on.

How we'd build a two-day trip

Day one, Iskandar Puteri side: LEGOLAND from opening through mid-afternoon, then a slow evening at Puteri Harbour's marina or at Sunway Big Box for dinner and indoor play. Day two, city side: Johor Zoo when it opens at 9am, KSL City Mall through the hottest part of the afternoon, then Danga Park after its 8pm reopening for the night lights. That covers five of the seven without doubling back across the city — and if you only have one day, Iskandar Puteri gives you the bigger single-ticket day out while the city side gives you the cheaper one.

What a JB family day actually costs

These worked examples use a family of two adults and two children aged 7 and 4, and only prices published by the operators or reported in 2026:

Free-to-cheap city day (Malaysians): Johor Zoo by day at RM2 per adult and RM1 for the 7-year-old (the 4-year-old is free) comes to RM5. Danga Park after 8pm is free with MyKad/MyKid. A few Danga Bay fun-fair rides add roughly RM10–RM20, so the whole day costs less than RM30 before food and parking.
The same evening as foreign visitors: Danga Park charges passport holders RM20 per adult and RM10 per child aged 5–12, so the two adults and the 7-year-old pay RM50. Johor Zoo's night session was reported at RM30 per foreign visitor at its April 2026 launch.
Rainy afternoon at Sunway Big Box: two kids on EnerG X Park all-day passes on a Saturday cost RM68 × 2 plus RM6 × 2 for grip socks, which is RM148. The same visit on a Tuesday is RM128. Parents who only watch don't need a pass.

The spread is the point: the same family can spend RM5 or RM352 in Johor Bahru depending on which attraction they choose. If you're crossing from Singapore, the free-with-MyKad deals at Danga Park and Johor Zoo's low local rates don't apply to you, and LEGOLAND and EnerG X Park are closer to what you'd expect to pay at home.

Johor Zoo (Zoo Johor) — Johor Bahru city centre

Established in 1928 by the late Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Abu Bakar, Johor Zoo is the oldest zoo in Malaysia and home to 216 species. In 2026 it added a night zoo component, backed by around RM5 million in upgrades, with glowing walking trails and live feeding shows extending the visit into the evening. KSL City Mall — Funtopia & Dinosaur Alive Water Theme Park

KSL City Mall in JB town packs in two separate kids' attractions. Funtopia, at unit L1-96 on Level 1, is an indoor playground with slides, a trampoline, a carousel and a dress-up costume corner, open daily 10am to 10pm. It charges by the hour — online listings put it at about RM38 an hour for children aged 2 and up and RM20 for under-2s, with one accompanying adult free per child ticket — but those published rates are a couple of years old, so confirm at the counter. On the Level 7 rooftop, the Dinosaur Alive Water Theme Park (branded as KSL Water Park) is one of the larger Jurassic-themed indoor-outdoor water parks in JB, with slides up to about 10 feet, a flying fox, climbing zones, a race track for ride-on toys, and ball pit/sandpit play. An April 2026 guide lists it as open daily 9am to 7pm with entry at RM20 per person, paid at the KSL Hotel & Resort counter (+607-288 2999).

Sunway Big Box Retail Park — Iskandar Puteri

An open-air retail park in Sunway City Iskandar Puteri (near LEGOLAND) built on a minimalist warehouse concept — 24 acres, over 100 shops across two floors and 2,000 parking bays — and set up with young families in mind: a ground-floor kids' playground, baby-changing and nursing rooms, and two dedicated attractions. EnerG X Park (lot FF-L-04, first floor, open 10am to 10pm daily) is an indoor extreme-sports park with more than a dozen activities — trampolines, climbing walls, skate ramps, obstacle courses and electric go-karts. Adults and kids pay the same: an all-day pass is RM58 Monday to Thursday and RM68 on Fridays, weekends, public and school holidays, with after-7pm passes at RM48 and RM58; grip socks (RM6) are compulsory and go-karts cost extra. GSC Play Park, on Level 1, is billed as Malaysia's first cinema built for kids: eight halls plus the Popcorn Tower Slide, its own playground, nursery rooms and kids' washrooms. A BookXcess outlet on site also has a shoes-off children's reading nook. The shaded walkways make it a rare mall-scale option you can still use in the rain.

Austin Heights Water & Adventure Park — Taman Mount Austin

At 71 Jalan Austin Heights 8/1 in Taman Mount Austin, this is really four parks on one ticketed site. The Water Park has slides and splash pools including a wave pool and the Supersurf attraction; the Adventure Park is built around what the operator advertises as the longest indoor suspension rope course in Malaysia, spanning 7 course routes and 51 obstacle types; the Sports & Leisure Park adds an ice-skating rink, go-kart racing and a trampoline park; and the Discovery Park rounds it out. Day passes have been listed from around RM70 per person, with toddler rates from about RM12. It's generally open 10am to 6pm, but hours and operating days shift around public holidays and school breaks, so check the official site before driving out — this is the one attraction on this list where reported opening days vary between sources.

Danga Bay — Danga Park & Danga Bay Theme Park

Danga Bay is JB's largest waterfront recreational stretch, and its headline addition is Danga Park, which opened on 30 May 2026 and is run by Majlis Bandaraya Johor Bahru (MBJB). It has themed playgrounds, dry water-play zones, an elevated walkway of around 700m and giant climbable tiger- and octopus-shaped structures, plus illuminated night displays — and it's a 10-15 minute drive from the checkpoint. Per MBJB, it operates daily 7.30am to 11pm, closing temporarily from 6.30pm to 8pm, with last entry at 6pm for the day session and 10.30pm at night. Entry is free for Malaysians, who must bring MyKad or MyKid for verification at the main gate; foreign passport holders pay RM20 for adults and RM10 for children aged 5-12. Capacity is capped at 1,500 visitors at a time, so avoid peak evenings if you're bringing small children. It has been busy: The Star reported 290,408 visitors by 31 July 2026, and in September 2026 the park won the World Urban Parks Awards' New Park Project category for the Asia-Pacific region. Next door is the older, separately-run Danga Bay Theme Park, a free-entry evening fun fair with a balloon Ferris wheel, carousel and bumper cars charged per ride (roughly RM2 to RM10 each). Puteri Harbour Waterfront & Family Cruise — Iskandar Puteri

With Puteri Harbour's old Hello Kitty Town and Thomas Town theme parks both permanently closed since the end of 2019, the waterfront itself is now the draw: a marina and promenade with open lawns and scenic sea views that suit strolls, picnics and playtime. Several operators, including the Brooklyn Cruise, run family-friendly boat tours from the marina — the Brooklyn's is a roughly 45-minute cruise sailing daily from around 3pm to 10pm — giving younger kids a low-key water outing without a theme-park ticket.
