Music School and Piano Lesson Fees in KL and the Klang Valley 2026: What Six Schools Charge

We read six KL and Klang Valley music schools' own fee pages on 4 November 2026. A weekly beginner piano lesson runs from RM140 to RM320 a month, and the first year with one ABRSM Grade 1 exam comes to about RM2,119 to RM4,279. The gap is mostly teacher grade and how you pay.

Most KL music schools still ask you to WhatsApp for a fee. A handful publish theirs, and those are the ones here. On 4 November 2026 we read each school's own page, took out the aggregators and tutor directories, and worked out what a beginner would actually pay in the first year.

This list has six schools: four that publish a usable fee table for a beginner, one chain that prints "from" prices for teens and adults, and one small Setapak studio whose page is older and needs a phone call. Unless we say otherwise, the fee pages carry no date, so confirm before you pay. Promos are listed only where the school itself shows them, and none shows an end date.

The analysis, including the first-year cost for each school, is below the cards.

Neo Dynasty Academy

The most detailed fee table here, and the only one that shows how a fee is built. Piano is one-on-one, four sessions a month: Beginner RM165 (30 minutes of practical at RM150 plus 15 minutes of theory at RM15), Grade 1 RM200, Grade 3 RM245, Grade 5 RM335 and Grade 8 RM570 (45 minutes of practical plus 30 of theory). Theory is included, so a beginner gets 45 minutes a week. Registration is RM30, plus advance fees from RM165; the page doesn't say whether those are credited back, so ask. It prepares students for ABRSM, Trinity and Rockschool. Five branches: Klang (Jalan Bayu Tinggi 7), Setia Alam, Kota Kemuning, Puchong and Sri Damansara. Weekdays are 2pm to 10pm (Klang from 10am), weekends 9am to 7pm. Minimum age and make-up rules aren't published.

Yamaha Music School Malaysia

The name most parents know, but the published price only covers part of the picture. Its Piano Fundamental course for ages 15 and up is from RM182 a month in a group or from RM204 for individual lessons, leading to Yamaha's own pop piano grades. The Yamaha Piano Course for children from age 8 (30 minutes) shows no price, and we couldn't read a price for younger children's courses. Lessons per month aren't stated either. "From" suggests the fee varies by school, and we could not get KL or Selangor branch addresses from its locator, so ask the nearest school for its fee sheet, book costs and exam route before comparing it with the table below.

Dream World Music, Setapak

The lowest printed fee, and the weakest paper trail, so phone first. Its piano page lists RM160 a month, or RM140 with a promo code, plus a one-month deposit, with the RM50 registration and RM25 monthly admin fees shown as waived. Beginners get 30 minutes a week with theory included; 45, 60 and 75 minutes apply at higher levels, with no price shown for each. Its adult page says RM130, which doesn't match, and the Little Mozart group class (up to six children, 60 minutes) is RM100 a month plus a RM100 deposit. It offers ABRSM and Trinity, for children from age 4 and adults, with a free trial. It has a Google Maps listing at Diamond Square, Jalan Semarak Api 2, but the site's images date from 2018 to 2022 and we saw no recent Facebook post.

What the first year really costs

Monthly fees hide the bill, so here is one weekly 30-minute beginner on piano for 12 months, plus one ABRSM Grade 1 practical exam at RM439. Registration is added where a school publishes it. Books aren't, because no school prints them.

  • Dream World: RM2,119 with the promo code, RM2,359 at list price
  • Neo Dynasty: RM2,449 (RM30 + 12 x RM165 + RM439)
  • Capen, 12-month prepaid: RM2,839
  • Yamaha, ages 15 and up, "from" price: RM2,887, though its own course leads to a Yamaha grade, so ABRSM is hypothetical there
  • Music Bliss, RM199 start: RM3,016, or RM3,079 without the promo
  • Capen, paid quarterly: RM3,199
  • Music Bliss, senior instructor: RM4,279

That is RM2,160 between lowest and highest for the same weekly half-hour on paper. PPM is left out because it doesn't offer ABRSM; its online route is RM3,100 for a year with registration. These are best cases for a student who stays at Beginner pricing for a full year. Neo's fee rises to RM200 once a child reaches Grade 1.

You pay for grade and teacher, not minutes

The same 30 minutes costs more as the student advances. Neo's practical component goes from RM150 at Beginner to RM280 at Grade 5. Music Bliss's classical fee goes from RM220 to RM380 over the same range, yet its contemporary track goes from RM220 to only RM250.

Longer lessons don't earn a discount. At Music Bliss a certified instructor costs about RM1.83 a minute at both 30 and 45 minutes, assuming four lessons a month. Capen's 12-month Core plan is about RM1.67 a minute at both 30 and 60 minutes. Neo works out far cheaper per minute for a beginner, about RM0.92, because its RM165 includes 15 minutes of theory each week.

Yamaha shows the group trade-off. Only RM22 a month separates group from individual, but the group class is 60 minutes and the individual lesson 30.

Exam fees are a separate bill

ABRSM's published Malaysia fees, for sessions to December 2026, are RM396 for the Initial grade, RM439 for Grade 1, RM653 for Grade 5 and RM963 for Grade 8. Digital Performance Grades cost less: RM303 at Grade 1, RM460 at Grade 5 and RM669 at Grade 8. Online theory is RM215 at Grade 1 and RM300 at Grade 5. Practical sessions run in April-May, July-August and November-December, with KL and Petaling Jaya listed for all three. Schools may add their own charges, so ask. None here publishes one.

Before you pay

Ask these, because almost nobody publishes the answers:

  • What happens to a missed lesson? Only Capen and PPM publish anything, and PPM's rule forfeits the session without 24 hours' notice.
  • Is the advance fee or deposit a credit against fees, or refunded when you leave, and with how much notice?
  • How many lessons a month do you bill for? Months with five weeks and public holidays are where these differ.
  • What do books cost, and is there an exam administration fee on top of the board's fee?
  • Does the fee rise automatically at the next grade, and from when?

How to choose

For a young child starting out, a free or cheap trial matters more than RM20 a month. Book two trials, and watch whether the teacher gets them playing. Neo and Music Bliss both price in full by grade, so you can see what Grade 5 will cost you before you start. For exams on a budget, the digital ABRSM route saves RM136 at Grade 1. For a teenager or adult who wants to play songs, PPM's by-ear route or Music Bliss's contemporary track avoids the steep classical ladder.

Don't prepay a year until you've had a term. Capen's yearly discount is real, at RM360 on the 30-minute plan, but it only pays if the child keeps going.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much are piano lessons in KL?

For a beginner's weekly 30-minute one-on-one lesson, published fees run from RM140 with a promo code at Dream World to RM220 at Music Bliss with a certified instructor and RM320 with a senior one, as checked on 4 November 2026. Neo Dynasty charges RM165, including 15 minutes of theory.

How much is the ABRSM exam fee in Malaysia?

ABRSM's 2026 Malaysia page lists practical exams at RM439 for Grade 1, RM653 for Grade 5 and RM963 for Grade 8. Digital Performance Grades are cheaper, at RM303, RM460 and RM669. Ask your school whether it adds its own charge.

What age can a child start music lessons?

It depends on the school. Capen takes toddlers from 3 to 4, PPM from 3, and Music Bliss and Dream World from 4. Yamaha's Piano Course page starts at age 8. A trial lesson is the practical test of whether your child is ready.

Is it cheaper to pay for music lessons yearly?

At Capen, yes: the 30-minute Core plan costs RM2,400 prepaid for a year against RM2,760 paid quarterly, a RM360 difference. The catch is the commitment, so most parents are better off confirming their child will continue first. Check the refund terms before prepaying.
