8 Family-Friendly Things To Do in Melaka
Melaka's UNESCO-listed old town gets most of the attention, but the state has a whole separate lineup of attractions built for kids and families — zoos, water parks, a revolving tower, and a museum you can actually climb inside. Every price and opening time below was checked against the operator's own website or ticket portal on 6 September 2026, and the zoo, river cruise, tower, water parks and Encore Melaka were re-checked on 10 October 2026. Since our August check, Zoo Melaka's real Malaysian gate price has turned out to be RM39.10, not the RM33 repeated everywhere; Melaka Wonderland has put weekday adult entry up to RM43; A'Famosa has dropped its flat-price tickets and now charges RM49 adult / RM39 child for Water World; and Encore Melaka lets children in free by height (100cm) rather than by age.
How to choose between them. Split the list by what your kids can handle. Under 4s do best on the river cruise, at Zoo Melaka and in the Maritime Museum — all seated, shaded or air-conditioned, and none of them need a full day. Ages 4 to 10 get the most out of the two water parks, which are the single biggest cost item here (RM36–RM49 a head for one park) and need a full day plus a change of clothes. From about 6 upward, Encore Melaka and the Taming Sari Tower work as short, high-impact stops you can slot into an evening. Then group by geography, not by interest — Bandar Hilir and Ayer Keroh/Alor Gajah are 20–30 minutes apart, and crossing between them twice in a day is how families lose an afternoon.
1. Taming Sari Tower (Menara Taming Sari)
Malaysia's first revolving gyro tower lifts a capsule high above Bandar Hilir for a slow, smooth 360-degree spin over the city and the Straits of Melaka; the operator puts the viewing height at 80 metres. The ride lasts about 7 minutes — long enough to feel special, short enough that younger kids won't get restless. From the top you can pick out St Paul's Hill, the Independence Memorial building, Muzium Samudera and the Melaka River, which makes it a useful orientation stop on your first morning.
The tower is on Jalan Merdeka in Bandar Hilir and runs 9am to 10pm on weekdays and 9am to 11pm on weekends and public holidays. Its own site now prices tickets from RM20 for adults (13–54), RM15 for children under 12 and RM11 for seniors 55 and above — slightly up from the RM19.50 that older listings still quote.
2. Melaka River Cruise
For a slower-paced activity that doesn't involve much walking, the Melaka River Cruise is hard to beat. Boats run daily from 9am to 11pm from two jetties — Jeti Taman Rempah and Jeti Quayside — on a 45-minute to 1-hour ride past riverside murals, old godowns and heritage bridges. A Ferris wheel opened beside the river on 1 January 2026 and is now part of the view from the boat, ticketed separately.
Prices changed this year. Operator PPSPM (Perbadanan Sungai dan Pantai Melaka) ended its discounted rate on 1 January 2026 and went back to the original fare table, so the RM34/RM24 figures still circulating online are out of date. On a MyKad it is now RM35 for adults (13 and above) and RM25 for children aged 2–12, with RM30 for seniors 60+, RM20 for seniors 70+, RM30 for IPTA/IPTS students and RM25/RM20 for OKU adults/children. Foreign visitors pay RM50 adult and RM45 child. Children under 2 ride free.
The RM110 Family Package has expired — and what replaced it is cheaper. PPSPM's Melaka-residents-only Family Package (RM110 instead of RM120 for two adults plus two children, with a free pandan coconut drink) ran out on 31 August 2026, and its poster is still sitting on the operator's live promotions page. Ignore it. Checked on 6 September 2026, three other PPSPM offers are running in its place, and one of them is a better family deal than the one that died:
- Eco-Cruise Tasik Chin Chin family package — RM40 instead of RM50 for two adults plus two children, on until 31 December 2026. Unlike the package that expired, this one is open to every Malaysian citizen, not just Melaka residents. The catch is that it is a different boat, on a lake in Jasin rather than the town-centre river run — enquiries on 018-572 4807 or 019-658 4323.
- Eco-Cruise Sungai Linggi family package, also to 31 December 2026: RM210 instead of RM260 for the morning "Silver" trip and RM270 instead of RM340 for the midday "Golden" one, both for two adults plus two children. Individual Malaysian fares drop to RM65 adult / RM50 child on Silver and RM80 / RM70 on Golden. Two catches are printed on the poster and almost never repeated elsewhere: the trip depends on weather and tide, and the promo is only honoured at Jeti Eco-Tourism Paya Lebar, not at the Sungai Linggi jetty itself.
- Cabutan Bertuah, a lucky draw running 7 February to 25 December 2026, with around RM100,000 of prizes headed by a Perodua Bezza.

3. Zoo Melaka
Located in Ayer Keroh, Zoo Melaka is Malaysia's second-largest zoo — its own site counts 1,200-plus animals across 54 acres of secondary forest, tigers, elephants and giraffes among them. It opens Monday to Friday 10am to 5pm, with the ticket counter shutting at 4pm, and Saturday, Sunday and public holidays 9am to 6pm, counter shutting at 5pm.
The price almost every write-up quotes is wrong. Re-checked on the zoo's own rate card on 6 September 2026, Malaysian admission is RM39.10 for adults (13–59) and RM18.95 for children (4–12) and seniors (60+), tax included, with infants aged 0–3 free. The RM33/RM16 figures in older listings — this guide's own August version included — are out of date. So is the "RM35 adult / RM25 child" repeated for the Night Safari: that is the non-Malaysian reseller rate, not what a MyKad holder pays. Non-citizens are charged RM90.05 adult, RM64.00 child and RM64.00 senior. The zoo's rate card was unchanged on 10 October 2026.
Bila Larut Malam cuts night entry to RM10 on a MyKad or MyKid on the first Saturday of every month, 8pm to 11pm, capped at the first 1,200 visitors — so arrive before the 8pm opening rather than at 10pm, and note that the poster carries a line most coverage drops, that the session is subject to the weather. Visitors in full traditional Melaka attire get in free under the state's Melaka Sayang Rakyat scheme. The September edition ran on Saturday 5 September 2026. As of 10 October the zoo's own site still listed nothing newer, and we found no announcement of an October night. On the first-Saturday pattern the next would fall on Saturday 7 November 2026, but treat that as expected rather than confirmed until the zoo posts it.
The discount nobody claims. Photograph yourself with the zoo's Bot Harimau or Bot Zebra — two themed boats on the Melaka River — post it tagging @zoomelakaofficial, fill in the form behind the QR code and show the proof at the ticket counter, and you get 10% off one Zoo Melaka ticket. That is RM3.91 off an adult, bringing it to RM35.19. Far less than the RM10 night rate, but it works on any ordinary day, with no 8pm arrival and no 1,200-visitor queue.
4. A'Famosa Water Theme Park & Safari Wonderland
Don't mix this up with the historic A Famosa fort in Melaka's old town — this is a completely separate resort in Alor Gajah, about 30 minutes from the city centre, built around Malaysia's largest water theme park plus a drive-through-style Safari Wonderland.
The closure to plan around is a Tuesday, not a weekday. Both parks run 10am to 6pm, Wednesday through Monday, and are closed every Tuesday except on public and school holidays. Ticket redemption stops at 3.30pm, so a late-afternoon arrival is a wasted drive.
The flat-price tickets are gone. In September A'Famosa's portal charged a flat RM39, RM59 or RM89 a head. Checked again on 10 October 2026, it has gone back to adult and concession rates, all higher: Water World RM49 adult, RM39 child, senior or OKU, and Safari Wonderland RM65 adult, RM59 child, senior or OKU, for Malaysian ID holders only. The RM89 two-park ticket has disappeared, so a family doing both parks now buys two separate tickets each. That makes A'Famosa's Water World the dearest water park on this list for an adult (RM49 against Melaka Wonderland's RM43 weekday). For a child, the RM39 is close to Wonderland's RM36 weekday and RM41 weekend rates. Children under 90cm enter both parks free. Parking is RM3.50 per entry and the car park opens at 9.15am.
One inconsistency to know about: A'Famosa's own Water World page advertises a "2-Park Annual Pass RM69" for unlimited entry to both parks for 365 days, while the ticket portal now sells the two-park annual pass at RM319 per person (it was RM289 adult / RM239 child in September). The two figures do not agree and the RM69 banner carries no date, so confirm at the counter before planning around it.
The resort shuts for the whole fasting month every year — it closed 23 February to 17 March 2026, and the next Ramadan falls around February 2027.
5. Melaka Wonderland Theme Park
A lower-key alternative to A'Famosa, Melaka Wonderland in Ayer Keroh combines water slides, wave pools and a lake with its own separately-ticketed activities. It opens Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 6pm, closed on Mondays except during Malaysian school and public holidays.
Prices have gone up since our August check. On a MyKad — and Singaporeans get the same rate — weekday entry is now RM43 adult, RM36 child and RM27.50 senior or OKU; on weekends, public holidays and school holidays it is RM47.50 adult, RM41 child and RM27.50 senior or OKU. Non-MyKad holders pay RM54, RM47.50 and RM30. Children under 90cm are free, and the senior rate starts at 60.
Two things are worth doing before you drive out. Buying online takes up to 10% off park entry and up to 20% off the lake activities, but the park requires e-tickets to be bought at least two days before your visit — turning up and booking on your phone in the car park gets you nothing. And the lake side is charged separately: pedal boat RM25, tube ride RM20, fish feeding RM10, rabbit feeding RM10. Like A'Famosa, the park shut for the 2026 fasting month, from 23 February to 16 March.
6. Upside Down House Melaka
At Plaza Mahkota in Bandar Hilir, this fully-furnished house is built entirely upside down — kitchen, bedroom, living room, all flipped — making for one of the more novel photo stops in the city. It's a quick visit, usually 20 to 30 minutes, which makes it easy to slot in between bigger activities. It runs 10am to 7pm Monday to Thursday and 10am to 9pm Friday to Sunday and on public holidays, at RM18 for Malaysian adults and RM12 for children under 12 and seniors 60 and above (RM22/RM16 for non-Malaysians). Children under 90cm tall get in free, which makes it one of the cheapest stops on this list for families with a toddler in tow. It is at G12–G16, Jalan PM 7, Plaza Mahkota.
7. Encore Melaka
For an evening activity the whole family can enjoy, Encore Melaka stages a 70-minute live show in Southeast Asia's first 360-degree rotating theatre, using music, acrobatics and stagecraft to tell the story of Melaka's history. The spectacle carries the show even for kids who can't follow every plot point. There is one performance a day, at 5.30pm, and no show on Wednesdays.
The "from RM68" figure is a promotional price, not the rate card. Checked on Encore Melaka's own ticket portal on 6 September 2026, standard Malaysian tickets are RM78 for adults and RM48 for children aged 12 and under, seniors 60 and above, and OKU card holders. VIP seats are RM388, and non-Malaysians pay RM158 in every category. Bring your IC or OKU card — concession tickets are verified at the door.
The detail that matters most for families is a height rule, not an age one: children 100cm and under go free, but must sit on a parent's lap rather than take a seat of their own. That is a more generous cut-off than the "infants aged 0 to 3" older listings quote, since a typical four-year-old still clears 100cm — but it does mean no seat.
If you are staying the night, the portal also sells a package at RM228 for two Malaysian adult tickets plus RM120 of credit at The Pines Melaka — RM72 above the price of the two tickets alone, for RM120 of hotel and F&B spend, though the credit is only valid on bookings made direct with the hotel rather than through a booking site. Book at encore-melaka.com, and note the hyphen: the unhyphenated domain is now a parked page with nothing to do with the theatre.
8. Muzium Samudera (Maritime Museum)
Along Jalan Quayside sits a life-size, walk-through replica of the Flor de la Mar, the Portuguese galleon that sank off Melaka in the 16th century. Kids can climb aboard the air-conditioned "ship" and explore exhibits on Melaka's maritime trading history hands-on — genuinely more engaging for kids than a standard museum. Per operator PERZIM it opens Tuesday to Sunday, 9am to 5.30pm, with last entry at 4.30pm, and is closed on Mondays. Malaysian tickets are RM10 for adults and RM5 for children (RM20/RM10 for non-citizens), and the one ticket covers all three parts of the complex: Muzium Samudera Phase I inside the ship, Muzium Samudera Phase II next door, and the Royal Malaysian Navy Museum.
What a family of four actually pays
Two adults and two children — say ages six and nine — at the rates verified on 6 September 2026:
- Muzium Samudera — RM30. One ticket covers all three museums in the complex.
- Upside Down House — RM60. Free for any child under 90cm.
- Taming Sari Tower — RM70. Seven minutes at the top of the list for cost per minute.
- Melaka River Cruise — RM120. Forty-five minutes to an hour.
- Zoo Melaka, daytime — RM116.10. RM78.20 for the adults, RM37.90 for the children.
- Encore Melaka — RM252. RM156 adults, RM96 children.
- Melaka Wonderland, weekday — RM158. RM177 at weekends, on public holidays and in school holidays.
- A'Famosa Water World — RM176. RM98 for the adults, RM78 for the children.
- A'Famosa Safari Wonderland — RM248. RM130 for the adults, RM118 for the children. There is no two-park combo, so both parks cost RM424.
The whole Bandar Hilir day — museum, tower, upside-down house and river cruise — comes to RM280, not the RM160 an earlier version of this guide estimated on the old Zoo Melaka and river-cruise figures. Add either water park on a second day and a family of four is past RM430.
There are three honest ways to cut that. Go on a first Saturday and Zoo Melaka's night entry falls from RM116.10 to RM40 for all four of you. Photograph the zoo's Bot Harimau or Bot Zebra on the river for 10% off a zoo ticket on any other day. And if one child is under 90cm, the Upside Down House, both A'Famosa parks and Melaka Wonderland are all free for them — while Encore Melaka's free cut-off is a more generous 100cm, on a parent's lap.
A one-day family itinerary that actually works
If you only have a single day and a car, the version that wastes the least time looks like this. Morning: start at Muzium Samudera at 9am when it opens, while the ship is still cool and empty — budget an hour for all three museums on the one ticket. Late morning: walk five minutes to the Taming Sari Tower for the 7-minute ride and get your bearings over the city. Lunch and early afternoon: eat in Bandar Hilir, then do the Upside Down House at Plaza Mahkota — it is indoors, air-conditioned and only needs half an hour. Late afternoon: take the river cruise from Jeti Quayside; the 4pm to 6pm boats give you the light without the midday heat. Evening: Encore Melaka's show, or drive out to Zoo Melaka if it is the first Saturday of the month and you want the RM10 Night Safari.
That leaves the two water parks for a second day, which is the honest answer — A'Famosa and Melaka Wonderland each swallow a full day once you factor in the 30-minute drive, changing, and drying off.
Planning your visit
Most of these attractions cluster into two zones — Bandar Hilir (Taming Sari Tower, Upside Down House, Encore Melaka, Muzium Samudera) and Ayer Keroh / Alor Gajah a bit further out (Zoo Melaka, Melaka Wonderland, A'Famosa). Grouping your itinerary by area will save the most driving time. Two Mondays traps to avoid: Muzium Samudera is closed on Mondays and Melaka Wonderland is closed on Mondays outside school and public holidays, so a Monday day-trip loses two of the eight. A'Famosa closes on Tuesdays instead. Buy water-park tickets before you set off, too: A'Famosa's Malaysian rates are sold through its online portal, with the entrance date fixed at purchase, and Melaka Wonderland's online discount requires the e-ticket to be bought at least two days ahead, so a booking made in the car park saves nothing. And if you are travelling during a fasting month — the next one starts around February 2027 — check the two water parks first, since both shut for the whole period.
