8 Family-Friendly Things To Do in Melaka

Melaka's UNESCO-listed old town gets most of the attention, but the state has a whole separate lineup of attractions built for kids and families — zoos, water parks, a revolving tower, and a museum you can actually climb inside. We checked all 8 of these this week to make sure they're currently open and operating, so you can plan a stress-free family day (or weekend) without wasting time on a shuttered attraction.

1. Taming Sari Tower (Menara Taming Sari)

Malaysia's first revolving gyro tower lifts a capsule 110 metres above Bandar Hilir for a slow, smooth 360-degree spin over the city and the Straits of Melaka. The ride lasts about 7 minutes — long enough to feel special, short enough that younger kids won't get restless. It's open daily from 9am to 10pm on weekdays and till 11pm on weekends and public holidays, with tickets starting from around RM19.50 for Malaysians.

2. Melaka River Cruise

For a slower-paced activity that doesn't involve much walking, the Melaka River Cruise is hard to beat. Boats depart daily from around 9am and take passengers on a 45-minute to 1-hour ride past riverside murals, old godowns and heritage bridges. Malaysian pricing runs roughly RM24 for children and RM34 for adults, with infants under 2 riding free — a good option for families with toddlers who'd rather sit than walk the heritage trail on foot.

3. Zoo Melaka

Located in Ayer Keroh, Zoo Melaka is Malaysia's second-largest zoo and home to tigers, elephants, giraffes, and a wide range of other wildlife. On weekends it also runs a Night Safari for a different kind of after-dark visit. The zoo is open Monday to Friday from 10am to 5pm and Saturday to Sunday from 9am to 6pm, with Malaysian adult tickets around RM33 and child tickets around RM16.

4. A'Famosa Water Theme Park & Safari Wonderland

Don't mix this up with the historic A Famosa fort in Melaka's old town — this is a completely separate resort in Alor Gajah, about 30 minutes from the city centre, built around Malaysia's largest water theme park plus a Safari Wonderland where families can view animals. It's open daily from 10am to 6pm, closed on Tuesdays outside of holidays, with Water World walk-in tickets from around RM49 for adults and RM39 for children, and Safari Wonderland from RM65 adult / RM55 child. Note: it's closed during Ramadan, from 23 February to 17 March 2026.

5. Melaka Wonderland Theme Park

A lower-key alternative to A'Famosa, Melaka Wonderland in Ayer Keroh combines water slides, wave pools and lakeside recreation space. It's open Tuesday to Friday from 11am to 7pm plus weekends, closed on Mondays outside of holidays, with weekday tickets for Malaysians starting around RM36 for adults and RM29 for children. Like A'Famosa, it also closes during Ramadan (23 February to 17 March 2026).

6. Upside Down House Melaka

At Plaza Mahkota in Bandar Hilir, this fully-furnished house is built entirely upside down — kitchen, bedroom, living room, all flipped — making for one of the more novel photo stops in the city. It's a quick visit, usually 20 to 30 minutes, which makes it easy to slot in between bigger activities. It's open daily from 10am to 7pm (until 9pm Friday to Sunday), with tickets around RM18 for adults and RM12 for children aged 12 and below.

7. Encore Melaka

For an evening activity the whole family can enjoy, Encore Melaka stages a 70-minute live show in Southeast Asia's first 360-degree rotating theatre, using music, acrobatics and stagecraft to tell the story of Melaka's history. The spectacle carries the show even for kids who can't follow every plot point. Performances run most days of the week (check the current schedule, as the show is typically dark on Wednesdays), with tickets from around RM68 and infants aged 0 to 3 admitted free.

8. Muzium Samudera (Maritime Museum)

Along Jalan Quayside sits a life-size, walk-through replica of the Flor de la Mar, the Portuguese galleon that sank off Melaka in the 16th century. Kids can climb aboard the air-conditioned "ship" and explore exhibits on Melaka's maritime trading history hands-on — genuinely more engaging for kids than a standard museum. It's open daily from 9am to 5pm, closed on Mondays, with Malaysian tickets around RM10 for adults and RM5 for children; the same ticket also covers the adjacent Ocean Museum and Royal Malaysian Navy Museum.

Planning your visit

Most of these attractions cluster into two zones — Bandar Hilir (Taming Sari Tower, Upside Down House, Encore Melaka, Muzium Samudera) and Ayer Keroh / Alor Gajah a bit further out (Zoo Melaka, Melaka Wonderland, A'Famosa). Grouping your itinerary by area will save the most driving time. And if you're visiting during Ramadan 2026 (roughly 23 February to 17 March), double-check operating hours before setting off, since the two water theme parks close during that period.
