I took my two (then 4 and 7) up on a long weekend built around Langkawi and Perlis was meant to be a half-day filler on the way back to Kuala Perlis jetty. Snake and Reptile Farm — Sungai Batu Pahat, Kangar

Run by Malaysia's Institute for Medical Research as an anti-venom facility, this is the only farm of its kind in the country and it's been a Perlis fixture for over two decades. Kids get to see 200-plus snakes, crocodiles, monitor lizards and iguanas in open-air and enclosed pens, and handlers let visitors pose with tame snakes and pet smaller animals like rabbits and chickens — a genuine hands-on wow-factor most theme parks can't match. It's about 10km north of Kangar. Entrance is RM4 and it's open daily from 9am to 5pm.

Tasik Melati Recreational Park — Kangar

A calm lake dotted with roughly 150 small sandbar islands, connected by a Chinese-style bridge and floating walkways, with a proper playground, jogging track and picnic pavilions right by the water. Families can rent paddle boats or a sampan to explore the islands up close, which is the main draw for younger kids — it feels like an adventure without any real risk. Facilities include parking, food stalls and shaded seating, making it an easy half-day stop in Kangar without needing to book anything in advance.

Bukit Ayer Recreational Forest — Kangar

This eco-forest about 12km from Kangar has a dedicated shallow pool for younger children right next to a playground, separate from the deeper adult pool (up to about 2m), plus natural swimming holes fed by forest streams for older kids who want something less chlorinated.
