Malaysia's smallest state has a coffee scene — it's just compact
Perlis doesn't get talked about as a café destination, and it's not going to be confused with Petaling Jaya or George Town's specialty-coffee density any time soon. This is Malaysia's smallest state, and Kangar, its capital, is a small, low-rise town — so the café scene here is exactly what you'd expect: a handful of independent spots rather than a strip of them, spread across the town centre, its outskirts, and the road toward Kuala Perlis.
That said, the spots that do exist are genuinely worth knowing about, and a few of them have been getting real attention lately. Peram Cafe, which converted an old hardware shop into a rustic industrial space, was covered by Free Malaysia Today and Bernama in late 2025 for exactly that transformation. Ahli Kopi bills itself as Perlis's first coffee boutique, selling beans and brewing gear alongside pour-over drinks. And a cluster of newer, aesthetic-driven cafés — think string lights, exposed brick, alfresco seating — has sprung up around Kangar's town centre and bus station over the past couple of years, following the same "kedai kopi meets Instagram" wave that's hit smaller Malaysian towns elsewhere.

Every place below was cross-checked against its own social media presence, Google/Tripadvisor listings, and recent local coverage where available, and everything listed was still showing signs of active operation (recent posts, current reviews, listed hours) at the time of this search.
What to expect
Don't expect elaborate latte art menus or a dozen single-origin pour-over options at every stop — some of these are closer to a cozy neighbourhood kopitiam with better coffee and a nicer chair than a full third-wave café. A few, like Ahli Kopi, do lean into specialty coffee with manual brewing and bean selection. Most are small, independently run, and rely heavily on Instagram and Facebook rather than a website, so that's where you'll find current hours, photos, and any promotions.
Because Perlis is so compact, none of these are far from each other or from Kangar town centre — a short drive links most of them, making a café-hopping half-day a realistic plan if you're passing through on a Langkawi or Kedah road trip, or making a border run to Padang Besar or the Kuala Perlis jetty.
