Ipoh Old Town didn't become a coffee pilgrimage site by accident. This is where kopi putih — Ipoh white coffee, made by roasting beans with margarine instead of caramelised sugar — was born in the early 20th century, and the original kopitiams around Jalan Bandar Timah still draw queues every morning. But that heritage trail is well documented; this list goes a layer deeper.
In the last decade, the same shophouses and back lanes that housed tin-mining-era coffee stalls have filled up with a second wave: specialty roasteries pulling single-origin pour-overs, French-trained patisseries, and theatrically themed cafés built for a photo and a slow afternoon. Some sit two minutes from Concubine Lane (二奶巷); others are a short walk or Grab ride past Padang Ipoh. All are currently open and independently run.
