Ipoh Old Town didn't become a coffee pilgrimage site by accident. This is where kopi putih — Ipoh white coffee, made by roasting beans with margarine instead of caramelised sugar — was born in the early 20th century, and the original kopitiams around Jalan Bandar Timah still draw queues every morning. But that heritage trail is well documented; this list goes a layer deeper.

In the last decade, the same shophouses and back lanes that housed tin-mining-era coffee stalls have filled up with a second wave: specialty roasteries pulling single-origin pour-overs, French-trained patisseries, and theatrically themed cafés built for a photo and a slow afternoon. Some sit two minutes from Concubine Lane (二奶巷); others are a short walk or Grab ride past Padang Ipoh. All seven were open and trading when we re-checked every listing on 16 September 2026.

Whether you're chasing a proper flat white, a Basque burnt cheesecake, or just an air-conditioned corner to wait out the afternoon heat, these seven spots cover Old Town's café scene without repeating the classic kopitiam names you've probably already read about elsewhere.

How to choose between them

Start with what you actually want. If it's the coffee itself, Cold Blue Specialty Coffee is the only spot here roasting its own beans in-house, with single origins from Colombia, Nicaragua and Ethiopia — and on weekdays it opens at 8am, which makes it the natural first stop. If it's cake, Jalan Market does the heavy lifting: Girlie's Cafe and Chloe.co sit a few doors apart, one built on Basque burnt cheesecake, the other on croissants and cromboloni. If you want the coffee to come with context, Earthcare Café is the only one attached to a free heritage gallery about white coffee itself — and it is the one that opens at 8am seven days a week, where Cold Blue doesn't start until 10am at weekends.

Timing matters more than most guides admit, and two things about it are commonly reported wrong. Plan B is not the only late option: Chloe.co on Jalan Market also runs to 10pm every day, and the Experience Centre runs to 9pm. At the other end, Platform Coffee on Concubine Lane shuts at 6.30pm, Girlie's at 5pm or 6pm depending on the day, and Aud's at 5pm — so an afternoon that starts after 4pm will find most of Old Town closing around you. Two cafés close a full day, both on Mondays: Girlie's Cafe and Aud's Cafe.

Two practical notes worth checking before you go. Dietary requirements vary genuinely here: Chloe.co states in its own Instagram and Facebook bios that it uses halal-certified ingredients only, Girlie's and Platform Coffee are pork-free, and Aud's Cafe runs a pork-heavy menu with no halal claim anywhere on its site. And parking in the Old Town grid is tight — the lanes around Jalan Market and Lorong Panglima are narrow and often pedestrianised, so park once on the fringe and treat the whole thing as a walk. Nothing on this list is more than about a 10-minute stroll from Concubine Lane except Cold Blue, which is a slightly longer walk out towards Padang Ipoh.

One caveat on Platform Coffee. The café's own Instagram bio still carries an older note reading "Open daily 11.30am to 6.30pm", which does not match the Google hours above. The 6.30pm close is consistent across both sources, so treat the morning end as the uncertain one and don't plan to arrive before 11.30am.

What a café crawl actually costs

Google publishes a crowd-reported spend band for each of these listings, drawn from 154 to 653 respondents per café. Two sit at RM1–20 a head — Cold Blue and Platform Coffee — and the other five at RM20–40.

A three-stop crawl for two people, priced off those bands: an 8am pour-over each at Cold Blue (RM2–40 for two), pastries at Chloe.co on Jalan Market (RM40–80), then a late plate at Plan B (RM40–80). That's roughly RM82 to RM200 for two across three stops. The low end is realistic if you stop at one drink each; the high end is what you'll pay if everyone orders food.

For a single set of verifiable reference prices, Chloe.co's foodpanda menu lists an AOP butter croissant at RM9.90, a classic macaron at RM7.10, a dark chocolate canele at RM9.90, a signature almond croissant at RM17, cromboloni from RM19.50 (RM22 for the kunafa pistachio), shortcakes from RM16 to RM27.70, and a classic original tiramisu at RM21.70. Delivery prices usually run above the counter price, so read those as a ceiling rather than a quote. Girlie's burnt cheesecake has been widely reported at around RM21 a slice, but the café itself does not publish a price list.
