Kota Bharu is a city you will want to drive. The airport sits at Pengkalan Chepa on the edge of town, the beaches at Pantai Cahaya Bulan and Pantai Irama Bachok are spread along the coast, and Tumpat, Pasir Mas and the Rantau Panjang border town are all easy drives. Taxis and e-hailing exist, but a week of short rides adds up quickly, and a day trip to Jeli or Kuala Krai is far easier with your own wheels.
The market is split in two. The Avis counter inside Sultan Ismail Petra Airport charges international-brand prices with an airport surcharge built in. Everyone else is a local operator that delivers the car to you, at the arrival kerb, the Lembah Sireh bus terminal, KTM Wakaf Bharu or your hotel. Many of these run on WhatsApp alone. We dropped several during research because their domains now redirect to unrelated sites, or they post "RMXX" instead of a price. Two platforms, WAHDAH and MT Car Rentals, sit in the middle and resell local fleets through a proper booking engine.
All prices below were read on the operators' own pages, rate tables or booking engines on 23 October 2026.
How to choose a rental in Kota Bharu
- Compare the daily rate, then the extras. A local firm's RM100 Axia and Avis's RM209.88 Saga are not the same product: the Avis figure already includes the airport surcharge, a registration fee, tax and unlimited mileage. Local rates usually exclude delivery to town (KBrental charges RM30) and insurance add-ons.
- Ask about the deposit before you book. It ranges from none (Klezcar, and 28 of the 36 cars on MT) to RM100 (ksewa; RM50 on its student rate). KBrental keeps half the deposit if you cancel 48 hours or more ahead, and all of it inside 24 hours or on a no-show.
- Tell them where you are going. KBrental says its cars may only be used inside Kelantan unless you get permission first. ksewa prices trips to Jeli, Kuala Krai, Besut and Kuala Terengganu RM10 to RM20 higher.
- Mind the weekend. Kelantan's weekend is Friday and Saturday, and the Avis counter closes at 5pm on those days instead of 6pm. If you land late on a Friday, arrange delivery with a local firm.
- Check the driver age rule. Most cars on MT accept drivers from 19, with each car showing its own limit. Avis's search assumes a driver over 25.
Which one fits
For the lowest posted price with delivery, KBrental's table is the cheapest of the six we checked, but its own pages disagree on a few cars, so confirm the quote on WhatsApp. For a clear, all-in written table, ksewa is the easiest to budget, including weekly rates. If you would rather pay online and not chat, Klezcar, WAHDAH and MT all show live prices for your dates. Avis is for travellers who want a company counter at arrivals and are happy to pay about twice the local rate for it.
