Beyond the beach clubs

Langkawi's everyday eating outside the resorts comes in three forms: open-air seafood halls where you choose your catch from the tanks, beachfront ikan bakar warungs, and night-time satay grills. There is also one dish, laksa ikan sekoq, that belongs to the Kedah coast rather than to KL. Every spot below was re-checked on Google Maps on 16 September 2026 for its status and opening hours. Most have no website, so the Maps listing and a phone call are the most reliable way to confirm on the day.

Two older picks that have closed

If you are working from an older Langkawi food list, strike two names. Tomato Nasi Kandar, the 24-hour mamak on Jalan Pantai Cenang, and Restoran Haji Ramli, the cash-only ikan bakar spot on the same road, are both marked permanently closed on Google Maps. Waze and HappyCow also list Tomato as closed. This guide carried both until September 2026. For a late meal now, the latest-opening spot on the island is Sham Satay Kelibang in Kuah, which Maps lists until 3am.

Where each spot sits on the island

Kuah town in the east holds two of the six, both in the Kelana Mas commercial area: Wonderland Food Store at 179-181 Persiaran Mutiara 2 and Sham Satay Kelibang at No. 161, Bangunan Trimula. That makes Kuah the easiest place to eat seafood for dinner and satay afterwards without moving the car.

Jalan Pantai Tengah, just south of the Pantai Cenang strip, holds the other two seafood picks. Orkid Ria is at Lot 418, where it moved after leaving its old site on Pantai Cenang Road. Warung Upih is on the sand next to Charlie Motel.

Laksa Power Airport is on Jalan Kuala Muda, facing the beach beside Langkawi International Airport. The sixth pick, Nasi Kandar Yasmeen, is on the mainland in Alor Setar, for anyone travelling in on the Kuala Kedah ferry.

Opening hours at a glance

None of these take bookings in the usual way, so the clock does the planning. Hours below are from Google Maps, checked 16 September 2026:

  • Laksa Power Airport: 9am-8pm daily, the only one here that opens in the morning
  • Orkid Ria: 1pm-11pm daily, so it also works for a late seafood lunch
  • Warung Upih: 3pm-11pm, closed Wednesdays
  • Sham Satay Kelibang: 4.30pm-3am daily
  • Wonderland Food Store: 5.30pm-10.30pm daily, dinner only
  • Nasi Kandar Yasmeen (Alor Setar): 12pm-2.05am daily

Wednesday is the day to watch. Warung Upih is shut, so move a Pantai Tengah sunset dinner to Orkid Ria up the same road, or to another night.

What a meal actually costs

Google Maps' crowd-reported spend per person is a usable guide. It is RM1-20 at Laksa Power Airport, Sham Satay Kelibang and Nasi Kandar Yasmeen, and RM20-40 at Wonderland Food Store (712 reports). At Warung Upih it is RM20-100 (542 reports), and the spread depends entirely on what you put on the scale.

Two real bills for scale:

  • Laksa Power Airport: one reviewer paid RM30 for two bowls of laksa, drinks and a plate of cucur udang.
  • Orkid Ria: a food blogger's April 2025 dinner for two came to RM150, including two fresh coconuts, rice and iced lemon tea. The Chiefeater review site puts it at RM50-100 a head.

Live seafood is the variable. Crab, prawns and lobster are sold by weight, so ask the rate per 100g before you point at a tank. A day built only from the three RM1-20 spots stays around RM60 a head at most.

The must-try local specialty

Laksa ikan sekoq ("one fish") is a tamarind-sour, sweet-spicy laksa whose gravy is cooked with a whole fish. Laksa Power Airport serves it facing the beach, with planes coming in behind the tables. Older write-ups describe it as a late-afternoon food truck that shut when the fish ran out. The current Maps listing is a sit-down cafe open 9am-8pm, with cucur udang and coconut shakes as the other popular orders.

Reviews are split. The view gets near-universal praise, while some reviewers call the laksa decent but pricey for what it is. Go for the setting and the local dish rather than for the cheapest bowl on the island.

How to pick

  • One seafood dinner only: Wonderland in Kuah for value at about RM20-40 a head. Orkid Ria suits a bigger group, since it has a banquet hall that seats about 200.
  • A sunset table: Warung Upih, any day except Wednesday.
  • Near the airport before or after a flight: Laksa Power Airport, open from 9am.
  • Late at night: Sham Satay Kelibang in Kuah until 3am, with set meals for 2 to 12 people if you are a group.
  • Arriving by ferry through Kuala Kedah: Nasi Kandar Yasmeen in Alor Setar, open until just after 2am.

On halal: Wonderland Food Store describes itself as a Chinese-Muslim, pork-free restaurant, and Orkid Ria is pork-free. Neither advertises halal certification. Laksa Power Airport, Sham Satay Kelibang and Nasi Kandar Yasmeen serve Malay, Arab-style and nasi kandar food with no pork on the menu. If certification matters to you, ask at the counter.
