> Quick view: Burger King Imago on the Kota Kinabalu waterfront reopens on Friday 28 August 2026 at 11am. Burger King Malaysia's own campaign artwork promises a free burger to the first 100 customers at 11am, a Lion Dance and Magunatip performance at 12.30pm, prizes on the day, and a Buy 1 Free 1 Whopper that runs from 28 August to 11 September. Separately, Burger King's own Merdeka poster cuts the Signature WHOPPER a la carte from RM16.20 to RM6.90 on 31 August, one day only, nationwide, with Imago not on the excluded list. That single day sits inside the Imago window, so the last weekend of August is where the value stacks.

What Burger King has actually published

Burger King Malaysia posted the campaign on its own Facebook page, and the artwork is headed ARAMAITI BK IMAGO, with the line *Bah, jom lepak di Burger King Imago vibe baru*. Aramaiti is the Kadazandusun toast you hear at any Sabahan gathering, and the poster leans into it hard. The photograph on the artwork is the outlet itself: a refitted counter, new kiosks, booth seating in Burger King's current interior scheme, balloons still tied to the entrance.

The poster carries five things and nothing else:

  • 28 Aug 2026, printed across the storefront photograph
  • 100 Burger Percuma Bah! at 11am, so a free burger for the first hundred people at one specific hour
  • Tarian Singa dan Magunatip at 12.30pm
  • B1F1 Whopper, dated 28 Aug to 11 Sep
  • Pelbagai hadiah menanti anda, various prizes waiting for you, and a line reading Promo Pembukaan BK Imago

The artwork also carries the JAKIM halal mark, which is the usual position for Burger King Malaysia.

The Magunatip line is worth a beat. Magunatip is the Murut bamboo dance, the one where two pairs of poles are clapped together at ankle height while dancers step between them. Pairing it with a lion dance at a burger reopening is a very Kota Kinabalu piece of programming, and it is scheduled for 12.30pm, ninety minutes after the doors open.

The Whopper deal, and the number that is not on the poster

The offer with the longest legs is the Buy 1 Free 1 Whopper. Burger King's own artwork dates it 28 August to 11 September 2026, which is a full fortnight, and both of those are Fridays. That matters because the freebies on opening day are capped and the Whopper deal is not date-limited to that morning.

What the artwork does not carry is a price. Not one ringgit figure appears on it.

Listing sites covering the reopening put the pair at RM18.90, against a stated usual price of RM37.50 for two, which would work out to RM9.45 a burger. We could not find that figure on anything Burger King published, and there is a reason to be careful with it. Burger King's own Merdeka artwork, which we did read this week, prices the Signature WHOPPER a la carte at RM16.20 as its normal price. A stated RM37.50 for two standard Whoppers implies RM18.75 each, which sits above the Signature. Those are different burgers on a different price line, so the two figures are not strictly comparable, but it is enough reason not to repeat RM18.90 as if Burger King had said it.

Practical version: go in expecting a genuine one-for-one on the Whopper, and let the counter tell you the price. If the number matters to your decision, ask before you order.

31 August lands inside the window

Here is the part worth planning around, and it is fully confirmed on Burger King Malaysia's own poster.

On 31 August 2026, Merdeka Day and a Monday, Burger King is selling the Signature WHOPPER a la carte at RM6.90, down from RM16.20. The poster says 1 DAY ONLY, and Burger King's own release lists the channels as dine-in, kiosk, takeaway and drive-thru. Delivery is not among them, so this one is a walk-in deal.

There is also a Kaya Pandan Pie plus one soft drink for RM6.90, which the artwork illustrates with a Coca-Cola Zero Sugar — and its wording is the part almost every write-up is skating over. Burger King's own Malay-language release puts it as *Pelanggan yang membeli mana-mana set hidangan, tidak termasuk item promosi*: customers who buy any meal set, excluding promotional items. The RM6.90 Signature WHOPPER is itself a promotional item, and it is sold a la carte rather than as a set. On the plain reading, buying the RM6.90 Whopper does not unlock the RM6.90 pie and drink — someone at the table has to order a normal meal set for that.

The exclusions are printed in the poster's fine print and they are specific. The deal is valid at all Burger King outlets in Malaysia except airport outlets, Medini Mall, Sunway Lagoon, Mitsui Premium Outlets, Genting Premium Outlets and Johor Premium Outlets. Burger King Imago is none of those, so it qualifies.

So the Imago window and Merdeka Day overlap. On 31 August you can order a RM6.90 Signature WHOPPER, and the Buy 1 Free 1 on the standard Whopper is also live that day. They are two different burgers, which means a table of two can reasonably run both in one visit rather than choosing between them.

The coupon book Sabah cannot use

This is the part that changes the arithmetic for anyone reading from Kota Kinabalu, and it is settled on a document Burger King serves from its own website.

Burger King Malaysia runs a digital coupon book, and it is the single biggest standing source of discount the chain has. The current edition carries codes YD38 through YD74, runs 15 August to 15 October 2026, and the deepest coupon on it, YD60, takes RM32.57 off a four-person order. You show the coupon or key the code in at the counter. No app, no membership.

It does not work in Sabah. The fine print printed across the top of Burger King's own coupon PDF says it in four words: "Only valid in West Malaysia." The file Burger King serves it from is even named BK_DIGITAL COUPON_AUG'26_WM_YD.pdf — WM for West Malaysia. Beyond that it also excludes Sunway Lagoon, Medini Mall, Johor Premium Outlets, Genting Highlands Premium Outlets, Mitsui Outlet Park, Langkawi and airport branches.

So this fortnight a reader in Kuala Lumpur has two ways to get a cheaper Whopper and a reader in Kota Kinabalu has one. That is the real reason the Imago Buy 1 Free 1 is worth more in Sabah than the identical offer would be worth in the Klang Valley: it is not competing with a coupon book, because in Sabah there is no coupon book to compete with.

The same PDF hands us the only two-Whopper benchmark Burger King has actually published. Coupon YD54 sells two Real Whoppers for RM32.40 and prints the saving as RM13.50, which puts Burger King's own normal price for two Real Whoppers at RM45.90, or RM22.95 each. That sits well above the RM37.50-for-two the listing sites quote as the "usual price" behind their RM18.90 figure. It does not prove RM18.90 wrong — the Real Whopper, the Signature WHOPPER and the standard Whopper are three different burgers on three different price lines — but it does mean the normal price being used to dress the Imago deal up as a fifty-percent saving is not a number Burger King publishes anywhere we can find.

What only the listing sites carry

Three further mechanics appear in coverage of the reopening but not on the artwork we were able to read. Treat them as likely but unconfirmed, and check at the counter:

  • A Burger King goodie bag with a RM30 spend, said to be limited to the first 200 customers on reopening day
  • Free Small Onion Rings with a minimum RM10 spend, said to run to 13 September 2026, one redemption per customer
  • Free four-piece Nuggets with the purchase of a Signature Whopper or Spicy Tendercrisp set, also said to run to 13 September 2026

If those hold, the campaign's real tail is 13 September rather than 11 September. We have dated this article to the 11th because that is the date Burger King itself printed.

The outlet, and the one down the road

Burger King's own restaurant locator gives the address as Lot No. B-04 and B-05, Basement Floor, Imago Shopping Mall, KK Times Square Phase 2, Off Coastal Highway, 88100 Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, and lists the hours as 8am to 10pm. Some third-party listings say 10am to 10pm. Burger King's own page says 8am, which suggests breakfast service, so if you are planning an early visit take the locator over the aggregators.

Two useful facts from the same locator. Burger King Malaysia lists 188 restaurants nationwide, of which fifteen are in Sabah and eleven of those are in Kota Kinabalu, including Damai, Inanam, One Borneo, Pavilion Bundusan, Plaza Tanjung Aru, Putatan, Sierra Sabah, The Shore and UUS. Sarawak, by contrast, has a handful.

The one that matters on 28 August is BK Suria Sabah Shopping Mall, roughly a kilometre up the same waterfront strip. If the queue at Imago at 11am looks like a hundred people who all read the same poster, the Merdeka RM6.90 deal on the 31st works there too, and so does an ordinary lunch.

Who this is for, and who should skip it

Worth the trip: anyone in Kota Kinabalu who eats at Burger King anyway. A fortnight-long one-for-one on the chain's flagship burger is the single best standing reason to pick Burger King over the alternatives in the same mall, and it needs no app, no code and no membership as far as anything published says.

Worth timing: families and groups. The free burger is capped at 100 people at 11am on the 28th, so that one rewards arriving early or not bothering. The 12.30pm lion dance and Magunatip is the better reason to bring children, and it costs nothing to watch.

Skip it if: you were planning to drive across town on the strength of the RM18.90 figure. That number is not Burger King's, and the deal you can bank on is the one-for-one itself. Skip the 31 August RM6.90 run too if you cannot stand a Merdeka Day queue at a mall food outlet, because that offer is nationwide and every Burger King in the country will feel it.

Two worked examples

Two people, Saturday 29 August. One Buy 1 Free 1 Whopper covers both of you, plus drinks ordered separately. Whatever the pair price turns out to be, you are paying for one burger and eating two, and the offer has thirteen more days to run if the weekend is busy.

Four people, Monday 31 August. Two Signature WHOPPERs at RM6.90 each is RM13.80 against a normal RM32.40, a saving of RM18.60 on those two alone. Add one Buy 1 Free 1 Whopper for the other two people. That is the only day in the whole campaign where both mechanics are live at once. If you also want the RM6.90 Kaya Pandan Pie and drink, one person has to order an ordinary meal set to qualify — the promotional Whoppers do not unlock it. And none of the four of you can reach for the digital coupon book to top this up, because it stops at the South China Sea.

Before you go

The reopening is Friday 28 August 2026 from 11am at Imago Shopping Mall's basement level. The Buy 1 Free 1 Whopper runs to Friday 11 September 2026. Merdeka Day, Monday 31 August, is the one day the nationwide RM6.90 Signature WHOPPER stacks into the same window.

One last thing worth knowing before you plan around any other Burger King offer you have seen this month: the chain's digital coupon book is West Malaysia only, on Burger King's own fine print, so in Sabah the one-for-one is the offer. Burger King's Drive-Thru VIP freebie is also no help at this particular outlet — Imago is a basement unit inside a shopping mall, so you would need one of Kota Kinabalu's standalone drive-thru branches for that.

Everything dated above comes from Burger King Malaysia's own campaign artwork, its own Merdeka release, its own coupon PDF and its own restaurant locator. The RM18.90 pairing price, the goodie bag, the onion rings and the nuggets come from elsewhere, and we have marked them as such rather than passing them off as confirmed. Ask at the counter, and order the one-for-one on its own merits.
