7 Interior Design and Renovation Firms in Kuching 2026: What the CIDB Register Says, and the Portfolio That Is AI Art

The only firm on this list registered at the top of both Malaysian and Sarawak ladders: CIDB Grade G7, which carries no contract-value ceiling, and UPKJ Class A with the Sarawak State Financial Secretary's office. Its own site describes a practice covering interior design, renovation, and civil and building construction, and names its clients rather than hinting at them: Sarawak Energy Berhad, Jabatan Kerja Raya, Dewan Bandaraya Kuching Utara, Perbadanan Perumahan Negeri Sarawak, St Teresa's School Board of Management, Ibraco Construction, Hiap Ghee Seng, OBYU Realty, Kementerian Pembangunan Luar Bandar and Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus. Its published project list is Sarawak-wide rather than Kuching-only: Anjung Usahawan Sematan, a land and road-reserve project at Pasir Panjang in Santubong, the Julau water supply upgrade, SK Sg Sebatu in Subis near Miri, Gustina Residence in Kota Samarahan, and double-storey terraces at Taman Highfield on Jalan Batu Kawah in Kuching. Read the fit honestly: this is a general contractor that also does ID work, so it is the right call for a structural rebuild, an extension or a commercial fit-out, and probably heavier machinery than a two-bedroom condo needs. The only Kuching firm we found whose CIDB record actually carries the interior codes. Its MyDigital Kontraktor profile shows Grade G5 (contracts up to RM5 million), registered since 12 July 2017, registration number 0120170712-SR190310, valid to 8 July 2027, holding both PPK and SPKK certificates, and specialisations B07 hiasan dalaman, B28 kerja-kerja ubahsuai, B04 building construction, B03 restoration and conservation, plus CE21 and M15. What it is best known for is a step sideways from home renovation: Impact Design is an exhibition design and build company for museums, galleries and visitor centres, with more than 20 years covering interpretive planning, display design, content production, custom fit-out and digital media. Its own Our Creations menu lists Interior Design & Renovation alongside Museums, Corporate Galleries and Visitor Centres. Founded and led by Ho Min Yung with co-founder Kueh Keng Seng. If your project is a showroom, a corporate gallery, a heritage space or a shop with a story to tell, this is the most specialised firm in Kuching for it. The most straightforward operator in this list, and the only entry in the top-ranking Kuching renovation directory whose website both loads and matches its description. Trading since 2013, it runs three connected lines: interior design, contracting for renovation and construction, and in-house carpentry for kitchen cabinets, wardrobes and custom furniture, which it brands Borneo Carpentry. Its published portfolio is the useful part, because every project is a named Kuching business you can walk into: Nando's at Vivacity (timber fittings), a Grab office renovation, the Ta Kiong supermarket makeover, a Ginza renovation, a Creative Hamper retail fit-out, a Japanese restaurant, plus modern house construction and bungalow furniture. Its contractor page covers demolition, re-roofing, plumbing and electrical rewiring, house extensions with piling, and bungalow construction to architects' specifications. One gap worth noting: Alto does not publish a CIDB grade or registration number on its own site, so ask for both at the first meeting, especially if your budget is over RM200,000. A design-led studio in Galacity that describes itself as a premier interior design firm and a CIDB registered G2 contractor, which on CIDB's own table caps it at contracts not exceeding RM500,000. Its offer is 3D-heavy: layout plans, mood boards, renderings, walkthroughs and VR previews, for homes, offices and retail. Two things to settle before signing. First, its own About page contradicts itself: one paragraph promises end-to-end delivery "to structural works, finishing, and scheduled maintenance", while two paragraphs below it says the firm specialises "solely in interior concept development... without involvement in the construction phase" and that "our role ends at the design phase", recommending trusted contractors instead. Ask which applies to your job. Second, two of the showcase interiors on its homepage are AI generated: both are 1792 by 1024 pixels, both carry prompt-style filenames, and the café image has garbled pseudo-text on the back wall. Its studio photograph, a 1600 by 1067 shot of a timber-batten fit-out, does look like a genuine record of completed work, and is the cover image of this article. Contact +6010 8888028.

A newer Kuching contractor and the clearest example of why the register is worth reading. Its CIDB MyDigital Kontraktor profile shows Grade G3, so contracts up to RM1 million, registered on 30 July 2025, registration number 0120250728-SR158619, valid to 29 July 2027, holding a PPK certificate. Its declared specialisations are B04, building construction, and CE21, civil engineering construction. Despite the name, the profile shows no B07 interior decoration code and no B28 renovation code, and no mechanical or electrical registration. The profile describes end-to-end construction from site preparation and structural works to finishing and scheduled maintenance, for residential, commercial and light civil projects in Sarawak, and it lists zero declared past projects and zero products, which is normal for a firm registered in 2025. The honest read: a legitimate, current G3 registration and a headroom of RM1 million, with no public track record yet and no interior specialisation on the register. Ask for completed work and a current certificate. One practical limit: the register verifies the credential but not the contact. The profile’s telephone field shows a placeholder, 03-12345678, and both the registered and correspondence addresses are masked, so you will need another channel to actually reach the firm.

The smallest registration in this list, and a useful reference point for what a G1 can and cannot sign. Its CIDB MyDigital Kontraktor profile shows Grade G1, capping contracts at RM200,000, registered on 8 January 2025, registration number 0120250107-SR148868, valid to 7 January 2027, with a PPK certificate. Declared specialisations are B04 building construction and CE21 civil engineering, with no B07 interior decoration code despite "Interior Decor" in the registered name. Declared past projects and products are both zero. For a single-room refresh, a kitchen, or a small shop fit-out under RM200,000, a G1 is the right size of firm and the paperwork is current. For a whole-house renovation in Kuching, where a 2,000 square foot landed job can pass RM200,000 quickly, this grade is a real constraint rather than a formality, so get the quotation in writing before the scope grows. Its own Facebook page is the live channel and is far more specific than the register: it advertises curtains, zebra and roller blinds, wall fluted panels, wallpaper, wainscoting and wall mouldings, wall decor panels, carpet and laminate flooring, and window tinting. That matters because its register entry, like PLUS’s, carries a placeholder telephone and masked addresses, so Facebook is the practical way to reach it.

The one entry here that is not a Sarawak firm. Move Over is a Malaysian interior design platform with offices in Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh and Kuching, and it is included because plenty of Kuching homeowners will meet it first through search. Its Kuching office is at E292-B, 1st Floor, Icom Square, Block C, Jalan Pending, 93450 Kuching, and enquiries run through WhatsApp on 011-1607 9696. The published offer is a one-stop service: design consultation, 3D renderings and mood boards, home remodelling and repair, tailored cabinetry and wardrobes, lighting, curtains and blinds, and a colour and material guide, room by room from living and dining to kitchen, study, bedrooms, bathroom and home office. It also advertises 0 per cent interest instalments up to four months when paying with Grab, which none of the local firms here offer. What it does not publish is a CIDB grade, so the practical question is the same one as with any platform: which registered contractor actually signs your contract and carries the work, and at what grade. Ask that before the first deposit.
